What if a stranger insults you?

This has happened to me plenty of times. I heard guys drive past me and call me horrible names as they were driving past me and one threw a beer can out of their window at me. Good thing it didn't hit me, cause I would have reported it. It makes me feel horrible whenever this happens. People can be horrible sometimes. In the end I just think to myself; "These people are messed up to want to do this to someone." I'm glad I'm not like them, I'd never go out of my way to insult someone. Sometimes I think that I have a target symbol on my forehead that says: hurt me, I'm weak.

I think I have a something like this happen to me today. I was at a Toastmasters meeting and heard someone laughing very loudly behind my back. I thought I heard someone call my name, but I was busy networking/talking to some people and did not notice. It was when I got home and went to the shower when I took off my pants and found a single piece of thread at the back of the butt part! :eek:mg: Suddenly, everything clicked and a lightbulb went off my head. No wonder those guys were laughing! And I thought it was just my imagination! But then, I also remembered this other guy who shared his experience of discovering 2 holes in his pants when driving towards the meeting. Suddenly, it doesn't feel so embarassing anymore. I make mistakes, I'm only human anyway. But I wonder why nobody approached me and told me about the thread on my buttcheek!

If some guy told you about it what would automatically come to your mind? ... "Why are you looking"? Possibly? Most guys probably wouldn't want you to think they're checking you out.

Hasn't happened to me for a while, but generally I'd just ignore them, then obsess about it non-stop for days/weeks on end and feel like shit.

To be honest I still think about some of the insults years later.

You want to know how I got these scars?
Generally, because I'm 6ft 1, have a few visible tattoos and am physically fit, guys don't openly disrespect me in the way you described.

For me it has happened more in the past when I have to deal with people in a business sense, like buying something, asking a shop attendant for advice etc. It's like they know they are relatively safe in the structured environment of a business premises, so they think that allows them to act like an a s s h o l e.

My response?
I get pretty mad, but although I feel like I could choke the living s h i t out of them, I know I can't do that, so I belittle them outright.
Scenario; Buying a laptop.

me- 'hi, can you tell me about this laptop, the features, brand etc'

them - talks/acts rudely, etc 'yea its good'.

me - looks at them with open contempt - awkward silence (for them)'what experience do you have in computing'

them - oh er, I have a similar laptop at home..its pretty good..i have no troubles with it..er...'

me -(in an obviously heated and forceful tone) 'that's all? so your experience is standing in a shop all day acting like a cowardly p r i c k that's nothing but rude to customers? That's it?? Go get the store manager, I want a word with him about your conduct, and I want to speak to someone who actually knows what they're talking about'.

I have to point out that I'm always friendly to shop staff at first. I never treat them with disrespect first (I've worked in a representative role before, the general public can be a nightmare to deal with).

I'm sorry for you... It has happened to me a couple of times too. I pretended I wasn't listening and kept walking, but eventually I started crying :sad:
I'm always too serious and people mistake it by anger or arrogance.

It happens to me fairly regularly, almost always young males. Either shouting at me from their car, or throwing a drink at me (which happened a few days ago), once I had a really smug looking guy walk right up to me and scream "fat ****" right in my face then swagger off laughing with his friends.

I am obese so I guess it makes me seem like a good target, Im also relatively tall and broad so I have a large presence unfortunately. Most people are wary of me because of my large presence, but I seem to be a target for abuse, especially from young males.

What a bunch of idiots. I've seen a pic of you and you didn't look obese to me and so what if you were? Its none of their damn business! You don't need their approval to enjoy life! Next one comes up and pulls a stunt like that I say kick em right in the gonads. Once again reaffirms a reason why I hate people.

My height helps it not look as bad as it is, but in actually I am considered morbidly obese, my weight is around 125kgs (mind you I stopped weighing myself a while ago so it is probably closer to 130kgs right now), my height though is 5'8'' so that helps. I struggle to lose weight because I have PCOS, yet I can put it on ridiculously easily.

My reaction varies on how anxious I am that day and how angry I get in response, sometimes I just freeze up and go all rigid until they leave, sometimes I'm able to swear back at them, sometimes they are just gone before I can even process what happened.

Things like this make me wish I could walk down the street with several of y'all on the forum. I wouldn't say a word to them, just punch 'em in the jaw and keep walkin. They might get up and beat my *** but if they're weak enough to insult random people that ain't botherin them then I highly doubt it. What could they possibly get out of doing that to people?

I've been insulted by strangers so many times I've lost count.

My advice is pretty simple.....stop caring what others think of you. Most people who talk trash who are strangers are people you'll never see again anyway.

People tend to not like someone who isn't normal. I could go on about this.

Another thing that helps is keep going places where people are. It's called desensitization. The more you hear people talk about you, the less you'll care.

Something you should develop is confidence in yourself, in your mind. Always know that you know who you are. I've had strangers try to convince me I'm dumb or a loser many times. If you know in your mind that they don't know the whole story, you'll be better off.

He probably only said it because he was with his friends! There are people who are just stupid, cruel, and weird but if you get them in a pack, watch out! Again I'd just try and brush it off as ignorant pack mentality! They say things when their friends are around that they wouldn't normally say by themselves! Your response to almost having a panic attack would be mine as well. Except I would be thinking of all the really cool comebacks that I could say! Sadly I wouldn't say them as I have a problem with confrontation. Still, I've come to realize that life will throw idiots in your path at the worst times! They pop up like those Wack-a-Moles and they go away just as fast!

Well yes there an incident a couple years ago where a group (big group of guys 18-21y/o hang out by the takeaway in groups of 10-20) they shouted abuse after me tellin me to go buy myself an arsE. I dealt with it by turning around and walking right up to them confronting them. Can't let them away with it or the next time they'll rob your phone or your bag, chancers.

wow. That is horrifying. It speaks so much of their own insecurity. They need a slap for that, that is not acceptable. I'm so sorry you've experienced this.:sad:
