I think it s not wise to hang out on this site or any other.Ask yourself how many hours are u with your computer in a day. There are lots of ways to beat SA, lots of entries written here have a point but if u do not shut your computer or tv it s not gonna work.Internet s not real u can get information updates here but u cannot socialize, u gotta go out show yourself, just try it.Noone s gonna beat it just writing here or sitting in own room and sleeping daytime.
First step is not to reply this thread:)

I agree that spending too much time on a computer is bad for you.

But For people With SA, Sites like this can be their only lifeline. You can socialise online. I know Its not the same as it is in real life, but you can learn how to talk to people, but in a less intimidating way than in real life. You can start off posting on the forums and PMing, then once you are confident with that move chat and MSN, then move onto real life from there.

You have to be careful not to become too reliant on the Internet, But for me anyway it is really helpful to get used to speaking to different people and making friends, and its helped me feel more comfortable in the real world too

If this site makes anyone worse, then I would suggest to them that they come off it. All of us know that this website will not instantly cure us. It's just a website that we can go on whenever we like and talk to people with the same condition who will not judge us.

Besides many come on at times when they have nothing else to do.

it's good to mix it up =) most of the good memories come from being out.. same with the bad. Being on the computer too much strains. The point is the first sentence..

If I shut down my computer, I lose contact with my friends, with the world, and I might go insane. And there's nothing to do outside, because I can't relate to anyone where I am.

You can socialize online, you can make friends online. I met my best friends and my guy online. We aren't just words on a screen, you know?. I do understand what you mean though, that being online for too many hours isn't the best option. But in some cases it's not that easy to just go out. If I had the motivation, the energy, I'd go out all you want... but that doesn't mean I'm going to have fun or stop feeling like an outcast. I do go out if I have to, but sometimes It feels worse than being here in my "cave".

And I'm pretty sure that most people here are aware that this site is not made to beat their SA. It's a support site, maybe even a social site, considering that you can talk to others and even make friends here.

Anyway, I'm sorry if I sound like I'm bashing your post. I know you mean well. I'm just voicing an opinion, that's all :)

Hmm yeah but to be fair i do go on the computer at 2 hours most no more. But i shouldnt be proud of that should i? :)
I do think this site is good because everyone feels the same and we all feel like we belong. When your outside with 'normal' people you feel lost. Well i do sometimes anyway and sometimes its nice to get away and be with people who care and understand. It would be better if i had them people around me in real life instead of on a computer but i havent so there.

I do agree though going out into the fresh air is better than being indoors. It really raises my mood.

Nah, you just have to discipline yourself, and not hide behind your computer. Being here, on this site is actually helping me allot. I wouldn't be nearly as motivated to improve if it wasn't for all the nice and insightful people here. :3

Well, on the contrary, I think this place helps. Every time I come here and ask for help, a lot of people respond to me and insist on helping, and that cheers me up a lot, and really helps tail away some of the anxiety and depression that I'm feeling. This place feels like another home to me.
I assume what you're thinking is that we're totally nuts about this site and can't get our eyes peeled off the screen. But that's not the case, this place is where we can get things off our chests and have fun for once interacting with people. It doesn't mean that we're not trying our best overcoming our fears, I consider this place to be the place where we can get encouraged, cuz without that we won't be able to overcome our fear. We need a momentum you know?

Too much of anything will do harm to you, I think as long as you only stay on for a reasonable time there's no harm. It's just about moderation.

There is more to it then just spending too much time on the computer. I have a brother and sister who spend almost the same amount of time on the computer as I do yet they still social lives also. The difference is they are able to socialize while online whereas I can't do it so well.

Yeah that would probably do wonders for me. It would make me so miserable that I would have no choice but to venture outside to find entertainment.... or I would kill myself. haha, well probably not.. but it's hard to push myself to put mysel in that much pain for the glory that would come faster than slowly exposing myself. And I don't think I'd have anybody to talk to, not a single soul, that wouldn't change just because I'm outside riding my bike...well..actually it might.. maybe i'm in denial.

Well, my computer is about my only source of fun, so no thanks. If I just shut it off and didn't let myself use it I'd be so bored and I'd have no way to just chill and get away from stress and I'd get even more depressed.::(:

Well, $#!@.

All this time I thought I was interacting with other humans on this site. Time to end it, though.

But at least I'll get better at playing my guitar. At least that's what happened in college when I wasn't spending as much time putzing around on a computer.

Of course I know what you mean. It's just too good to not pass up....

:D
