Do you believe people can just "choose" to be happy

No. No no no no no.

If people can choose to be happy, then I wouldn't be depressed all the time and having ultra-negative thoughts.

Of course, it's up to you to react positively to the environment around you, but everyone has different personalities to begin with. It's hard for someone who's more sensitive to backlash, and who has received nothing but backlash their whole lives, whether it be from family, school, or whatever, to suddenly "choose" to be happy when all they've known is pain. Someone else who's more hardened and confident might exit that same situation with a different resolve. It's down to personality, I think.

I hope that all made sense.

I would like to choose to be happy but I have to deal with so many sh***y things that there is no room for it.

I agree with it.

Yes.

I agree with Mikey that it's partially personality, and it's also partially environment whether you keep your state of mind happy or not.

It's all about thought process. If you choose to be happy, you will be happy. If you choose to be sad, you will be sad. Though I do think some sadness cases could be caused by chemical imbalance.

I've noticed when I'm a crying mess that I wanted to feel sorry for myself. I wanted to be crying. I wanted somebody to notice me. To notice the pain I never show to others. I wanted somebody to see it without me showing them.

Choosing to be happy is hard if you hate the situation you're in now. That's why depression digs its own hole; you get into a state of mind that doesn't allow you to be happy, and happiness is a very strong motivator for pushing forward and being happy.

Where there is a will, there is a way. Carpe Diem(Seize the day).

No, you've got to work hard for it.

You choose to try and be happy, and not wallow in pointless worrying thoughts.

Totally agree with this. You can't choose to be happy, but only you can work towards your own happiness. If you sit around and wallow in self pity you are 'choosing' to be unhappy. And people who sit around and constantly pity themselves generally aren't fun people to be around, I used to do it a lot and I don't blame people drifting away.

You cannot choose if you're happy, but you can choose how` it is going to control your life.

Yup, I believe in this.

People CAN choose to be happy if they are ready.

The choice can only be made if you know how to do it.

And that you have a reason to be happy or know how to gain the feeling.

A choice is always there to make, but of course it's not a choice to be sad.

Since hurt is there, but I do believe there is a choice in hapiness,

Because the choice is already been making, everyone wants to be happy

So the choice is always made, but now it's the time to act on the choices you have deep inside.

and this:

Yes, you can choose to be happy, but it means practicing changing how you think.

What a Desolate Tibetan Buddhist Monastery Taught Me About Happiness | The Daily Mind – Making the Daily Grind Meaningful

"But the monks don’t buy this. They don’t agree that you should depend on others for your own happiness. They believe that happiness comes from within, not without. It comes from working with you own mind and knowing that you have a choice as to whether you live and angry or a happy life. And the choice is yours to make. Not someone elses."

you can choose how you think and how you react to the world around you

those thoughts then lead to happiness - or they can lead to sorrow

i think you can choose to be more positive and look at things differently. you cant be like "im gonna be happy now *poof* Yay im happy!! =D". if you did, you'd just be pretending. but you can alter your thought process a bit and work toward being happy instead of being all negative about everything

I think it's a mood you fall in and out of..and if you try to grasp onto to it to hard..it actually makes things worse. Moods come and go and thats the way it should be.

to paraphrase something I read somewhere

Happiness is accidental.

But we can learn to be accident prone.
