Does anyone else find this whole "brony" (my little pony) thing, weird?

I have nothing to add, I agree with everything Hellhound said, really. It's 'creepy' because it's guys. Obviously men should only watch movies with Dolph Lundgren while they grunt and smash beer cans into their faces.

No one is forcing you to watch anything, you're allowed to do whatever you want to do. But, we're allowed to have our opinions as well, and if you dislike my opinion, well not my problem.

I'm not one to judge how people enjoy content, or how they express themselves, but if it's in a unconventional way I rather people do it in private, and not like the above displayed example on a public site such as Deviant Art. The unconventional/crazy are always louder then the normal ones (the media doesn't find the normal Bronies interesting enough, thus they are ignored.)

Like I said before; The new show was designed and created by legitimate cartoon creators, including competent people in animation, voice acting and writing. It was as much designed for the parents (adults) as it was for children.

No. Just because i think it's weird that grown men like My Little Pony it doesn't mean i think men should be watching action movies. I just can't believe that people seriously think it's not weird but whatever. :idontknow:

I'm not really defending the show right now. I'm more against gender stereotypes. I respect people's likes, gender aside, as long as they don't shove them down my throat.

If I happened to come across some person like those that Gunners showed above, I would probably be weirded out too, because that's just exaggerated. It has nothing to do with them being guys, it has to do with them being weird as a person. I've seen some rabid fans before, but someone like that isn't a real fan, imo. A real fan of something doesn't go insane over it or force it on others. Bronies themselves don't approve of this obnoxious behaviour either. Like I said before, it makes us look bad.

Also, you haven't really answered what the logic behind your argument is. Why do you think it's weird? What's the reasoning behind it?

It's not even the fact that i think it's "girly". I just can't understand why a grown adult would even think about watching My Little Pony unless they have children and watch it with them.

Ok, here's a question. If people watch it because it's well written or whatever, why not just watch it? Why collect all these MLP dolls? What would an adult get out of that? Why would an adult have MLP dolls in their room and think that's normal? I'm sorry but i just can't get my head around it at all.

I'm 22 and if I saw these somewhere I would be tempted to buy them:

Not the man, the dolls he's holding ;) Although he isn't bad either, but I don't think I can buy a human male. Not in this country anyway...

I think there's a bit of thrill in liking something "childish" as an adult, maybe it keeps you feeling young. Haha. I don't know. I just really like Adventure Time and wouldn't mind having the plush toys to show it ;) But Adventure Time isn't quite the same as My Little Pony.

As far as men liking it... I do find it odd, but hey, free country and all. I don't really care. I would have a problem if the guy I was dating liked it. Sorry. Can't overlook that even if I don't have a really good reason. It would just turn me off.

Did you notice that when something is considered as weird, most of the time it's just because it is unusual. As soon as more people start doing it then all of a sudden you're not a freak anymore, maybe just a bit special, then what was once special becomes mainstream, and before you even noticed that something happened, what was once weird becomes the norm. Not saying that being a fan of ponies will become the norm, but you see what I mean.

I'm not calling anyone a freak. I see what you're saying but there seem to be a lot of these "bronies" around yet most people still don't see it as normal.

Yes, exactly.

Liking ponies within a Brony community is already 'normal'. There's nothing special about it. Much like people don't feel weird, or as weird at least, coming out with their anxieties on this very forum.

I feel it's mostly people that have alternate reasons to be sceptical have most difficulty coming to terms with people liking it. Others might consider this forum- and its members, to be extremely odd and creepy. Which when you understand the ins and outs, is no longer the case.

Well I've never heard about bronies before reading this thread so it's not as common as you may think. It's clearly not mainstream.

Bronies, trekkies, hunters, bikers, sci-fi nuts, Americans, Canadians, Britains, Scottish, Irish, IRA, NRA.....

People like what the they like. People want to belong. People will always be a part of some sort of group. Whether national pride, connecting with other fans of a particular fancied show or a group of like-minded individuals to certain issues.

Our wants to belittle other groups are there as well. It is human nature. It is nature. It's too bad we all can't be a part of what we find we belong to and not be discriminated against.

How is it bad to be a collector?

I'm a collector of numerous things myself, including MLP toys. Just asking why you think it's a bad thing.

My brother, who is 22 years old, is actually a brony; he loves "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic." As for myself, I've only actually watched one episode, and I quite liked it. In fact, I would like to watch the whole series someday. I don't see anything wrong with adults and males liking the show. I mean, it's not like the show is harming anyone. Sure, there are some weirdos involved in the fandom, but that can be said of any fandom. It's perfectly fine if someone doesn't care for the show, but doesn't mean that person should criticize other people for liking the show. Different strokes for different folks.

And as far as merchandise goes, I'm pretty sure most bronies don't even buy any merchandise. Even for the ones that do, there's nothing wrong with buying merchandise for something you like. My grandmother has little angel figurines and decorations sprinkled around her house; she has them because she likes them. I wear an "Invader Zim" shirt every once in a while; I wear it because I like "Invader Zim." A brony buying a plushie or a poster or a t-shirt isn't really any different. It's just a way of expressing yourself.

And if anyone is confused over why an adult male would enjoy MLP:FiM, you could just ask a brony WHY he likes the show.

Eh, My Little Pony is actually really fun to watch. It's well written and funny. Now, in no way would I actually describe myself as a ''brony'' (come on, it's just a show, not a major aspect of your life worth identifying to), but I agree that it's superficial and stereotypical to paint men who watch the show in a bad light just because it doesn't fit with your personal interpretation of our cultural norms. Yes, boys can like barbies and pink and ponies, yes girls can like trucks and join the army. Would we really rather go back in the early 1900s?

I don't want to devalue the rest of your post by just using this small part (it was all good), but I just want to emphasize how important the part you mention above actually is. And also thank you for saying it.

Whether it's brony, a trekkie, a homeless person, a porn star, or anyone else that you don't understand or find creepy; TALK TO THEM. While I sympathize with people talking to each other and having an opinion as such, inside perspective is vitally important if you truly wish to understand something- or someone, better.

Misinterpretation, shallow judgement (judgement without actual knowledge) and lack of inside perspective usually amounts to really bad results. The 'common' man and women holds great power over how these 'odd' fandoms are perceived, and how the people in them are treated. These groups (not just bronies, also others like it) already have tabloid media to give them a bad rep, don't be someone that piles on and contributes to the negative.

Understand, don't judge.

Yes, this is what I was thinking. Who ever said there was something wrong with being weird, or weird things in general? As long as it's not hurting anyone, I don't mind weirdness in the slightest. I can't exactly say what normal is exactly supposed to be, but it doesn't seem as interesting.
