Being gay was something to cower and reside in shame for at some point in time. I'm not saying it's the same in any way, I'm just saying people have a tendency to ask people to hide things that they themselves are uncomfortable with in others.
It's not about liking or not liking the show, it's not for everyone. It's about allowing people to express their appreciation without the heavy handed prosecution/judgement that without intent dubs it as some sort of sickness or extreme abnormality. Which hasn't been said in this thread, but has been elsewhere plenty times over.
As more and more people, not even associated with the fan community in any way shape or form, belittle and compromise that what they don't understand, people that are part of the community are slowly but surely pushed into a tiny little corner where they're allowed to express themselves.
And sure, there's more to a person then just that one fandom/interest. I for one am fanatic about everything I like; Portal, The Legend of Zelda, Legend of Korra, Game of Thrones, to name a few. But nobody gives me fuzz about that because it's socially accepted.
And that really irks me when it happens. There's big accepted communities that revolve around virtual people shooting/murdering other virtual people cold dead. Some more gruesome than others. This is socially accepted. I don't see why something harmless in nature (harmless in subject matter as well as behaviour that spawns from it) shouldn't be. It's absolutely ridicules. It's prejudges to claim that one piece of fiction is somehow weirder to like then another.
Perhaps the reason people are uncomfortable with it is because they themselves aren't developed enough (no offence, it's not meant to be a shot of any sort) to live and let live.
