Why on earth would that matter?

I don't know - I personally LOVE Asian/African/ethinicities and all kinds of people, I HOPE it DOESN'T matter!! I've heard/read online that some people say in some areas in USA cops have been giving more hard time to people of other ethnicities... (??) (what with the anti-terror and 'gangs' etc - I hope she wasn't confused for a gang member or terrorist??)

I was just trying to figure out why they would be giving her a hard time, cause it doesn't seem logical (except if they were just afraid the city would stay without 400$?)

In Arizona, cops are allowed to pull over and/or ask for ID from anyone who looks Mexican.

The ID thing is complicated and annoyin. While its nto ILLEGAL in itself to NOT have ID, ive been told that if you dont have it when asked, they can automatically bump up your fine. Why? I have no idea.
This is really weird, though good to know I guess... I had no idea... maybe worth inquiring about more (to see if there's actually legislation for this, and if it's legal - sometimes a law and local regulations can actually be 'against each other' - that's more in an organisation's realm though probably..)

It's different for tourists, people travelling are kinda expected to have ID with I think, though even they can leave it in the car/at friend's house/hotel or it can get stolen etc. so huh?

Thank you for explaining and answering about the other things, again, I don't know much about Canada or how it's there, so it was interesting (and odd!!) to read about it. I thought Canada is pretty calm and all goes 'nicely' huh?

I've met some really nice cops too, and heard of some not-so-great, so I guess there are different kinds, like among all people...

Hope this all turns out well or at least no further hassle!!
(And your wife can be PROUD she scared 3 grown men!! :))

What about all the blond Mexicans or illegal Norweigan immigrants? yikes
Or Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Brazillian visitors/inhabitants - do they know that?

i'm not sure about Calgary, but in many large cities the mass transit systems have their own police force which is not part of the city police department - they only have jurisdiction on the transit system - they are generally less well-trained than the regular police, and generally looked down upon by the city cops - their whole job is catching vandals and ticket jumpers, so they take it very seriously

Calgary has city police that replaced the transit police, as the transit police werent taken very seriously at all. When i was in school they had guys not much older than me trying to police the train, and half the time they didnt know what authority they had so nothing really got done.

Enough people complained to city hall and they were replaced by regular cops.

Thus far, i have to admit from what ive read, the issues on the trains have dropped dramatically,

**** the police.. people should start cutting police budgets and get rid of em all.. we don't need them.. they don't prevent any crimes, they only react to it.. they violate peoples rights on a regular basis, and if we all universally stood up to them, they would become a thing of the past..

Sorry that your wife went through this, Lone Gunman it must've been traumatic for her. It could be many a SA sufferer's worse fear.

Police should have to treat people with some respect. Perhaps you could write a letter to your local member/politician complaining about the way she was treated?

yeah, we should probably get rid of the fire departments, too - firefighters don't prevent any fires, they just react to them

and get rid of the paramedics, too - they don't prevent any heart attacks, they only react to them

I actually did just that. I phoned the headquarters downtown and spoke to a PR officer. I explained what happened, and basically told them "look, this isnt about contesting whatever shes charged with, its specifically about the behavior and demeanor of 3 officers who essentially cornered my wife, half their size, and reemed her out for a very minor offense, and took it to the level that she felt like a total criminal. Your guys used alot of unnecessary sternness and intimidation. I know youve got a job to do, but keep your people in line. That was completely out of line and uncalled for. Because of their actions shes now having anxiety attacks whenever she sees a police officer".

That last part was the truth, we were at a red light in traffic today, and a cruiser stopped beside us. She saw the cop driving and turned to me closing her eyes and was trying to breathe slow. She started trembling and shaking, and started to hyperventillate. Luckily we were near where we needed to go and got into some fresh air. I think this event may be with her for a while.

To my suprise, the person i was speaking to sounded quite sincere and concerned, asked me who the officer who wrote the ticket was, and which train station this was at and what time of day. I explained everything to her and she said she would be forwarding this matter to their internal affairs.

Im not trying to be a sh*t disturber. I totally respect the law, i want to be its friend, but when people are scared of the police, instead of feeling comforted by them being around, i think theres a problem there.

I dont want to get this guy fired or anything, i just simply want him to be told his actions werent acceptable and cant happen again. The lady i spoke to said shed be getting back to be no later than 10 am tomorrow morning.

Should be interesting.

+10

When i have someone trying to bash down my door, i want someone to call. When i had to go to the hospital i sure was happy an ambulance was available.

Theres bad apples in every tree, but lets not chop down the whole orchard.

that's awesome - you did the right thing

police officers have a demanding job, but there's no reason anyone needs to be a jerk unnecessarily

it's unprofessional and creates a bad relationship with the public

after dealing with criminals, drug dealers, gang-bangers, and other ne'er-do-wells all the time, some cops forget that most people are generally decent

i hope your complaint gets the right attention so that these guys can get the proper attitude adjustment

You mean the bullies who met your wife right off the train are the guys who have all the guns?

Pretty much, yea.

You have to get 2 different permits just to own a hunting rifle here, if you want a handgun thats another ballgame al together.

Other things are easier, like pepperspray. I got my wife some pepperspray from the states, its 40% more potent than what you can get here. Thats about as lethal as your allowed to carry, lol.

Sounds like a bad deal.

Because they're douchebags.

So, basically they get that mall-cop-on-a-power-trip attitude, right? Sounds just like the conservation officers that patrol provincial parks here. Idiots. Not cops. Just think they can push everybody around. My brother almost got fined for picking up a crayfish out of the water. Seriously, the biatch had nothing better to do. She tried to give him this whole illegal to possess crayfish crap, which is true, but all he did was pick it up out of the water. He had no intentions of taking it anywhere. He told her he's an avid fisherman and asked if she'd act that way if it was a kid. Put her in her place. He had another run in with the morons when they were looking to stir up sh*t. Long weekend in May, you can't have booze in the campgrounds. He went out to our trailer with a friend and they went fishing for the day. Came back to the campground and the losers stopped and tore apart the vehicle. Asked them where came from. Fishing. Where's your boat? At the marina. Do you have dock space? Yeah. Where's your trailer. In the seasonal. Didn't find any booze. I bet that would have made their day. A couple of young guys in a truck. They must have done something wrong. I've heard of these guys quietly sneaking up on people sitting at their campfires doing nothing wrong and then turning on their flashlights and freaking them out. That's just creepy and uncalled for. Oh, no rowdy campers to throw out? Hey, let's give people a hard time for just talking. Bullies. All they are. Losers with low self esteem who have to go on a power trip and pick on everybody else for an ego boost. Makes me sick.

Personally, I'd rather have a gun.

Why I'm glad I live in Canada.
