I have some comments and real life..someone little bit out of touch
he is called a nerd with social phobia.. and almost always nerd with combination
of socialphobia..why these pre judgements.
The media should give more attention to this, that is not some little
phobia

I'm not quite sure I understand (it's late, I'm tired!).

Are you saying that people have been calling you a nerd?

It's quite an offensive term. If anybody called somebody a nerd at my school, they'd be sent to the headteacher.

I have SA and I'm far from a nerd. But I think a lot of people think that those two go together.

According to Google a nerd is defined as:
1. A foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious: "one of those nerds who never asked a girl to dance".
2. An intelligent, single-minded expert in a particular technical discipline or profession.

So social anxiety is often mistaken for social ineptitude which is apparently associated with being a "nerd".
I do remember being called a nerd at school because my anxiety made me concentrate more on my work and I didn't have many friends (because I didn't talk much, you see...). The people in my class were actually surprised when I told them that I really hate school work/homework.

If you watch the tv show,The Big Bang Theory, there is one guy in the group that can't even talk when women are present. Sadly, Hollywood has also seemingly dubbed anxiety, etc, in conjunction with nerd.

I've been called a dork, nerd, goober....

I am not smart enough to be a nerd.... but I am very nerdy. I look like one and social ineptness is a 'nerdy' trait.

Anyway... I thought nerds were cool now? I dont know, I dont understand anything anymore...damn kids...and your...music...

At high school I was known as "the nerd", but as hard as it may seem to believe hat nickname didn't had an offensive connotation. So I never saw it as offensive, and I don't mind being called a nerd, I consider myself quite nerdy if you ask me.

I have SA and I'm a nerd. I don t really take offense to the term nerd, I kinda take pride in it lol. I just accept the fact that I am, however it could definitely be offensive if you are not a nerd and someone is still calling you that. Oh well, nerds unite!!!!

Nerd is related to social anxiety because when someone thinks of a nerd they think of that person being a bookworm and anti-social. It's just another one of the thousands of insults that have been created to make insecure people feel better about themselves.

If you ask me, being a nerd is good thing because when I think nerd, I think of a smart person. It's better than being cool and dumb (I'm not saying cool people are dumb). A nerd may be socially awkward, but they also can achieve stuff like having a good job. The cool and dumb person may have an easier time socially but they also may be unemployed.

I'm not saying it's terrible to be unemployed, I know it's not easy to get a job nowadays, I was just using that as an example of why nerd=good imo.

Aren't there studies that point out that high IQ=more success on average? I thought I read that somewhere.

This reminds me of a flower delivery where this receptionist called me a nerd when I was leaving. I remember thinking, "Hmm, the joke's on you there gal. You may be calling me socially awkward, but you are also calling me intelligent. Not much of an insult there, haha."

I've been called a nerd a lot of times, though I am not (nerds are smart). It annoyed me, but not that much.
I've been called a freak too and even though this one is true it annoyed me a lot. Now I'm the one calling myself a freak.

Nerds are awesome.

They grow up to make a lot of money.

..and they are not morons like the rest of the population.

I'd take it as a compliment. :D
