"it should be the way i want it to be, instead of the way it really is"

how does this line of thinking solve anything?

your thoughts?

Doesn't solve anything because you can't control everything, there are too many factors that i'll do whatever they want with you while you stand there complaining. The truth is life doesn't owe us anything yet we think it does.

I guess it's better then saying, the world sucks there is nothing I can do about it.
Even if there is nothing you can do about it, optimism is better then pessimism (yes, I know I'm a hypocrite).
It doesn't really solve much.

But thinking it should be 'your' way is arrogant.
Thinking it should be better, not so horrible.

Those are just my thoughts.

I think the world could be alot better, but not per se the way i want it to be.

I try to live every day, as if the world were as it should be, to show it what it can be.

Confused yet?

My thoughts: it made me chuckle bc I know so many young people like this. It is literally impossible to help them understand they cant make the world bend to fit their liking they can only bend themselves to make their life better.

It makes a swell excuse for why things don't go our way. It's not me, it's the messed up world I live in. And since I can't change the world, all hope is lost. If only there was something else I could do.

haha~ I feel like I said this earlier...

I guess I just like to think that you can be however you want to be in your own world; and although what you do may not be considered practical to anyone 'in the real world' - you shouldn't have to give up what you like just to get by- just to be seen as 'normal'.

As for expecting everything else to change based on what you think it should do-- perhaps a bit deluded and silly. Not necessarily arrogant... probably.
Won't solve many problems if you expect things that you cannot control to change to fit your needs.

That line of thinking can drive you into a pit of despair and frustration....been there many times myself...probably will again too... it can be a motivating force to push you to get what you want, its only a problem when what you want is impossible to attain yet the desire is still there.

*I wish I was better looking, taller and had the body of an athlete

I also feel that being idealist can be productive. If everyone was complacent with how things are...nothing would change...ever...not for the better, or for the worst. Being unsatisfied/discontent etc motivates us to improve our situation.

*I wish I could go back in time and change things in my past

Taking it to a broad level... I think this line of thought has influenced just about every aspect of our current reality, starting with when we had evolved to becoming consciously aware of ourselves or "cognito ergo sum." I view the world that we live in as a dangerous, dynamic "tug-and-pull" between collective groups of people with enough power to exert what they think our world should be, of what it should value, what it should exclude, how our society should be structured, and how normality should be defined. People may say that there is nothing an individual can do to influence reality, but depending on the support one could rally, our reality is very much influenced by groups of people in positions of power who may or may not share the same ideas that you do on an individual level. Issues can be either solved or exacerbated depending on what ideas, values, and opinions those groups of people hold.

If you didn't have people who thought this way... you wouldn't be driving in your car, or sipping on your coffee, or crucifying your Jesus.

I'm sure someone who opposed slavery back in the day appeared arrogant... very arrogant indeed.

All of these people had a vision to make the world better, or as they see it.

Well, my thoughts are that we should strive to make our own small worlds how we would like them to be, rather than try to change the whole world to suit ourselves; one size wont fit all, so consensus on what is 'right' will never happen

I like to create world within worlds, my little escapes. I get lost in them. The world of the race, the world of wildflowers. The world is an amazing place, and I am lucky to be part of it.

I like your idea though "The Man" will never let that happen. They have to interfere with every decision you make just so they can stay in power.::p:

Yes, I like that feeling of being lost in a little world too :)

Someone opposed to slavery was trying to make the world better for everyone, not just themselves...

I guess i took the phrase to mean something a little more petulant and selfish. When someone sets out to turn an idealistic thought into action...they aren't thinking, "the world should be how i want it to be." they're likely thinking, "the world can be a better place and I think i have some ideas on how to make it a little better for my fellow man."

"The world should be how i want it to be." = selfish
"I think the world could be made better and I'm going to invent a car, abolish slavery, turn these beans into a delicious drink called coffee..." = ideas to help society and culture evolve...not selfish...

Another way i look at is like this.

I have many, MANY things i would change if i could. Thats the key right there, IF i could. But i cant. Oh sure, i can get inolved with groups lobbying for change, i believe if enough people get together anything can happen.

Basically, as much as i would like thigns to be different, i control the things i can control, mainly the way i react to things and think about things. My reaction in turn changes the outcome of things, sometimes away from what id expect. So in a way im changing things myself.

Weird illness that we have, as it makes us think that's more reasonable to expect the whole world to change to please us than to change ourserlves so that we can be a part of it.

I think people should be different, but that won't happen.

People are people, and we sin and **** **** up.

Maybe we can raise the next generations better, but I think we are raising them worse.
I say we, because kids learn from everybody, not just their parents.
