Describe your music taste changes throughout the years

When I was young I listened to whatever CD's my brother had. This varied from crappy 90's House to Tupac, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Moby, Bryan Adams.

Then at 14/15 I got really into Trance music because friends of mine at school were very into it. We went to a lot of parties, friends of mine were DJ's there.

Then at about 17 I had a period when I went into "serious music". I dismissed the Trance scene as airheaded themepark music and I had my introduction to a lot of those "classic" rock bands (you know, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Metallica and all that) and then later at 20 I got more into Indie music, as that was getting big at the time (The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, White Stripes, all those bands).

In my mid twenties I got more indie, Arcade Fire, Fleet Foxes, Beirut, Bon Iver, Animal Collective etc.

Now a very strange thing is happening. I'm 27 now and lately I've been longing back to those carefree days when I was 15/16 and actually find myself listening to Trance music that was popular at that time. It makes me feel good! I guess a big part of it is nostalgia though.

But it seems I have a really versatile taste for music. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I never really settled for anything. (identity issues) Not that it matters really, music is to be enjoyed and I dislike it when people get all uppity or elitist over it. Though on the other hand I guess that also means people are passionate about it, which is good.

Anyone else had such drastic music changes? Share em.

At around 10 I started listening to a christian radio station daily, and my mom bought me some christian Rock CDs here and there. The best one she bought me, that I still listen to today and love, is Switchfoot's Nothing Is Sound. So for awhile I mainly listened to christian Rock, but I also listened to some bands that my parents listened to, like ELO, The Cars, Collective Soul and some others.

At about 13/14 I started to check out more christian Rock bands, and then a lot of mainstream rock bands, like Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, etc. Since I was homeschooled didn't even know about the existence of most bands. The internet changed that for me.

Around 15/16 I wanted more, so I started checking out forums to find new music. I started getting into metal, but had a hard time at first. At this time I stumbled across Buckethead and really liked his stuff.

So for a few years I started to slowly get into metal and music similar to Buckethead.

At around 17/18 I was really getting into metal. Bands like Megadeth, Metallica, Black Sabbath, etc. And since then I have gotten more and more, going for more brutal stuff (from Heavy/Thrash to Death, to Grindcore, etc). At the same time, I started getting into a lot of bands you have mentioned, Arcade Fire, White Stripes, etc. And others like Bright Eyes, Pink Floyd.

It's hard for me to map this out very accurately for organized because not long after I had a decent computer and internet in my room, I started really exploring the internet, music, video games, movies, etc. I went crazy and haven't let up yet. Basically since around the time I got internet, my musical tastes have continued to expand and so has my collection. It's massive now compared to what it was years ago.

these were the main genres I was listening to at a particular time but I also listened to a bit of everything at times.
when I was a child it was pop music, some pop rock, michael jackson and the occasional charting dance song sometimes parents music too, like genesis.
when I got to my teens it was grunge, metal, classic rock, punk and rave. when I got to college it was dance, electronic, punk and some hip hop. then drum n bass, techno, old hardcore. when I got into my 20's I started discovering dub roots reggae and was also listening to alot of idm, electro, dnb, techno, nu jazz, popular dance. around my mid 20's I got into breakcore, ambient, disco, alternative rock. since then its mainly been stuff like experimental and heavy rock, indie, pop, hip hop, glitch, alternative dance, chillwave and idm.

so yea I have a broad taste generally and on the whole i've not really grown out of any genres just come back around to them. certain styles i'll listen to intensely and more than others over periods of a few years but i'll listen to the occasional bit of everything every once in a while.

I've given techno a try and I liked it. The rest didn't change much. I still like a variety of things.

I didn't listen to music when I was younger. My first favourite band was The Corrs. In those years (I don't remember how old I was), I would also like popular stuff that passed on the radio. A few years later I started getting into rap and hip hop and stuff like that.
After that I went to normal pop-rock songs, and eventually more on the rock side than pop because of a girlfriend I had at the time. I was around 14/15.

Then I started going to metal. Folk/symphonic/power/melodic metal without growls and screaming. At that point I was also into folk, specially without vocals and with violins. I liked the pace, the instruments used and the feel of adventure or something like that.
At the end of that I had a short phase where I started listening to "older" songs, like Sweet Child O' Mine.

After that I listened to bands like Oasis, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, The Smiths, Slow Club, Placebo, Hoobastank, Incubus, blink 182,... . I also started getting more into piano songs.

When I started watching anime I really liked the songs in the openings/endings because of the feeling I got from them, even if I couldn't understand the lyrics. They just had that feeling of adventure I mentioned earlier. Besides that, I really liked the way the language sounded. So I started to listen to those openings and endings from the shows I watched.

Right now I'm in that phase (started about a year ago), but I also listen to songs I used to listen in the past (except rap and hip hop), sometimes more often than other times. I think I was two months without listening much to english songs, then yesterday I started listening to english songs again.

As a kid..my first CD was a Chumbawumba single, and I liked a lot of pop. I used to be into a lot of 80s as a kid because my sister was older and it was all she listened to. New Romantic/Alternative rock. Also she was a massive Joy Division fan, so got into them.

