.

Wooohoo go you :D

Yesterday was:
40 mins treadmill, 20 min on spinbike, weights, crunches and etc.
The gym was really busy yesterday (I chose a bad time I think) and it really freaked me out... especially because that was only the second time I'd been in there.

Today was:
40 min. treadmill. (in my garage, no gym today)

What exactly is the shin injury James? Is it shin splints or something else. I supplement some of my land running miles with pool jogging, your get a good workout without the impact.

What sucks is I've done a bunch of research on it and have come to the conclusion that I tore a muscle in the shin area and it had to have been a grade 3 tear, the worst kind. What scares me is that it's been almost 2 years now since i originally tore the muscle and it still hurts after stretching and running. Something else that is really bad is my calf muscle flares up really bad during running too and is sore for most of the rest of the day.

What surface i run on is meaningless now because of how bad the tear is. I've tried running on sand and it's just as bad.

What I should have done 2 years ago is went to see a doctor that specializes in muscles, because i did visit a family physician doctor and left shocked when he claimed my shin would be better after 1 month....that doctor told me that about a year ago, so he was obviously wrong considering i can't make it more than 2 miles w/out extreme pain. The problem now is I'm practically broke and seeing a muscle doctor would run me at least $100, probably more, and I'm nowhere near being able to afford that being unemployed. So I've tried just resting for over a month, which did absolutely nothing. I'm left with one option, painful rehabilitation. Stretching and running is painful, but if there is a way to heal this, that would be the only way. The last hope will be surgery if this doesn't work out. That will be years away if that ever happens with my financial situation, i really hope i don't have to get surgery. But 2 years of this pain is insane, and I'm definitely concerned. If only professional medical attention wasn't so expensive. the internet only got me so far. The internet can't exactly look at my leg and give me an mri.

Oh and I've had shin splints b4, and they were nothing like this. When I've had shin splints they went away after a month, and this injury i have now has been going on for almost 2 years now. It's a full tear to the muscle around the tibia area. My left shin feels weak, dead, and painful.

Thanks for the support =)
I get how the gym can have a stress factor. It has the same effect on me sometimes when it's busy. But I think that happens to a lot of people. I just can't wait for the weather to get better where I live so I can start running on the bike trail. It's a lot less claustrophobic and a lot more freeing ^_^

James, a sports doctor or physiotherapist/podiatrist might be able to provide advice? I don't bother with family physicians either. It can save a lot of money if find a good sports doctor. the one I saw for my knee I only saw twice. Be a good idea to explore all non surgery options first. Even a sports massage might help.

I definitely prefer running/cardio outside. Weather keeps in the gym.

I workout and need gym for that. Went today, 40 mins treadmill, and worked arms and back and abs in gym. Not great, was tired from long day yesterday, bad eating and went bed late. BUT - I made it to gym easily could have blown it off.

Saturday 26th February

Type: Outdoor Ride (Morning)
Distance: 87.61 km
Time: 03:01:04
Speed: 29.0 km/h

Couldn't get much sleep last night due to weather, felt crap in the morning at 5:00am and didn't feel like going out, especially a 3 hour ride but forced myself out and took it easy. Started to feel better after 45 minutes.

I did some beast stretching today, must have been about 5 minutes worth, all focused on stretching my left shin. The roads are half ice and half snow today here in Kansas, so I'm going to wait until it's safe to run again. Even the dirt trail is iced up.

Kiwong, i appreciate your advice about a podiatrist, but right now, I can't afford one. If I can't heal my shin by doing workouts and stretching, then that will mean i need surgery anyway, which i also can't afford. I have no choice right now but to rely on myself. I remember spraining my ankle, and was able to fix it over a month or a month and a half by running and walking on it a lot. I'm going to treat this the same way and hope it works out. Something i didn't mention is all winter I was sitting on my butt and not doing any kind of running, so I know rest isn't the answer.

There is no question this is worse than my sprained ankle being a year and a half-long injury so far. I've got to keep believing I can fix it though, all i have is hope right now.

James, I saved a fortune by seeing someone who knew what they were talking about. I saved myself from unecessary surgery and a possible knee replacement. Now I am running half marathons, whereas prior to June 2008, I hadn't been able to run for twenty years. I saw the physio three times, the doctor twice and the podiatrist once. All the physio I did on my own, it took me three years to rehab my knee muscles, but it helped to being doing effective exercises. I agree with the use it or lose motto, but I needed to fix my biomechanics first.

How often are you supposed to do rehabilitation and for how long every day are you supposed to do it? I'm thinking maybe I haven't been doing enough?

JamesSmith, have you tried Self Myofascial Release (SMR) exercises using a foam roller? Get rid of tightness and knots in your legs, calves, shins, hamstrings, abductors, glutes etc? Foam rollers are fairly cheap and has been invaluable. Got me back to running.

2mile run
15min bike
15min elliptical
arms&abs

Someone I went to high school with saw me at the gym and told me how good I looked after loosing so much weight today :)
As happy as I was, it was still kinda awkward. I think my next goal is an SA task. I need to work on not leaving the gym early if it's too busy or if I know someone. I mean, he really was nice about (and pretty hot too lol) so there's no reason why I couldn't have stayed.

task#2 I'm buying new gym cloths. The middle school leftover sweats aren't very good confidence builders lol
