Could you be friends with someone that is completey different from yourself who you have nothing in common with, someone with different opinions or political views?

Yes... my best friend was a conservative republican. Polar opposite views on politics, religion, social issues...

Best intellectual conversations... but we respected eachothers viewpoints.

One of my online friends is 10 years my senior and my political opposite. I think people definitely grow from being exposed to different ideas and taking them seriously.

Yes that's possible. Even if we don't become friends it doesn't mean we become automatic enemies. I try to respect everyone no matter how different.

I would like to believe so, but the reality is that most probably we´d end up in arguments. We´d both have to be very mature to bridge it.

I guess it depends on how extreme their differences are and how outspoken and respectful they are about them. In the worst of worst scenarios I can think of.. no, I can't see myself being their friend.
