I searched this after having mine removed.
The appendix produces enzymes which destroy intestinal bacteria. Appendisitis occurs when faeces blocks the opening to the appendix. Due to this blockage the enzymes that the appendix produces become trapped inside and multiply exponentially. Due to this multiplication the enzymes produce a chemical which causes the appendix to expand.
Those who have had their appendix removed are more prone to early onset of Crones disease.
The reason we don't need it is due to advances in modern medacines to aleviate intestinal problems.

But in all seriousness, I do have a question that deals more with human psychology (more mind-boggling than astrophysics).
Why is it, when I look at a set of evidence for something, I can see one thing (the truth) but someone else can see something entirely different? A lot of spiritual questions, or questions that deal with belief versus skepticism, it's like we're both looking at a blue sky and I say "The sky is definitely blue" and the guy next to me says "The sky is red, how come you can't see that???? Is your mind so narrow?" that sort of thing.

Earth isn't our permanent home. I'm almost positive, by 2200, we will have colonize another planet successfully, probably Mars. And since the sun will probably supernova in about a million years, humans will have long since evacuated this little solar system by then. That is, if we don't utterly destroy ourselves first.
