Why is it?

Why is it that people are shocked and treat you like crap if you tell them that you never went to college?

I guess it's because going to college is just a thing you're meant to do. I never got any higher education (yet), and I think people are generally shocked I'm not doing anything like that, either.

Also it's because people want to feel like they're better than others in any way possible.

Is just like everything else. People always expect you to follow a certain "norm". That norm being growing up, go to college, move out of your parents house, get a job, then get married and eventually have children. And if you do not follow any of this for certain reason it comes out as a shock because is what society has estabilsh as the "normal thing to do". But this is a stereotype that should be broken, unfortunately it won't happened because we are already used to think this way. we have that mind frame already set up. Don't get all worked up for what people may think it is the "right thing to do". Just keep moving forward without paying attention to this kind of things.

people are brainwashed into thinking that if you dont go to college all you'll ever be able to do is flip burgers at mcdonalds and that since you didnt go to college they assume you werent smart enough to get in or that youre lazy.
while theyre a plenty of idiots out there with college degrees, and plenty of people out there with masters degrees that are flipping burgers.

i know all the teachers, guidance councellors, and career councellors pushed me and pushed me to go to college, though ive never wanted to go to college ever. it seemed like when i'd say "i dont want to go to college", theyd react to it as if i said my life goal was to be a porn star or something

I never get treated badly because I dropped out of college. College can be great, but it certainly isn't a necessity. I'm quite happy with my career outlook.

oh goodness you just touched on a serious hot button for me! My exhusbands family treated me like some sort of trashy moron criminal bc I didn't do the 4 year thing. It's such bull****. A college degree says nothing other than "I paid a sh*t-ton of money to get this piece of paper that taught me absolutely nothing about the real world and practically nothing about the job i'll be working."

Ugh i hate college snobs. SO freaking irritating.

its no excuse to treat people like crap, but college is not always "I paid a sh*t-ton of money to get this piece of paper that taught me absolutely nothing about the real world and practically nothing about the job i'll be working."

Some degrees are very difficult and is equivalent to work experience. Depends on the degree i guess some are very difficult and good some are not.

I struggled in college to finish. My degree was very difficult, but i was so scared of the real world because of my lack of skills with dealing with the world, so i really wanted to do my best. My parents would kill me too if i dropped out.

Its the same thing like a highschool graduate making a highschool drop out feel like crap. Or a masters degree graduate making a college graduate feel like crap, or a successful person making a non successful person feel like crap, i think there are no confines to people making ppl feel like crap for their feeling of superiority

I don't treat anyone differently if they have never been to uni or didn't finish or whatever. I think it's perfectly possible to learn just as much as at uni or even more (it depends on the person, I need uni because without it I'd be too lazy :p) by doing other things, like teaching yourself or just working.

If someone treats you like crap because you never went to college it's because that person is an *******, ignore whatever that person says as much as you can. Just do what makes you happy, if college doesn't make you happy (or you can't go for whatever reason) don't worry, there are a million opportunities out there and all of them can be just as good as going to college or more.

Maybe the impression or reputation of college drop outs is they're lazy. It is true for some people, but not all. Its a stereotype but if there are statistics or surverys of 'do you regret not finishing college', maybe many do regret it. College is a time when alot of people mess up and fool around

Some ppl i know who have dropped out tell me they regret not finishing, some do not.

Really talented people are the exception. If you're really talented, chances are you won't be dissed for being a dropout.

And it is because i am not talented that i stayed in college.

Yes, I'm familiar with that reaction... Your post makes me wonder about how old you are... At age 39, the reaction I get can be chilling.

I would've loved to have gone, but it hasn't been in the cards, so to speak.

I probably wouldn't have done well had I tried when I was younger. I didn't know what was wrong with me was social anxiety. I asked my Dad, & he said it was depression...
Now that I have that area of my life better managed, I'm always totally broke.
Hopefully, in the next year or two, I can take a chance on trade school, or something... possibly. sigh*

100 years ago people looked down on you if you didn't have some schooling.

50 years ago you were expected to have done at least part of high school,

20 years ago you should have completed high school

Today you should have done college

And in 50 years time a PhD will be the minimum expected qualification.

i'm proud of getting into the school i did, and obtaining a degree

but it didn't qualify me for anything i've done career-wise

and it certainly didn't make me any better than anyone else

some people don't have anything else that they can hang their hat on

i've known a lot of very successful people who never went to college

and i've known a lot of very unsuccessful people with graduate degrees

I can't stand people who behave like that. It's so shallow, and it assumes that there's this "correct" way to do things, and that not going to college is somehow inferior.

Interesting thought. I may still be alive to witness this, too.

I wonder about that though. Going to college is becoming more and more expensive, and it typically involves getting into a lot of debt. That only makes sense financially if it enables you to earn a significant amount of money in order to pay off that debt. More and more college graduates are having difficulty finding jobs, so if that trend continues the incentive to get yourself into debt over something that doesn't offer you any advantage in the job market could start to diminish.

Is that your opinion of people who don't?
If so
I really appreciate you making me feel even more inferior.
I dropped out of middle school and was home schooled outside of the system.
I was the wrong color and had no athletic ability so scholarships were never an option.
My parents have the worst credit on the planet so no chance of student loans
My only interest was horses, riding ,training and breeding. few in that industry would give 2 cents about a fancy piece of paper from a school.
But now at the age of 30 I am useless after losing 85% of my vision at age 28.
I don't think any fancy degree would have stopped that and I am sure it would have been a great deal of money down the crapper.

Thank you for confirming that I SHOULD have gone and still ended up useless and unhappy.

I finished college but I definitely don't consider myself to be better than anyone. I actually feel behind in life because I basically spent 4 years spending an assload of $$ for a crappy degree that hasn't helped me much. I don't think anyone should go until they *really* know what they want to do. Ever since I graduated, I typically can't stand college talk or the cocky college kids that I see around town :p
