To the point: does hearing people shout at others irritate or frighten you? Do you want to ever say something but are afraid to because you know that person will just yell back? I know we all yell and get annoyed at times, but I mean when you hear others just scream because they can throw their authority around - that's when it gets maddening (at least for me)
For me, this discussion is a bit personal, but since I am at the house most of the time, I hear how my brother and sister-in-law talk to their 3 year old son - my nephew- and sometimes I feel so sad for the child. I understand it's none of my business how they raise their child (unless there is actual child abuse) but just how they talk to him is rude. My brother has always had anger issues - no surprise since he is a police officer - but to yell at your kid to go to bed and stay there when they've had no trouble getting him in bed in the first place is ridiculous and I am sick and tired of hearing him yell at the boy for nothing - other than the fact that my brother is 'annoyed' because they have to spend the weekend with their child. Monday-Friday, for 10-12 hours I am with my nephew and for the mere 48 hours they have to spend with him, they seem put out. My sister-in-law just sits there & lectures the boy "put your toys away" "you know where it goes, now do it" "focus - are you even listening to me"...etc.
And yes, I think it's great for kids to pick up their mess but she takes it a step further by ignoring my brother when he asks her a question, and instead keeps lecturing my nephew to put the toys away. I don't know, maybe I am just being extra-sensitive right now but my heart breaks for my nephew because I know there's nothing I can do about it.
