Being an Atheist doesn't automatically rule it out... There are Atheists I've personally known who do believe in an afterlife...
There are many definitions of Atheism. I'm one of those "I'm free of religion and superstitions" guys, and your friend is probably one of those "I don't believe in god, but in a lot of other supernatural stuff nobody can prove and that makes no sense".
You talk about evidence without giving any.
If there'd be scientific evidence that some sort of life after death would exist, it would be the most important discovery in the history of mankind. That evidence would reshape our society as we know it. None of that is happening. Because there is no evidence.
Like what?I agree 100% with this... But then, there is very little proof for many things which we do accept scientifically... Lots of evidence, but very little absolute proof...
Everyone can believe what he/she wants to, in my opinion. There are, for me, hundreds of reasonable arguments against some sort of life after death, and no single argument speaking for it. As such, it seems not logical to me, and I'm convinced that, when we die, we just cease to exist. As for my personal opinion on the subject... I have to say, I am completely agnostic about it. I simply do not know. I am completely open to all possibilities... I have read many books upon the subject and there is some very interesting evidence, but nothing strong enough to sway me either way...
IF some sort of afterlife would exist, the chance for it being something pleasurable are as high as the chance for it being a nightmare so utterly horrible that you couldn't ever imagine it. So be careful what you are wishing for. I don't like ceasing to exist either, so I think that it's a pity, that I haven't been born a century later or so, since then science might be able to stop the aging process.I personally hope that there is some form of afterlife, although I think I'd be a little disappointed with reincarnation... I don't wish to be someone else... I'm most drawn to becoming part of a "whole", perhaps combining with infinite love/energy/awareness... Or something to that effect. Although, I'd be equally happy with floating around the universe, exploring it...
If you'd reincarnate, you couldn't be disappointed, since your memory would obviously be wiped clean, and you'd be a totally new person. It wouldn't really matter if you'd die or reincarnate, unless you'd be able to keep your memories.