Lots of 90s alt/indie throughout my adolescent years..

When I was 12 I first heard Nirvana's cover of Bleach. Started listening to Radio 1 rock show. Obsessed with Nine Inch Nails.

Started liking nu-metal and alt-rock bands like Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Placebo, Marilyn Manson, Radiohead etc when I was 14.

16ish, into a lot of grungey bands that my friend liked (AIC, Mudhoney, Green River etc) and REALLY into black/melodic/death/doom metal.

Thanks to the internet, 18, met 2 friends who have been amazing with music. The holy grail of friends who supplies at least 70 per cent of the music I like, and Black Metal/Doom friend who is probably responsible for another 20. Was into screamo and indie at the time.

When I hit my twenties got really into Post-rock/Post-metal (thank you holy grail friend).

Now: I still like a lot of the music I've always liked (not just for nostalgia factor), but lately seem to be listening to a fair bit of shoegaze/blackgaze. Decided my favourite kind of music is anything with a 'melancholy sound'. If I go out to a club (hahahahaha) I'll dance to whatever's playing. If I need recommendations, use holy grail friend or black metal friend. Don't spend time looking for music any more.. I'm a leech.

Hah, it's like we grew up together.
Except replace Chumbawumba (no idea what that is) and Joy Division with Soul Asylum, Shakespear's sisters and Metallica when I was a kid and add folk and bluegrass in the present. :p

1991 to 2004: Nothing.

2004 to 2005: Hard rock.

2005 to 2008: Hard rock and rap.

2008 to 2009: Exclusively classic.

2009 to 2013: EVERYTHING.

Now I like practically all types of music and music tastes. With the exception of Hardcore and Hardstyle. I just can't find a single song in that genre that doesn't sound awful to me.

Up to about 11 years old, I liked pop music that was out then--Britney spears, NSYNC, Backstreet Boys. All of them.

Then from 12 to about 14, I was listening to Linkin Park and Nickelback and Evanesence. At 15, I started listening to all the things my mom liked (classic rock and oldies) along with a lot of metal and hard rock. And from 16 to about now, it's basically been a mix of pop and alternative rock with a few other things thrown in.

I still like all the music I've ever enjoyed but in order of fondness it went something like this...

Indie/Alt Rock as a small kid (5-10 years) (Faith No More, Blur etc - older siblings influence) -> 90's dance -> The Beatles -> Chart-pop from age 12 onwards -> Grunge, punk, metal until age 16 -> Ska punk -> Canadian/US indie bands at around age 19 (Of Montreal, New Pornographers etc) and pretty much still this although I'm also getting quite into electro atm.

Interesting thread!

I listened almost strictly to Oldies as a child.

Around 10 yrs old my mom started letting us listen to modern music, which was just in time for me to get really into grunge.

In highschool I went through my classic rock phase.

Early twenties I started branching just a tiny bit into the indie scene, with more popular bands like Jack Johnson and Death Cab for Cutie.

Late twenties, I dated a guy who downloaded literally weeks' worth of music onto my laptop, which I have yet to listen to all of it. I go mainly with more obscure indie rock these days, but I like an eclectic mix of pretty much everything.

Who knows where the future will take me.

Didn't really start listening to music until 11/12. Began with rock, techno and trance. Got interested in alternative rock and nu-metal such as early Coldplay, Linkin Park and trailer music from Two Steps from Hell and E.S Posthumous. Still listen to some trance but not as much as before. Genres such as rap/hip hop don't appeal to me.

Didn't really care about music before my preteens.

When I was around eleven, I started listening to some rock and indie artists. Later I started getting into some techno, mainly drum and bass, but also some indie/pop/techno blends and dubstep. Last year I discovered symphonic metal and my current favourite band. I'm trying to get more into metal in general... Any pointers, metalheads?

I always sticked with mostly classical music - classic rock, classic hard-rock, classic pop, classic disco, classic orchestral/instrumental/folk. With a few exceptions, such as "symphonic metal" & psychedelic. And almost no rap, thrash, drum'n'bass, club, & all those other modern styles.

Not really a metalhead, but two of my favorites are Metallica (the album "S&M"), and King Crimson. Also Cypress Hill is pretty awesome as well.

Are you familiar with Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth Pantera, Slayer, Machine Head? Oh, and Motörhead (technically a Rock N' Roll band to quote the legendary Lemmy Kilmister).

Could go on and on. Do ye want some album recommendations? (From me, obviously!)

I grew up to country and Celtic music when I was a kid. Started playing guitar at 7 and by the time I was 10/11 years old, I got into punk rock. Then I was obsessed with the band blur and then punk on the other side. Through out high school, if it wasn't punk, it didn't exist according to me. Then after high school I got into the 90s Seattle scene, then had a crazy metal phase till I was 22. Then I became more diverse. Some folk, some ska. Then I started smoking weed and it went to stoner rock, sludge, psychedelic rock, old school rock. And that's where I'm at now. Still I'm tolerant of most music.
