What irks you?

I get really irked by people who think that "society" is bad, or that people in general are evil or mean or unfair, or who try to segregate themselves from the world by calling everyone else "drones" or "sheeple" or saying that people in general lack common sense or are stupid. None of these things are true, and it's a toxic way of thinking about the world to which you belong. It makes you look like a very miserable person indeed.

I would agree that trying to excuse yourself from things that you are participating in is hypocritical, but sometimes these things are very much true and that doesn't change just because other people don't want to hear it.

If you're going to go all relative on me then you can justify pretty much anything, can't you?

I'm gonna lean more towards the 'stupid evil sheeple' side, based on the fact that we're currently causing the middle of the biggest and fastest mass extinction event in the history of the planet, and nobody really cares about it... or else they do the barest minimum, about as much as they can before reading the point of actual discomfort or real sacrifice.

I guess sometimes we're nice to each other, but in the long run, I still think we're doing a lot more harm than good... and by that I mean a ridiculously disproportionate amount of harm. And it's also pretty much impossible to undo it at this point... and it's only going to get worse because no one is prepared to give up what they need to give up in order to turn it around.

I'm not excluding myself here because that would be hypocritical, but given what we know about what we're doing, I don't think anyone should really be feeling all that great about themselves... because if they do feel good about themselves, they're more likely to be making things worse.

What irks me the most is when people hide behind the use of sarcasm to try to put others down or make themselves look/feel smarter at the expense of someone else. Where I live, there are a lot of people who just look for reasons to try to say other people are less intelligent than them. I live on an island and I think many here have a deep down inferiority complex because they think people from other areas of the world see them as unsophisticated. They overcompensate for this by trying to act self important. It's a beautiful place and most of the people are really great. It's just the groups of over-compensation artists that sometimes makes it suck.

- People who are overly attached to their smartphones.
- The way how Facebook has become almost a necessity to keep in touch with people.
- Over use of the terms 'homophobe' and 'racist'.
- (badly raised) Dogs.
- People who look down upon jobs they deem low level. Dunno but I only visit the doctor about once every five years or so, but my bins get emptied every Friday. I'm greatly dependent on the waste collectors. Every job in society has a purpose and makes the world go round, no need to put each other down.
- People who judge a book by its cover.
- Modern feminism. AKA whiners whining about relatively unimportant things like the 'lack of powerful female lead characters in the gaming industry'. (Seriously get a perspective. Please move your @ss to India or Egypt, you know, to places where women are actually still being suppressed by men.)
- Islam. Call me an islamophobe (lol) all you want but nothing that comes out of that religion is any good. It's a women suppressing, human rights violating, sick and twisted culture. As an atheist I don't like any religion for that matter, but Islam desperately needs to modernize.
- Decision by the government to keep continue investing in military and art rather than spend some extra $ in health care and education. Priorities I ask you?

I'm not trying to start an argument, but I think you're generalizing, and I'm irked by people who do that. While it's true that most Islamic countries are very undemocratic and suppressing, and that we daily hear about yet another terrorist attack by Islamic groupings, many (probably most) Muslims are regular people and don't follow every word in the Quran. Many Muslims drink alcohol, eat pork, don't wear burqa, and want democracy and Western values. I agree, however, that Islam must be modernized and have a reformation.

Selective quoting. Hate it when the key points of my post get ignored. Someone comes up and picks out one sentence, takes it completely out of context, and chooses to reply to THAT instead of all the other relevant content I posed.

Come on I'm not even a native speaker, it takes me a lot of time to compose a somewhat readable reply that adequately reflects my thoughts on the matter. Then x comes along, cherrypicks some loose words and instead of having a meaningful, mature discussion replies with bullsshh- that's completely unrelated to anything I ever said. It's the equivalent of talking to a brick wall.

You're 100% right they're not all the same. It's just that where I live there are so very FEW 'modern' Muslims that it's often very hard for me not to generalize. In comparison to most other religions there is something inherently medieval to Islam.

I think Iran is a good example of a place where Islam encompasses both liberals and traditionalists: the population there is actually quite pro 21st century. Because of the wars, it's also a very young population. You could see the revolts of some of the things going on, there seem to be quite a few Muslims stimulating advancement and change.

I often wonder if the problem is Islam itself or the existence of Islamic states... any state that is dominated by religious ideas seems like an extremely bad idea to me.

And fundamentalism is a disease.
