Yes, I am definitely influenced by the look of the book. But unlike you, I am really attracted to old books! A book I read last summer had a hole chewed into it by an actual bookworm. That was awesome! I just love feeling that a book I am reading has history in and of itself, as an object. The saddest thing to me is when I buy a used book in perfectly good condition, because it obviously never was read.
I think old paperbacks are my favorite. I have some on my shelves that are falling to pieces. They just have so much to say.

I don't like old books that look old because I feel like they'll fall apart if I try to read them.

I know what you mean. It seems to me that I should feel the same way. I guess I see newer-looking books as untouched and waiting to be discovered. Which doesn't make much sense because any book, old or new, is "waiting" to be discovered if you've never read it before. I don't know why I feel that way :idontknow:

I'm going for my MRI research sessions tomorrow evening and the following evening. A little nervous but not much.

More than the MRIs themselves I'm nervous about meeting the doctor in charge of the study because I feel like I look too young to be doing it. I feel like I have to apologize on behalf of how young I look to everyone I meet, which is just ridiculous. I don't really go anywhere important without feeling like people in authority are looking at me like I have two heads. And when I seem to notice that they are, I can't tell if they actually are or it's just my own paranoia. My mother thinks most of the time it's in my head, but how does she know?

I wish I could just relax and feel like a normal human being my age.

The comments on this article help somewhat, haha: http://jezebel.com/5916691/how-to-look-and-act-your-real-age

I've been avoiding doing a surgery that should improve my comfort because I thought we were bad financially. My mum bought a car a couple of years ago and paid everything in one go (the car was 3 years old though, so it wasn't brand new), then my sister went to live in the Netherlands (she only has one room and it's very expensive, even though she's already sharing said room with her boyfriend) and is doing a masters there, so I thought that paying for that surgery would be an unnecessary weight right now.

My mum was talking about doing eye surgery today and she mentioned that the insurance covers 80% of the cost. I wish she had told me this a while ago, I could've already gotten the surgery done while I was at home doing nothing all day.

And after writing this post I did some research on the surgery and apparently doing it doesn't mean the problem goes away. It basically cuts off one vein because it's too large or something, but doing so will mean that some other vein will have that extra blood, making it large and thus causing the problem again.
Seems like a change of diet can help a lot with this, so I'll try that instead.

Has anyone read any books by Richard Matheson? I just recently discovered him as an author, and I'm interested to hear any thoughts on his works. I haven't read anything of his yet, but I'm always interested in discovering well-written sci-fi/horror type literature, because there is so much of it out there that is total crap. Thanks in advance for any input!

My favourite Matheson story is his novella "I am Legend." The movie version with Will Smith was really disappointing. Many of the most interesting ideas in the book were removed from the film.

There is also the short story Duel that was made into a film starring Dennis Weaver.

Another of Matheson's novellas is the Incredible Shrinking man, which I really couldn't get into.

Woo! The tax return finally came through! A full two months after I was expecting. Waiting for it was driving me nuts.

I'm glad that's over.

I've also decided to replace all my regular light bulbs with LED light bulbs.

I went from having seven light bulbs of 25watts each, to seven LED bulbs of 3Watts each. Which means that all LED bulbs together consume less power than one single regular bulb did.

And supposedly, they last about two years or so, so they're super durable too.

Ah, thank you! I almost picked up I Am Legend at the bookstore the other day, but it had one of those covers with a scene from the movie, and I'm always totally turned off from a book when they do that. I'm glad to hear that the book has more substance; I will definitely pick it up next time I see it.

I love the LED bulbs! They're kind of expensive, but definitely worth it. The quality of light is so much better than the tungsten bulbs, and I can't stand those CFLs, ugh. Fortunately, you don't have to use as many to light a space, since they are so bright. I've had the same bulb in my reading lamp for years now, and it's still going strong. I also like that it never gets hot, so I don't have to worry about the house burning down if I forget to turn off the lamp when I leave. My city has also started using LEDs in street lamps, which cuts way down on light pollution and directs a brighter light toward the street. Hooray for technology.
