my 6th grade teacher used to give students books at the end of the school year. He gave me LOTR trilogy, one year. I never read them and just recently threw them out lol. I did read the Hobbit though. It was okay, but I don't really remember much.

Has anyone read The Silmarillion? Apparently that's the prequel to The Hobbit.

i tried, but my ADD kept me from finishing it

actually, i never finished more than the first few pages

i skimmed through it a few times, though

it looked fascinating

honestly, Tolkien's world is amazingly well crafted, but i found his writing extremely dull, especially as a teenager - one of these days, i'll have to watch the films

for a good read, try The Chronicles of Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander - someone should make a live-action version of those sometime

Finally got to watch Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy when it came on HBO. I had been meaning to see it. I almost quit watching it partway through because it was so slow in picking up. But once it got going I had to see the rest. I'm still confused as to what exactly happened though, haha.

^ It is? I've heard of it, but I never actually knew what connection it had.

^ I'm still going to give The Fellowship Of The Ring a chance. But if it turns out to be as painful as reading the Hobbit, then I won't even continue with the rest of his works. I do love the movies though. I mean, I've only seen The Fellowship Of The Ring, but I loved it. Haven't watched the others yet though and I really need to.

Definitely making a note of that other series you mention too.

Today I spoke w/ someone on the phone, for almost 2 hours. I wanted to volunteer for his organization so he called me and we spoke. The conversation dragged on and on and I got kind of bored and tired. But I was afraid of ending the conversation prematurely because it would be impolite? I'm really bad at saying no to people. I can say yes so many times but I suck at rejecting people. Anyways, to make matters worse, I needed to go to the bathroom, but the guy kept on talking on and on. Finally, when the phone call was over, I was so relieved.

I want to know, how do people say no to their bosses and superiors, especially when they yak for like 2 hours? Do you have to come up with excuses just to sound polite? Or do you come out and tell the other person "Hey, this conversation is going on for too long, I need a break."

I'm trying to think of a good excuse to end a long conversation, but nothing too far-fetched or sounding like a lie.

just be honest. say you need to hit the bathroom. or say, "hey i'd like to chat more but i need to make an important call." not a big deal.

Feeling a bit numb. Depressed. the usual. Angry that I seem to losing budding friendships. It hurts like Hell, because I become attached to people easily...

not actually Fiona Apple
At work the other day, "I'm so sexy" started playing, and one of the cooks said "hah, omg this song is so GAY!" He went on for a little while, moving onto the music video, and commented on the fact that it was "even gayer."

I have a strong suspicion he has no clue that the members of Right Said Fred are extremely gay (literally), and could hardly help myself from giggling.

edit: one member is gay rather, but still ::p:
