Bothered by Pro-Ana sites

Watching too much porn can lead to erectile problems, not feeling sexually aroused around women, inadequacy, and so on. It's very detrimental for men.

Not to mention the - ahem - image issues that can result in women because of it. In my opinion it is difficult to find porn that is not degrading to women in one way or another. (but it does exist)

You make a valid point, Marie. And to prove your point even further, please feel free to recommend, erm, I mean point out the ones that don't degrade women. Purely in the name of research, of course.

Passions makes female friendly porn. maybe you should check that out.

How did this go from ProAna to porn?

it's like when I used to go on the pro-suicide sites. It felt so supportive but in the end I learned it was only hurting me more. I just wish that everyone could see how beautiful they truly are, everyone has worth, everyone deserves to be happy. It makes me sad that people think otherwise.

Yeah, just so not everyone here thinks I'm a huge hypocrite, I admit that I used to visit sites that discussed and sometimes even encouraged self-destructive behavior. However, like another has mentioned, I realized that in the end, those sites are not good for me and kept my thoughts fixated on continuing my bad habits. In a way, I realized the "lie," and I have hope for others that they can eventually do the same.

The reason I wouldn't put SPW and other forums like this in the same boat, though, is relatively simple, these places are moderated and usually take a hard line against posts that support dangerous practices. It is one thing for someone having a lot of social difficulty to say "just give up, the world sucks, everyone's against us" and another to detail a method of self-harm. That's my take on it, though, and I admit I don't have all the facts, I'm no scholar, and so on.

Are you actually doing this?

A lot of girls/adult women do, Mikey. The official statistics are way under reality, as there are many undiagnosed cases around. I have gone through years of only eating enough so that I don't faint in public (too embarrassed to!). You just get really good at hiding it from people.

As for the internet being a tool for encouraging behaviour like this, that is nonsense. Long before the internet arrived I remember advice being passed around and discussions amongst girls of these behaviours when I went to high school. It has always been around, the internet websites just put it out in public for other people to read.

All the porn I've watched has been degrading to women. It's terrible, and yet I still watch it. :idontknow:

Wow, I didn't know you went through this as well, BlueDays. Girls really do a lot to feel good about themselves.

It's not always about just to "feel good about" yourself. I know no matter how thin I was, I never felt good about myself.

In many cases it is just to just be accepted and "fit in" with societies warped idea of what "hot" is.
I have also read articles where numerous former models have stated that they never felt "ok" with there bodies. They were always made to feel that there was something that needed to be "fixed" with their bodies, and they were stick thin models!

I'm not sure if you are just trolling there. The medical consensus is that masturbation is a medically healthy and psychologically normal habit. Where did you get those "strange ideas" from?

I guess books, movies, advertisment and so on are also detrimental to the health, as most of them show women in traditional roles?

Yeah, it's hard for women to feel like they're okay with their bodies when the idea for what a woman should look like is splashed everywhere. I'm not female so I'll never understand the struggle.

I beg your pardon?

Let's type "sex detrimental for men" on Google.

We can also type "why the Earth is hollow" on Google and *gasp* learn that it IS hollow.

Sure, if you masturbate several hours a day, it is unhealthy. Same as if you wash your hands several hours a day or brush your teeth several hours a day. Yet I wouldn't run around claiming that brushing your teeth or washing your hands is uneahtlyh.

Well, got to go to work. Have a nice day everyone. :)

If you don't want to believe that excessive watching of porn is unhealthy for you, then I can respect your position, but I didn't like you accusing me of trolling when there are a myriad of studies linking watching porn and sexual problems in men. Whether or not you believe these studies doesn't warrant that sort of personal attack.

The diet industry has a lot to answer. So many unscrupulous individuals looking for an opportunity to make money out of people's suffering. When I was suffering from panic disorder, people wanted to make money out of miracle cures for that. When I was suffering knee pain, there were people trying to take advantage of my discomfort. There were these glowing testimonials, and then try to sell a cure for an exorbitant amount, which inviolved information readily available for free from various sources including online.

As you can see, that's what Mikey was talking about: excessiveness.
You should take the time to read carefully before going bananas on people.

As we talk about reading carefully, I was talking to someone saying that pornography is in general unhealthy to the consumer, which is nonsense.

Excessively? Absolutely everything is unhealthy in excessive amounts. Breathing, eating, showering. Yet do I run around shouting "stop breathing, eating and showering, because it's unhealthy?". The comment "XYZ is unhealthy in excessive amounts" makes no sense.

No, there is a huge and obvious difference there.

Please explain to me why pornographic movies are supposed to be unhealthy, but erotic literature and books are not.

Now I'm scared. I didn't know such things exist. But that's the Internet, freedom of speech and all. I don't like the whole idea of pro ana, and I'm quite disturbed by it, though I won't judge people who do that. It's your life, your body, and as long as you're not hurting anybody else, that's fine. I can't forbid you doing that.

Eh. I'm not following your line of thought here. Are we talking about "erotic literature and books" or are we talking about "books, movies, and advertisement?" :idontknow:

I guess this thread is about porn now.

Personally, I don't think it's unhealthy and comparing it to anorexia is stretching things a lot.

Anorexia is a serious disorder that can kill you, but porn addiction at its worse is just going to lead to a lot of wasted time, and maybe a few problems with your sex life. You're not going to die from it.

I also don't think it's any less unhealthy than romance novels or grisly horror... and I don't think that everyone is addicted to porn thinks that it's the way things really are, or that women like to be treated that way.

I do think that people who are lonely/rejected/etc. are more likely to develop 'unhealthy' attitudes to people in general and if they mix it with porn then that could also mean women... but that isn't due to porn as much as isolation and rejection.
