we can't think or believe something into existence any more than we can think or believe something out of existence

the best we can do is to stop thinking and believing long enough to clear our minds in order to try to see what is there

Very well put Coyote. Blind faith can be a dangerous thing as well. Becomming nothing more than a mindless lemming without question is exactly how followers of cults come to be. (i.e. Heaven's Gate, Branch Dividian, Jonestown Guyana).

Many of the claims made in the bible were simply due to man's ignorance about things at that time. It was their way of explaining what they did not understand. Now that man has a better understanding of science and physics...the stories of the bible seem less believable than than science fiction.

I am a realist. It is the same reason why I don't believe in ghosts, demons or aliens...zero eveidence whatsoever. I am not saying that anyone is "wrong" for having faith in God if it truly makes them feel happy inside. I just find it a bit humorous that so many still spend so much of their lives blindly following things that are so far fetched. You guys are missing out on all the fun we are having at the bar accross the street!

"Scientologists", however, are something completely different and on a whole different level of ridiculousness. (Sorry) Here is a relatively new religion based soley on sceince fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard's science fiction novel. C'mon now, really? Scientology, like many religions, is all about controlling their followers based on fear all while fleecing them for every dollar they can get.

Oh hey...cute bunny BTW! LOL

All I know is my mammy and pappy conceived me, I popped out 9 months later, and now I’m typing on a social phobia forum. But from what I've heard, the universe is nearly 14 billion years old and I have absolutely no recollection of what went on before I was born. It's slightly disconcerting to think that when I die, another 14 billion years will go by, and I will still have no recollection of what is going on. So do I believe in a God, yesssssss, I will believe in anything, a walking, talking, singing, dancing daffodil, if it meant I could carry on existing. Although I would prefer to know what kind of existence that would be before I signed up for it.

I kind of compare religion to a talent show. It's like you know you have to impress the Big Guy, so you go through life trying your best to wow him. My idea of wowing consists of helping people if I can, treating others how I expect to be treated myself, and more importantly, I recycle. That alone should be the clincher for getting me through to the next round. Even though I don't have an affiliation with any religion, I can't see why I wouldn't be welcomed into Heaven. I practically live like a monk anyway, minus the crop circle hairstyle and groovy robes. But If it means I will be denied access through those pearly gates, all because I didn't believe, then maybe I don’t want to be a part of that place after all.

Edit: if God is reading this, I didn't mean a word of that. I think you are fabulous and I'm one of your biggest fans. Although I do think you could have designed me better. Did you have to make it so big. I could have someone’s eye out with what you've given me.

Religion has been influenced by far too many factors over the course of history. Some things just seem too perfect to not have been made up by leaders of nations just to keep the population content. (Oh, don't worry that you're poor and starving...when you die you'll get a good life) That's 1 way to keep the lower classes in ancient times from rebelling.

Not to mention the number of different religions and the different geolocations of them. Born in Ireland today? Congratulations! you get to be a catholic, the correct religion!
Born in Ireland 1000 years ago? Oh dear, you're a pagan. Have fun burning in hell forever for something that wasn't in your control.

^^ I agree. Religion has also been an excuse for many atrocities throughout history... And personally, I have many, many problems with them, not least the fact that they're easily disprovable.

But then, who ever said that an idea of a Deity had to be connected to a religion? Who said that it had to be revealed through a holy text? There are plenty of people who do believe in a god of sorts (ranging from a personal god to a "force", from a creator of individual species to a "thought" at the beginning of the Universe) who are in no way religious... Indeed, I can think of many who actively hate religion and would like to see it gone forever...

^ What if the "true" religion/god has been lost in history already? Does this mean we are all doomed forever? What if the "true" religion hasn't been unveiled to us yet? (Man lived for an estimated 98,000 years before Jesus came, so what did they all do?)

I would imagine that if I were omnipotent and had the power to create a universe and life within it, I wouldn't care too much whether a man slept with 2 women or another man. We crush bugs/flies every day without notice. To any form of God, we are much less than a fly is to a human.

Who says there need be a "true" religion?

Surely any god would not be worthy of the title if they actually cared about petty things like whether you worship them or not. I personally believe that if there is a god, then it wouldn't be in the least bit bothered about whether people worshiped it, or whether people even believed in it... If it has any kind of "personality" at all, that is... It's far more likely to be beyond personality and to be pure energy, perhaps with motive, perhaps with a form of love or intellect of sorts...

As I said, I disagree with all religions, though I do still believe in the idea of a god.

^^ But that's getting bogged down into thinking that any religion is right... I take the view that no religion is right and that a person can have a belief in a Deity far outside the realms of any religion. Religions claim exclusivity, but that doesn't mean a god (if there be one) would do the same... As I said, there are anti-religious theists... Most call themselves "Deists".

I rated myself as a 2.

I believe in a higher power which I currently define as the creative source that underlies all of existence and the whole that is greater than sun of it parts.
More than that, I believe in something transcendent and sublime—starting with my own soul.

I do not affiliate myself with organized religion.

You want to know how I got these scars?
Too many cruel and terrible things that happen in the world for me to believe in a god.

and if 'god' created all life, cancer is life.. pretty cruel and sick joke from the 'creator' huh?

Nope, no god for me.

I'm an agnostic I believe that there may not be a god or an after life but I more strongly believe that once you die you are reborn in a whole new galaxy or world. I don't ever bash people's beliefs though because I respect people's beliefs, but if they were to push it on others that would make me mad.

Ok then. I thought I was agnostic but it looks like I might be more weak theist. Im ok with there not being any kind of supreme being but I find things look a lot less pointless in thinking there is.

i voted for number 2 since i believe in god (but i'm not religious), and in regards to science and believing in god (not religion) i've always actually found science to be a proof of god ; to me witnessing all of the beauty and symmetry in nature( and the science behind it that we still have yet to discover), indicates that there's a wise power behind all of this and all of this can only have been deliberately designed by a stronger power than the human kind. I think the below quote from einstein explains this better:
