Health/Fitness Thread

There is an exercise thread, so I figured I'd take that a step further and create a fitness thread, where you can post your exercise activities if you wish, but also talk about your diet, weight loss/gain goals, and anything really related to overall well-being and fitness. How's a bout it? :)

I'm thinking about joining a health care centre, fitness.
But I'm very skinny, so I don't know if this a good idea..
I love doing sports though.. I will think about it.

Trying to put on more muscle.

Currently 6'2" 170lbs. Hoping to put on ~10lbs. in the next 6 months or so.

Drinking 35g protein shakes at breakfast and lunch. 25g bars after workouts and whenever I want a snack. Avoiding sugar and fast food. (other than that, food is pretty much fair game - there's no way I'm giving up fried chicken)

Alternating muscle regions (Upper/Lower) for 6 days, 1 day rest. Torso every day. Workouts vary (school has a free gym membership!), but I always swim afterwards for cardio/cooldown.

...

I guess there are advantages to being slightly neurotic.

Workout 3 days a week
day 1 - back/triceps
day 2 - chest/biceps/abs
day 3 - legs/shoulders

Consume about 180-200g protein, 350-400g carbohydrates(complex), and 3000-3300 calories every day.

Have gained about 20-25 lbs in the past six months(granted some of it is fat).

^ I would assume so!

How much do you weigh? And your height? What are your goals? You may have to add some running in the mix and maybe an extra workout day, and cut calories a bit, unless you're trying to get huge rather than lean.

I am 5'9.5ish. I weighed 140 lbs and looked like a stick when i started and i have reached 165 lbs now. I try to do cardio about once or twice a week.
Goal is to reach about 180-185 lbs and then start doing cardio maybe about 5 days a week.

Can not afford to lose too many calories when trying to bulk up.

Yoga. I'm very new to it, and its quite painful at first, but its really helping me tone up, as well as balance and clear my mind.
So, you take yoga classes? Individual or in group sessions? :)
People tell me this would be a good thing for me, does it help for SA?
It's great to create balance between body and mind.
At the fitness centre here are yoga classes too :)

cardio/upper and lower body strength training/high protein low fat diet.

Yeah, I found a group yoga session near me so I started taking classes! I don't know much about the different forms but I'm doing 'Ashtanga Vinyasa', which is quite a physical form. I have only done two weeks of it so far. The first lesson I found it very difficult as you use muscle you've never used before, so its painful. Yesterday I reluctantly went again (and the past couple of weeks my S.A has been at its worst) and it was a lot better, and I focused on my breathing more and I've felt a LOT better for doing it. I feel I have a lot more clarity in mind, as well as the good feeling of having done some exercise! I'm very new to it, but I very much feel as though its the sort of thing that is quite painful at first but brings about great results for both body and mind by the end. The guy next to me, who's been doing it for a year, described it as "magical" once you get to grips with it. And everybody in the class seemed so calm and peaceful!
I'm going to stick at it and I would definitely recommend you give it a go too!! Even today, I was walking around town which I normally find quite stressful, but I was remembering my breathing techniques and I didn't find myself being as impatient as I normally am.
Give it a go
wow that's wonderful :) Good luck Twiggle, I hope it will help you a lot and bring you so much luck..! :) Yeah, breathing control is the right thing to attack the physical symptoms of SA, so I think this is one of the most effective ways to cope with sa, because even though we still have these thoughts, our body won't respond to it.. At least, we'll stay calm and relaxed so it wouldn't bother, such a stupid thought. :D

I've never heard of Ashtanga Vinyasa before.. lol, it sounds pretty interesting!

Good luck on taking classes, keep it up ...!!! ^^

I've done similar, 3 day - try similar diet. Hard to be consistent. The one thing I'm bad at aside from diet is cardio aspect. Aside from burning fat just for health. Esp during a gym day, tiring enough hard to muster energy cardio too or later.

