Monday 18th July

Type: Outdoor Run - 12 km Easy Pace (Evening)
Distance: 12.02 km (7.51 mi)
Time: 01:09:34
Pace: 5:47 min/km (9:15 min/mi)

I've missed a couple of runs from the program, feel bad about that. I thought I'd do Sundays long run today at easy pace. Turned the light off my Garmin so I couldn't see what pace I was going and just went by perceived effort.

Tuesday 19th July

Type: Outdoor Run - Hills Training x 5 (Evening)
Distance: 7.86 km (4.91 mi)
Time: 01:01:24
Pace: 7:48 min/km (12:28 min/mi)

Hills training with Anwyn L. :) 1.5 km warmup, did alternating Mount Street/Bellevue Terrace (3 times) and Mount Street/Jacobs Ladder (2 times) then 1.5 km cool down. Was hard work but felt it was a little easier then previous attempts :)

Wednesday 20th July

Type: Outdoor Run - 6 km Easy Pace (Morning)
Distance: 6.01 km (3.76 mi)
Time: 00:33:21
Pace: 5:32 min/km (8:51 min/mi)

Recovery run, tried to run without looking at the Garmin, concentrated on easy breathing but I lapsed a tiny bit. Splits: 5:22, 5:50, 5:44, 5:37, 5:22, 5:20. Hopefully the calves don't tightened up as bad as the previous time I did Jacobs Ladder :)

Type: Indoor Swim (Evening)
Distance: 1800 m
Time: 01:00:00

Why do I suck so much at swimming? It's so frustrating.

Alright I'll stop updating this thread from now on ...

Hm, when I'm at home I cycle most days 8-10 km one way and the same back. It takes me about 1 hour altogether. Yeah I cycled once also 100 km (in Mexico) it took me whole afternoon about.. I think it's manageable but cycling like this routinely to work I find a bit stretch :D. Unless I got paid for it too :). But yeah there are also cycle couriers who cycle 9-6 in the city. I considered it too but the hours are really offputting...

Hi Lea, cycling 20 km every day is already a great effort, and will probably greatly improve your well-being compared to if you didn't have any movement at all. In my previous job as a teacher I worked closer to home, and I used to cycle that kind of distance every day. Then I got this new job (strictly office and computer work, so sitting all day) further away, and I took public transport for 3 and a half years. At a certain moment I had gained more than 10 kg. I started running again, but since taking the trains took more than 3 hours a day, I didn't have much time left for that. So by cycling all the way I'm now taking about an hour longer (a little over 4 hours a day), but at the same time I'm getting a great dose of exercise. There are a few other reasons why I took that decision:
When I got my current job four years ago, one of the things that I thought made it attractive is that, even though it's in the capital, it's near one of the biggest forests of the country, and we don't have that many for the rest. I had always wanted to visit that forest, and I thought now I would get the chance to go over there for a walk once in a while. Three and a half years later I never even had taken the time to go over there once. But since I started cycling, my route passes through that forest, and I cycle through it for 15 km. It's better than sitting in run-down, over-crowded trains for hours. The second reason is that when I was a bit younger, I sometimes went for quite long bike rides, and but I never trained frequently. Still I was always planning to get a bit more serious and see what kind of speeds I could achieve on a bicycle. But unfortunately I was, until November last year, still riding the bicycle I got when I was twelve! Admittedly it was quite a decent bicycle at the time, and a bit faster than most ordinary bicycles, with seven gears and quite thin tires, but of course now it was getting older, it weighed about 16 kg. Still I had always postponed getting a decent bicycle, because I guess I was too frugal, or somehow I subconsciously thought I wasn't worth getting a really good bicycle. So last year, after I took up cycling to work, I bought a quite good racing bicycle, maybe a bit too good for what I could do with it, but then at least I would be motivated to ride it a lot. Then another reason is that they pay me a compensation per km (20 eurocent), so I even get paid for what most hobby cyclists do for free. Then finally, since I don't have a driver's licence or a car, being able to cycle a decent distance at least gives me a bit of the same independence that I would have if I were able to drive around in a car. All this doesn't mean that on some days, when it's raining or freezing and dark, or when my bike breaks in the middle of nowhere I don't curse the moment when I considered this whole cycling idea.

About an 11 kilometre run. My first run for 5 days, I've been feeling very sick. No splits, No Garmin.

Saturday: About 10km, was mobbed by a plover. Feeling better at least.

Sunday 20km. Tough

Tuesday: 10km at lunch time

Wednesday 10km at lunch time, too cold to get up.

Good with your training. Replica. Let me know who you go with your races?

Sorry Kiwong, I was hoping to inspire other people to post there workouts here too but it doesn't seem to be working. I'm still happily training for my races and you'll see it all blogged on my dailymile account (see signature). I still come to this website occasionally so feel free to message me when you're heading to Perth for a race or training run :)

Will do Replica, glad to see your getting out there training and getting you running times lower. I'll keep an eye out on your dailymile. I'll get over to Perth sometime, and I'll keep in touch for a run or race.

Last week: cycled 105 km each day from Monday to Friday, although my averages were not so great (sometimes below 25km/h). Played soccer for about an hour on Tuesday and Thursday, one win and one loss, although technically, I'm still one of the worst players. I hope to find the time in the coming weeks to maybe also do some running or swimming again, although I won't manage any real triathlon training I'm afraid.

went at the punching bag for an hour. Then spent another hour doing pullups, then switching to crunches. And then a headstand (idk why i did that lol)

I really believe that exercise is the key to ridding yourself of anxiety. I did a mile swim this morning and it was just wonderful. It makes me feel cheerful/powerful/humorous....

Lately, when I exercise I practise positive thinking - I list all the things I'm grateful for in my head, and I visualise positive experiences that have happened, and some that haven't. Doing this has been an amazing change in my life in itself. I feel so much more alive. It wakes me up out of that state where you're so distant from yourself, like you're floating above yourself. As silly as it sounds, when I'm running, especially if it's really hard - you're forced to be 'in' yourself.

I wish I'd know this secret sooner! I spent so many years only exercising when I needed to drop a few pounds and had to force myself to endure it. Stopping and starting. I wish someone had told me that actually exercise is the key to feeling happy, it's essential for good mental health!

Happy exercising folks! xxx

Hey Replica,

Just read that you ran Jacobs (20th July)
Is this a regular thing?

How long did you stay there for and how many?

Darryl:)
