This has been building for a few months now. My brother has been buying a LOT of survival items. He has bought a huge surplus of bullets for his guns (he's a cop so...) bought several knives such as the K-9 bar and other Russian knives; he made a trip to the local Mormon 'shop' to get dried goods (flour, sugar, noodles, powdered soups, dried fruits, beans, etc); purchased emergency blankets, MRE's, flashlights, various tools, first aid kits <--yes, plural, and the list goes on and on. You get the point!

He is convinced that something is going to happen on December 21st. My sister-in-law goes along with it as well. So that leaves me, the panic-stricken SA ridden girl cowering in the corner fearing the worst. Zombie Apocalypse? my brother is ready. Famine? yup, he's got it covered. Floods, snow storm, riots, blackouts, check, check, check and check.

Now don't get me wrong, being prepared, or over prepared is kinda my specialty... however, his constant talk of that *something* to happen is kinda making my senses go into over-drive. I've always been one to, for lack of better term, hoard food, supplies, etc., due to lack there-of when I as a kid, I get that. But it seems he is almost on brink of paranoia.

Question....does anyone feel that something may happen, and if so, any guesses as to what? City-wide blackouts would be my best guess if anything were to come of this magical day in history. I am trying to psyche myself up with the mantra of *this is just like 1999/midnight/last day of the year* kind of scenario. Only thing happened in 1999-2000 was.....Nothing.

meh, I over-think and over-analyze everything....wish my brain would shut the hell up already!

Alot of this 2012 talk is used for marketing purposes, bizarrely. Even the videos on the tube are mostly about building a following based on nothing.

It's all fine. Nothing happened on y2k, 06/06/06 and other dates. Its fine.

There would have been other dates from previous centuries that had similar concerns.

Nothing is going to happen on 21.12.2012.Preparing for some imaginary apocalypse is ridiculous,I mean is more probably that I will die in an car accident or by a disease or by choking with food yet I don't prepare or even worry about it because it's simple too ridiculous to worry about those things.

u know I dont know whats going to happen. I mean the Solar flares are one thing i think may be real or possible. Watching the docu's a couple of years ago, I remember them making sense from a scientific POV and stuff. But they said the consequences of this are nothing really 'catastrophic' as in end of the world or apocalyptic as far as i remember,

So im not expecting anything super crazy, but i wouldn't say 100% that absolutely Nothing will happen. Actually, i think nothing will happen on the said date. But possibly if things do happen, perhaps they'll happen around December.

Just all the earthquakes this year and last year is already 'something' in my book. So more earthquakes in december, possibly.. stuff like that..

Hehe, reminds me of a documentary I saw about people who are preparing for the apocalypse. Exact same symptoms.

I say it's utter madness, don't get dragged along in it and don't take it seriously.

I think deep down a lot of people WANT the world to end. They will hold on to whatever leads they can, be it the bible, or the Mayan calendar ending (which isn't even correct) or Nostradamus, and go really to the deep end.
I also think these people feel like anarchy and chaos is the only situation in which they can prove themselves to be worthy "heroes" or survivors. Maybe the same mechanism in humans that needs enemies or needs drama. It's just another way of coping for them.

If I were you I would just ignore any crazy talk and on 21 december 2012, when your brother is hiding in some bunker, he will hopefully see it was all just paranoia and madness. Or he'll go in denial mode and pick another date in the future.

I watched the television show about that. They were training the children what steps to take if the apocalypse comes knocking at the door. I wanted to yell at the screen that hiding in the basement isn't going to save you.

But, on the other hand I'm prepared for a Zombie Apocalypse. I play Resident Evil so it's all good.
But it does sound like your brother is overreacting.
I know the saying it's better safe than sorry. But you can't be safe from a zombie apocalypse, or when food runs dry, can't hide from mother nature and no matter how many buckets of water you have no solar flare will be stopped.

After the time passed everyone started laughing at how ridiculous it was.
About 15 New Yorkers just stopped (never thought you'd see the day) and were chilling on the step of this church with us waiting for it to end. Nothing ended.
So, on that note I do not believe 2012 is going to happen.

Are you referring to that old guy who changed his prediction for the end of world from March to October 2011? If so, I do remember that.

Anyway, regarding this whole December 21, 2012 thing... I don't believe anything is going to happen. It's all hype.

Yes! That's the guy. Last year he tried to scare everyone and he was wrong twice.
It was May 21st he said the world was going to end but he said something about it starting in March.

The California radio preacher made a name for himself and Family Radio by claiming the world would end on May 21 - then again on October 21.

Lol I play shooting games yet when I go play airsoft I'm hardly ever the guy infront, yes I'm a chicken**** haha.

Anyways on topic, I don't think something will happen either I read an article in which they stated that the maya calender is actually a bit wrong (I believe it's supposed to be X amount of years LATER than 21/12/2012).

I believe that day was NEVER EVER mentioned as the end of the world on the Mayan calender (where this story originates). But rather it's the end of the Mayan calender cycle, meaning that just as when a car tire goes full circle, it ends up at the beginning. It does so every 5.000.00 years or so.

It being the end of the world is terrible misinterpretation of how it works. It's just not true. Just a misconception hyped by masses.


Same thing goes for the continental rift, end of time, planet collision and solar storms. Hyped stories with no scientific foundation revolving around a date that sound way too good to be true. 12-21-12? That sounds way too orchestrated (notice ''21'' is reverse ''12'').

While solar flares and collision with Earth could spell the end of the planet, it's extremely unlikely that they will happen all of the sudden in the next few months.

I believe that day was EVER mentioned as the end of the world, but rather at the end of -a- calender. It's the end of the Mayan calender, which means the cycle restarts, it never meant anything was going to end.

It being the end of the world is terrible misinterpretation of how it works. It's just not true. Just a misconception hyped by masses.

hmm, well that makes more sense - restarting the cycle over.