I want to try and get back into Tai Chi. I could really learn to focus my qi or well actually GET some qi maybe =D

I've been gradually working on my fitness for a year. The past 2 months have been most intense, since I hope to feel more comfortable in my body when I finally venture out of my house without my mother there to hold my hand.
I'm going to visit Quebec City in 2 weeks. It'll be my first time out of Ontario and the first time in 3 years that I've gone anywhere without my mom or sister to hold my hand.
...I'm still unsure if it's a good idea or not... but I'm working on it.

I'm 5'5
By this point last year, I was 187lbs
Currently, I am 130lbs

I go out running for approximately 1hr, 6 mornings a week (about 4km)
40mins a day 4 days a week of boxing
25mins a day 4 days a week of strength training (focus on weak little girly arms)
I do 20mins a day of pilates
20mins a day of yoga

I'm unsure how many calories I take in per day because I don't count but I've decreased my serving sizes by half of what I'd been eating last year- I stick to fruits, veg, beans nuts and lentils and limit meat. I may only eat between 1-3 servings of meat/week--- but it's only limited that way because I can't afford to eat meat every day.

I'm trying not to focus on numbers... but in the last 2 months I've started a measurement chart. I take my measurements once a week.
Since I started this regime, I've lost almost 2 inches on my thighs and at least 1 inch everywhere else. (3 on my waist)
I still can't look at myself in a mirror but I do feel better over all. More energized.
I do all of my workouts on my own, since I'd trained and been involved in groups in the past- so I know what to do and I don't have the money or courage to join a gym or a fitness class anywhere.

no matter what your fitness goals are, you need to have a healthy diet. This is number freaking 1. Believe me. I work out for an hour a day 6 days a week. Hardcore strength training and running 2 miles a day. I still don't have washboard abs and ripped muscles because I still eat a lot of candy and sweets. It's extremely hard to break bad habits. Like, I smoke a pack a day as well. If I ate veggies and fruits instead of candy, I'd probably look like the dudes on fitness magazine covers.

you dont even need to be into fighting or know the perfect technique,I guarantee if you do once a day any tape, around 30 minutes, you will lose weight,if your diet is right, get fit, when I was doing this it really helped me,I could hit the mitts, heavybag, jump rope forever.

^ when I go over my limit, the next day I barely eat anything, well maybe 1,000 calories. I usually eat around 1,500-2,000 a day. I'm supposed to be eating 4,000 since I work out and run so much but I don't want to get huge.

I'm making a consistent effort to exercise as much as possible, but I'm completely resistant to the idea of counting calories and stuff like that. Sad as it sounds, eating things that taste good without spending lots of time on preparation is sort of a rare pleasure that I'm really reluctant to abandon. It's hard to give up the immediate pleasures of pizza and BLTS so I have the chance of experiencing the hypothetical pleasure of being physically attractive to another human. I wish I had a more physically flattering vice, like smoking or doing coke. ;) At least I'm honest about why I am slightly overweight-I just like eating food. I know I'm probably not eating as well as I should be, and I do it anyway, because it feels good. I'm a real American.

My diet at home is actually pretty decent, because I hardly ever add extra oil to food or anything, and I very rarely eat candy or chips. I've been eating terrible stuff all week, though, due to being out of town/traveling for a couple of days. I also have difficulty not eating too much when it's in front of me-when I cook alone, I very rarely eat too much, possibly because my cooking sucks and tends to be bland. A few years ago, when I was working a much more physical job and eating almost nothing BUT spaghetti and frozen vegetables at home, I lost a bunch of weight, which I eventually gained back.

I'm not a noticeably big guy, just sort of doughy. I think I'm fairly cardiovascularly healthy, and I've started lifting weights at home to work on my arms a bit. I'm also doing yoga to improve my flexibility and posture. I'm not in danger of becoming obese, but I'm just fat enough to be more unattractive than average (I'm 6'1'' and weigh around 245 lbs, for the record. Nothing gargantuan, but probably not the weight I should be at).
