What did SA folks do before the internet?

As an SA, nearly all my time is spent on the internet. I don't know what I'd do without it. I don't like TV, I don't like reading mainly because it can't interact back with me.

Read, write, study, paint/draw, think deeply, get drunk, cry, masturbate... there are probably heaps of other solitary activities that I can't think of right now. I'm sure someone who grew up without the internet would know how to keep themselves occupied as they wouldn't know any different.

You actually managed to put a smile on my face :) Thank you !
And yeah, people who didn't know the internet were probably alot to themselves maybe considered "outcasts". I'm glad I have this to talk to people and/or vent.

I played video games and listened to music on a CD player.

Crash bandicoot, Tomb raider, WWE and mortal combat.

I am not a big fan of TV either although once upon of time the TV had quality music, music videos and more watchable shows. I used to imitate the dance videos because their used to be alot of them in the 90's and early 2000's.

Yeah you have books also. I read some books. I was so tired from school anyways so I slept most of the time.

perhaps some of them were forced to interact with other people more regularly and improved their social problems

interesting that you all think this technology helps you when all it does is insulate you from social contact with actual human beings

I spent a lot of time roaming around in the woods and just being outside in general. Maybe I should sell my computer...

same as beleza except I was watching tv too and go outside. My addiction to internet got bad when I discover msn chat ( for those we remember that). And hit the all time high when I discovered porn on it. I didn't have to hope to find it on tv it was always there

Yeah, I always LOVED reading, watched a lot of TV when I was younger... I like hiking or going off with a bike too... :)

write, study, paint/draw, think deeply... yup :)

Computers can be good for connecting with interesting people worldwide, sometimes it's better to 'unplug' and live in RL a little too... :)

You can interact with paper or neighbors' kiddies or other people in RL too... :)

There were also many activities around the house, gardening etc. People worked together & were much more sociable in the older times!!

There is certainly some truth to this. Before the internet, people found a way to get by out in the real world. These days, so many ridiculous lifestyles are possible as a result of the net. People cling to it like a lifeline, not realizing that without it, they would more than likely have more real-world contact with others. Don't get me wrong, I love it too, but fully acknowledge the damage it's done.

i didn't have the internet until i was in my 30's

i spent a lot of time by myself reading, watching TV, pursuing various hobbies, or hanging out with a few friends or later my wife

letter-writing was something i tended to avoid as fraught with too many possibilities for error

the internet has actually increased my contact with the world in some ways - i have many more (online) friendships, and i keep much better contact with people through e-mail and now social networking - so even if i'm sitting home alone, at least now i'm interacting with people

oh and before, you had to be really brave and go buy a magazine or rent a video in public if you wanted to look at porn - it's much more discrete now

I think I probably would have offed myself by now if I had no way to connect with other people, or understand what is going on with me.

Isolation, lack of support and thinking you are alone when you are have these kinds of problems is probably the one thing that would completely break me.

They were the piano players in those old westerns who don't talk-- just play ragtime tunes and hide behind their piano when someone started to shoot the place up.

I just remember watching a lot of tv. When I discovered the internet, I got suckered into it real fast and had always spent tons of time on it from the get-go. Sometimes, I wished my parents didn't give in to my pleas of getting internet access. maybe, it would of pushed me to get out in the real world. who knows?

Before wireless came along and before we owned cellphones, I remember them getting mad at me all the time for tying up the phone line lol
