Why do people hate me for my music choice?

I used to be really attached to listening to 70's 80's 90's music such as COld Play, Green Day, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Beatles, Rolling Stone, James Brown, Michael Jackson, Talking Heads, ect. However, maybe a year or 2 ago I suddenly discovered this orchestral fantasy band called Two Steps From Hell which probably some people are familiar with maybe not. But I liked to listen to the chorus and the beauty of their orchestral songs. And then I became even more obsessed with listening to other fantasy orchestral bands like Audio Machine, Position Music, Future World, Sonic Librarian, ect. Thanks To TSFH. I don't know why, I think I'd like(and this is just my preference) I think I like listening to them more than regular music. But most people can't accept my taste in music. One person said Don't you like music with actual words in them. I said what's wrong with liking different bands. He went nothing but I guess he thought it was weird because he was into stuff like One direction, Linkin park, ect. Not the least surprised by his comment but everyone just has to mock my taste in music just because my music tastes don't meet up to theirs. Funny, I guess everyone I encountered who I told I said I liked the beauty of the music in those bands had all listening to modern music today.

way i see it is you have an open mind when it comes to music which is great thing.
i often get mocked over my music as i like so many genres varrying from people like skrillex, linkin park, tupac, jack johnson and even johnny cash
most people mock other peoples tastes in certain things like music and even films or clothes. is because there sucked into the media frenzy of crap and only like what is currently "in".

hell i love pokemon still and have since it began in 96/97 and i get mocked for liking it and its always the same thing "pokemon is so old your sad for liking it" which just proves they follow the media frenzy instead of following there hearts for what they really enjoy.

when it comes to people like that it is best to just ignore them, if you try to state your opinion it will only cause an arguement

I think it's great that you like music without words. I get bored when I listen to music like that, so I find it amazing how some people are able to enjoy this kind of music. I don't judge or hate people for their music tastes. I also don't like listening to some mainstream music. Just do what feels right for you.

Because the people around you don't have the same music taste as you, for them anything that is different from what is supposed to be normal music, is weird. I like metal and most people around me don't, and they instantly label my music as bad/evil. Very few people around here where I live have the same taste in music as I do so I get the feeling too. I sometimes listen to music without words too, some movies have amazing soundtracks I like to listen to.

You can't let other people's opinions get to you on this. It's a completely subjective matter. For instance, the way I see it and judging by the bands you named, the guy likes really, really bad music. Should I judge him for that? No. Of course not.

What you should do is listen to whatever you like. If what you like is not mainstream "crap" that plays on the radio these days, even better! That's one more reason to feel good about yourself.

I also listen to a lot of stuff without vocals, including post-rock, neoclassical, ambient, video-game/movie soundtracks and I feel damn great about it.Heck, I also listen to stuff with some extreme vocals like Black, Death or Doom metal, and even though most people I know doesn't enjoy that kind of stuff, I still feel pretty darn good about it.

The tl;dr; version is: listen to whatever you like and if someone judges you by that, just ignore the retard.

edit:

Lucidiotic You seem to have a great musical taste.

i've never heard of post rock or post metal. not any kinds of post genres. hmm...

You're missing on some pretty amazing music.

He was in to One Direction? they are a bubblegum pop boy band. You should ask him if he got the dolls to play with. He shouldnt be making fun of you, I think you should making fun of him. No one should even dare mock your taste on the Rolling Stones and the Beates. How about this, they didnt use autotune. One Direction is also nothing to brag about, neither is Justin Beiber. He may be okay but his popularity is blown out of proportion. For instance, I love superstar Avril Lavigne, some called her power pop. She doesn't use autotune and doesn't need to. I like Selena Gomez but i dont know, she may use it. I also like Christina Aguilera. Its great to have variety. I grew up with and still listen to the bands of the 70s and the 80s such as Pink Floyd, the Who, Kiss, the CARS, some called the CARS Power pop, others called the CARS guitar rock. I love Motley Crue and Guns N Roses. I absolutely love 80s metal , some call it sleaze rock. I like some 90s and I also like doo wop rock, and the 50s and 60s, such as the Doors. the truth of the matter is, noone used auto tune then, it was more the music and not the look. And as for Avril she actually has talent beyond imagination, the girl can play 3 instruments and she writes her own songs. if someone tells you somethings out dated tell them at least they didnt use autotune in the 70s and 80s

Mocking people's tastes in music is idiotic.
Sure is.

i've never heard of post rock or post metal. not any kinds of post genres. hmm...
Post-metal can be good. Not all of it but I do like some bands.

