Does anyone else find this whole "brony" (my little pony) thing, weird?

Um... why is it creepy to you? I didn't know there was a particular age and gender to be able to enjoy a cartoon

Note: I'm 27 and I enjoy it.

I just think it's weird that grown men watch it and call themselves "bronies". I don't mean to offend anyone.

It's not weird. Anyone has the right to be a fan of anything they like. There's also fans of Star Trek who call themselves "trekkies", do you think that is weird too?

Just because the cartoon might seem girly, it doesn't mean a man can't enjoy it. That is usually the problem with people thinking it's creepy. If you think logically, you will find out that it all comes from gender roles. Age kind of affects it too because an adult, according to society, is not supposed to watch cartoons.

It's all a load of bologna. People should be able to like whatever they want.

It's not the fact it's a cartoon it's the fact that it's a cartoon about pink ponies and it's aimed at children. If people want to watch it that's up to them but i personally find it very odd. What next, Barbie? I've seen grown men who collect My Little Pony things. Why would a grown man be interested in My Little Pony? Why would it appeal to them? Star Trek and My Little Pony are completely different.

I don't really have a positive image of bronies myself (maybe because I never really watched MLP), but they don't seem very different from the adults who watch other cartoons such as pokemon, naruto, and disney movies. In fact, I know people that seem to behave towards disney movies (like Lion King) the same way bronies behave towards MLP. But to society, the first group is ok because society in general likes those movies and evaluates the scene with their nostalgia goggles on (as in, they also watched those movies when they were kids so they're perfectly fine with an adult watching it now).

I think it's even more acceptable by society if it's a girl watching those disney movies, or a guy in a relationship; if it's a single guy society will probably see it as a bit creepy.

So... you're saying that men should only watch spaceships, cars, sports and porn? That's an ignorant statement :1

The target audience is children, just as a lot of other cartoons nobody has a problem with. It seems to be the fact that it's called "my little pony" what weirds you out. So what if it's called that? Have you ever taken the time to watch some episodes? Have you ever spotted the funeral in the Valentine's episode? Seen the mental breakdowns the characters have? The lessons the show teaches?

I understand if it's not appealing to you, but why labeling some dude as weird because he likes collecting merchandise of a show he likes? I have a load of merchandise in my room, am I a weirdo for that? No wait... I'm a woman, me liking ponies is more logical, amirite?

To be honest i find an adult, whether male or female, liking MLP, strange but that's just my personal opinion. If i was dating a guy and found out he had MLP things in his house i wouldn't continue the relationship. I'm not really sure how an adult would get into watching it in the first place. I really don't want to offend at all but grown men watching it and collecting my MLP dolls makes me feel really uncomfortable. Would yo be ok with your Dad watching it and playing with MLP dolls? I sure wouldn't.

My mom is 63 and bought herself a pony set because she loved it, she sometimes watches episodes with me. I would love it if my dad was a good person and did the same.

Your main problem here is MEN liking it. You're really stereotyped. Ending a relationship over your guy liking something you don't consider manly enough is a really jerkish thing to do. But hey, do what you wish, it's your life and your choices.

Oh, and another thing. Buying merchandise doesn't mean you have to play with it. Just sayin'

I'm a Brony actually (and not offended by this thread, so don't worry. ;3 ). It's seems odd to outside spectators I imagine, but in essence really no different to any other fandom surrounding a show, game or story.

I think the problem is that when people hear ''My Little Pony'' they imagine the cutsey and overbearingly-obnoxiously cheerful shows from the 80's and 90's. Which I agree is unwatchable (for me, at least). Bronies, most of them anyway, only have an affinity towards the newest instalment.

Which is a proper cartoon for one (proper humour, interesting character development and is actually story driven), and has a lot of subtle qualities and arts to admire that kids would simply not notice.

It's not just adult men either, there's quite a few adult women that watch it on a regular bases. It was specifically designed to be enjoyed by kids as well as their parents. Which explains its universal appeal.

I went on a date with a "brony" once (although I don't think he referred to himself as one, and whether he collected My Little Pony merchandise is unknown to me). He said I reminded him of a character on the show named "Twilight Sparkle." (To be fair, I did look the character up, and I can see where he got that idea, haha)

But I don't really think it's weird, in all honesty. I mean, unless you're modeling every aspect of your life based on a show, person, band, etc., then I see nothing wrong with liking something not necessarily targeted toward your age group and/or gender.

I must also clarify, I'm not offended either. I just enjoy a good debate and I'm highly against gender roles.

I respect yoir opinion, but you need to accept the fact that people have preferences. If you truly like a person, why won't you accept their likes? Same goes for parents. Is my mother not worthy of being my mother because she likes it?

You're thinking a bit stereotypically. This isn't manual labor that only men can accomplish. The show is meant for everyone, kids mostly, but everyone. Meaning women and MEN of all ages. And come on...it's just a cartoon. Is it worth all the fuss about who should and shouldn't watch it?

My current mate doesn't like ponies, but agrees to watch them if asked to, he doesn't really mind them. Respecting preferences is important in a relationship.

i knew someone who was into the "dark" side of that fandom and it kind of ruined my image of "bronies" XD...freaky stuff.

A few of my friends are into MLP though so it's whatever, i don't mind.

I don't think men should only do "manly" things like play football or whatever, but, MLP? Come on. I respect the fact that you like to watch it or whatever but i personally will always think it's weird for an adult to do that. Especially a man.

That's just...odd.

@Hellhound. What i'm saying is, i don't think men need to be macho or anything but MLP is just very disturbing to me. You can defend it, that's your prerogative, but an adult male watching MLP and collecting them is just very weird.

Gunners. That is the rotten apple of the fandom. Bronies dislike them because they give us a bad name. I can assure you that most fans don't act like that.

There are loonies in every single fandom. You can't judge the whole bunch based on some crazies.

I'm not really defending the show right now. I'm more against gender stereotypes. I respect people's likes, gender aside, as long as they don't shove them down my throat.

If I happened to come across some person like those that Gunners showed above, I would probably be weirded out too, because that's just exaggerated. It has nothing to do with them being guys, it has to do with them being weird as a person. I've seen some rabid fans before, but someone like that isn't a real fan, imo. A real fan of something doesn't go insane over it or force it on others. Bronies themselves don't approve of this obnoxious behavior either. Like I said before, it makes us look bad.

Also, you haven't really answered what the logic behind your argument is. Why do you think it's weird? What's the reasoning behind it?
