Are you shy

Just wondering how many people are actually shy here.
I know that there are some who function well in social situations but have other conditions that limit them socially - but are not necessarily shy.

Shyness in respect to being bashful, timid, reserved and being afraid of approaching people.

Yes? No? A bit more complicated... perhaps its situational...?

I am. A lot of people think that I am not - but I am. I feel it all the time and sometimes I can barely manage a whisper and act very very strange because I am so shy.

Yes. I told a doctor that I was shy and he gasped, "No, you aren't!" like I had just exclaimed that I was dying from terminal cancer.

There's nothing wrong with being shy and I hate how there's a stigma against shy people in the U.S.

I answered no. My depression gets in the way of talking sometimes, but I'm usually okay once I talk to someone.

At the same time, I overcompensate.

Yeah, it depends on who I'm talking to. Anyone who is judgemental, anyone who notices my anxiety. It is more like fear than shyness.

People pick up on my shyness, they treat me like a little timid child. Their tone of voice changes with me.
It's true though, although I wish people didn't baby voice me because I talk like a baby which I can't help.

Oh yes, extremely. People who have known me for all my life I am still too shy to talk to them.

My sister tried a conversation with me and I panicked and froze, I was looking or my mother really fast and started stuttering. It's so embarrassing to be this shy and timid. I feel so small.

Yeah, I'm super shy. And its always been a huge problem for me. I was bullied, ridiculed for being shy, told to get over it (like there's a switch or something)

Yes. It is embarrassing to be shy.

It is embarrassing to be shy. Unbelievable. The pain of shyness just does not stop. Not only are you shy to begin with... but because you are shy, you feel embarrassed by it.

Whats worse - is that shyness is not sympathized with. It's a trait that generally has a negative stigma attached to it. Making it even worse again.

I remember one French class I had and the lesson was about describing personalities. We had a discussion about what were good and bad personality traits. One of the outspoken people said she thought being shy was a bad thing. I remember sitting there being so annoyed at her and thinking, 'You don't know what you're talking about.' At the time I didn't say anything because I didn't have the confidence to, but that has nothing to do with my shyness. I was an overly self-conscious person back then.

^I think it depends. If being shy keeps people from getting what they want then it can be a problem but if the person is okay with it, there shouldn't be anything wrong.

That's a good point actually. I guess there are different degrees of shyness. But I do think that having poor confidence and self-image does affect your life more than shyness. Perhaps shyness is a consequence of the two things.

No I'm not coy or shy. I have an irrational panic/anxiety of crowds/men hence Social anxiety. People have said that I have appeared aloof but never a comment about appearing shy.

At school was fine, thn my HH got worse so I shy'd away from people, once I meat some one I'm shy but after couple of times with same person kinda feel normal/accepted. Group events not happening unless like a child I've got someone with me maybe.. shame on me cry

When people describe me they often use words like meek and timid. Yeah, I'm shy but when I first meet people I analyze them. I don't think being shy is a bad thing though.

yes, i'm actually very shy at first, until i get to know people or become comfortable in that environment

i tend to forget that i am shy and often put myself into situations that call for some level of assertiveness, so then i have to work very hard at being outgoing until i feel at ease, then it comes naturally

it's probably situational I tend to completely withdraw into my shell if there's a lot of people but unfortunately that can draw as much attention as being a really chatty person but I prefer one on one better sometimes.

Being shy ain't bad. Id say its better to get to know a shy person than having someone thrust upon me,like in your face,loud full of them selves. It's cool to analyze people at least you can determine witch type of character they are before having to ingage in conversation with them... I feel with a visible condition such as,HH shyness can be more embarrassment mixed with anxiety..