He shouldnt be making fun of you, I think you should making fun of him.
I disagree. Nobody should be making fun of anyone. Whether you're into One Direction or Cephalotripsy, you like what you like and it's not good to be ridiculing anyone.

I think it's dumb to dislike someone for their music taste. Maybe other people think you're listening to be a contrarian.

hey thats not good people judge you for that, it just means you have a better appreciation for music and thats a good thing. if you like music to like it, then you cant help it, if you like it cause its the 'in' thing or its 'cool' then thats fake. but if you genuinely like the music, then like it, i geuss what im getting at is with these things you have to not care what they think. i mean ill be honest i love Ellie Goulding, shes my favorite musician of all time!!! i love her soooo much, i wish i could meet her in person and i wish so bad that she could just be a close friend. thats what i really, really want, either to be married to her or just have her as a close friend and we can just talk to each other and hang out and stuff. i get judged for that all the time and even friends (the few that i have) will laugh at me and make fun of me but i dont care i just like her too much. i dont let that get to me and i just keep liking her. remember music is meant to be enjoyed and listened to, not disregarded and judged for your personal preference. anyways i hope this helps you and God Bless :)

One person said Don't you like music with actual words in them.

Personally, I consider it to be "music" if it's instrumental and a song if it has vocals... Not to say that songs aren't music, but I wouldn't consider someone singing a Capella to be music, that would just be "singing"... Yeah... I'm going way off topic here....

On a serious note however, Two Steps From Hell and the like are excellent! The music is so epic and inspiring. Anyone who criticises you for liking something which has much more talent in it than more chart-esque songs/music clearly has very little in their lives and you should not take their opinion to heart. Personally, I find the vast majority of music that other people like to be utter tripe, but I don't go around complaining to people about their taste, I just play my music and think how lucky I am to have so much which I find inspiring and amazing.

I don't think that any intelligent person would hate someone else solely for their taste of music. Of course, if you like to be at home in the punk scene, and you'd only listen to german folk music, then it wouldn't be surprising to be the target of some jokes.

As far as I'm aware, we all like things. We might stick to the same things and never change culture or shift paradigm, and keep moving along.

Music's a great way to see as static or fluxing preferences - this goes for... employment, home situation, social involvement... anything else?

I've changed gradually by situation, era and taste. I try to keep everything open.
I do dislike people who, when asked what they like, such as music, or food:
I eat or listen to everything. (100% veg / meat or all music)

I am good at stating my preferences and how they've changes. And once again, however I express myself, which might include a long-gone history, more recent, or thoughts for the future. Saying any of this can go badly with anyone.

I like to suggest different activities... what is there to say? I adore hearing anything new from anyone - it's always gone well. People have a particular tolerance / acceptance level.

I don't turn away from anyone.

When I suggest:
different food, try this music, holiday destination, cold or hot,
or try this different naming convention in programming syntax... in an office etc
Everyone turns off as I try to get them to listen and take me seriously. and I feel the rejection. I'm the OPPOSITE of that. Whew! :eek:mg: This describes my life in a nutshell. I listen.

I have a big music collection. It has a fair divide, not quite exactly 50:50 between vocal and non-vocal to 'fit others', which is described very well by Lucidiotic

My main job has been about categorisation throughout any logical structure, with a root node start, which spreads to all my personal thoughts to decisions and outcome.

Ummm... this is why I go on much tooo more about everything... in my mind

Even if someone liked One Direction, Justin Bieber or freaking Nikki Minaj, I wouldn't hate them or make fun of them for it (ok, maybe One Direction, lol). Personally I think your taste in music is great, I also like to listen to orchestras/instrumentals from time to time and I have a huge weakness for Latin Hymns even though I am not Catholic.
