Do any of you do regular exercise and does it help for you?

I just had one of my really really bad moments of being fed up with thoughts and emotions and feeling depressed and decided I would just go for a run in the dark.
It felt liberating and I'm even in the mood for life/people again as sad as that sounds.

I don't know if it's some chemical thing or a distraction of the mind but I feel so much better now and I think I will make this a daily thing to keep this positive feeling intact. Of course exercise is one of the most cliché and obvious remedies against depression/anxiety but I wonder if any of you experience the same during exercise or if you somehow feel restrained because of SA to go sporting?

I do, and though I'm still pretty well ****ed in the head, it's helped more than any pill or therapist ever has.

If nothing else, I'm at least confident in my body and physical ability.

Edit: Though I fear I might be 'that guy' who takes every opportunity to take his shirt off or get naked.

Edit2: I just like the breeze! I promise!

Lol, I think everyone should be allowed to be 'that guy'. It's a good feeling and if you worked hard for it, why not. As long as you don't push it to Matthew Mcconaughey-levels of vanity you should be okay.

I've been a jogger for a while, since high school at least. Jogging is the best method to help with depression that doesn't give you a hangover. I also lift weights and do push ups which help but not as much as jogging.

What I hate, though, is when people think it's the "cure" to depression and anxiety. I used to dream that having that long run would make me want to be around people but it never did.

I just remember this guy telling me, you know why you are so depressed? Cuz you don't exercise enough. Then i started running every day and guess what? I was still depressed. The running may take a little edge off, but it's not going to fix you.

I am happy that it's going to start warming up again so I can get back out there and jog. I'd say getting outside is very important for depression too. That sunlight really matters.

I ran all last summer, 5-6 days a week early early morning (3-4am) 8-16k.

I don't remember feeling different looking back but I think I had more energy and had an easier time sleeping.
My mood was about the same, though.

Yes. Running, going for walks on the beach or the forest, doing yoga once in a while. It gives me better energy and better sleep, and changes the mood a little bit I guess.

Haha, same for me. I work on my body but there's rarely an opportunity to take my shirt off without looking like a douchebag, so I never really do. I have a sort of private vanity going on though, so I doubt I'd be ostentatious even if I could get away with it. As long as I think I look decent, that's good enough for me.

As far as it helping, I suppose it has to a degree. I definitely feel more confident in certain areas of my life as a result. It's something you have complete control over, and that can be a very pleasant thing when you've felt powerless in the past.

I think regarding depression and anxiety, your best bet is probably good old fashioned outdoor cardio.

yeah i run or lift weights every day and it helps boost my mood for a few hours tops.it is in no way even close to a cure for sa or depression.my workouts have to be quite intense for there to be benefit as well and i admit it gets harder and harder to push myself to that degree the older i get.

When I exercise regularly, it improves my mood and helps me sleep better. It also makes me feel more confident and health conscious, because I can keep track of my progress and see improvement.

I lift weights and go for walks. I also get exercise for gym class, which is twice a week.

I try to do some exercise 3 or 4 times a week. I blast my favourite tunes from the 80s and really get into it. It really makes you feel happier. Especially if you have music on that you really love.

For the past few years I've had a very nasty habit of yo-yo exercising (exercising for a few days and then stopping for a while, start exercising again, stop, and vice versa) and started exercising diligently again a few weeks ago. Exercising is definitely good for you and you feel a difference when you do it again after so long but I personally don't feel any difference emotion-wise after exercising. All I feel is sweaty stickiness and fatigue.

I always feel really good right after I work out.
And If I do it regularly my overall mood and confidence goes up!

:D Plus, it makes you look better

Don't really do enough because of issues I have. But I find that for now, gentle exercise can be very therapeutic. I might go for walks in the woods with my dogs or go to a swimming pool

I did a lot of exercice regularly for many years and it never made me feel better at all.
Now I do nothing because the few I started to do it again, even trying for months, regularly, never made me feel any better.
I guess I don't even have the energy to do it.

But I know mine can be an isolated case. Afterall I'm a freak, for normal people it works.

Back in the day when I had time to do things I did exercise and it was greatly improving my life. I had an outlet for my frustrations and mentally I felt much more at ease. I even started sleeping better!

My mood improves right after but it is temporary. I want to exercise more regularly but it can be hard to find the motivation some days especially in winter.
