are you offended by profanity?

It doesn't bother me. My vocabulary really isn't that good and I feel the urge to utter swear words every now and then. :)

I am a sensitive person so I can be bothered by profanity. When people curse at me, I tend to take it way too seriously and I still remember years later. I'm not comfortable around people who curse at others behind their backs, you know backstabbing.

Profanity doesn't offend me at all, probably because I'm always surrounded by people who swear all the time. It's actually really common where I live. I know that in some other areas it's taken a lot more seriously than here. I mean, it's not totally uncommon to hear a teacher swear in class, though they do try to minimize it.

However, I do personally try to swear as little as possible. I just find it sort of unpleasant and I have found myself using them way too much for my liking in the past. I mean, there are so many beautiful words out there, why fill your sentences with swears haha. ^^

Fair question

I appreciate some dirty words. It's a way to express yourself. All the 4-letter words.

I'd rather do it by saying it with speech than waving my arms around. Although banging my fist on a table would have more meaning. You could swear quietly, instead to shouting / screaming. Make it subtle. As making the words bold

I'd say that a conversation is sometimes just only the profane 4-letter words if someone is angry and wants to make a point. Not just good. Maybe it's f*c*i*g good. To highlight

I find it very annoying when people say F**k or S**t a thousand times. To me it sounds ignorant and rude. There are so many other words.

They don't bother me in the slightest. I don't understand why it can be such a big deal, considering they are just words. It's rare when I hear somebody using a swear word in an assaulting manner.

The purpose of profanity is to express strong emotion. It should be used sparingly, like a spice, lest it become monotonous and lose its flavor and impact. As one who enjoys putting words together, I'm bothered by people whose conversation is little more than one long stream of obscenities. If all you're going to taste is pepper, why bother putting anything else in the stew?

However, I'm equally offended by prudish types who take offense at the slightest curse and attempt to censor others. If all you want on your plate is a colorless, flavorless gruel, that's your affair, but don't you dare try to dictate my verbal cuisine. Excessive use of profanity may indicate a lack of imagination and an undernourished vocabulary, as has been said, but sometimes f*** is the appropriate word.

I am not offended by profanity. What offends me is the three or so guys that I work with that always refer to any woman whatsoever as b******. It's like its the only word they know when talking about women. Any woman. It drives me crazy though I haven't said anything to them. All of these guys are older than me so you'd think they would know better.

I don't find profanity offensive as such, but I don't like to hear people swear in public when they're total strangers, and it offends me greatly when children swear. I use curse words, but only with people I know, I'd never use them without knowing someone. I also don't think they should be the greatest components of a person's vocabulary.

I think profanity can have an impact sometimes where other words fail. I love pretty much all words in the English language, though weirdly there are a few non-swears that I can't actually say, or even type just because they feel icky. But yeah, I don't find profanity offensive.. even Stephen Fry defends the use of the F word.

It depends how it is said and in what context. If someone just uses it in regular conversation casually and doesn't really treat it like any other word it doesn't really bother me, like when I don't really notice it.

But when the swears stick out and it is the speakers intention to emphasis the swear then it sort of puts me off, if you want to swear that's fine but if you do it obnoxiously it is, well, obnoxious.

I'm never offended, but it can get uncomfortable or annoying depending on how the person is using the word(s). I swear a lot when I'm thinking or talking to myself, and quite often around peers if I'm comfortable with them and know they won't mind. Profanity is hilarious more often than not, I think, and is also good for relieving stress.

Nah, doesn't bother me at all. I can curse like a sailor myself! The only exception is what JuiceB brought up about men referring to women as bitches (or ho's). That I don't like!
