Away from religion Do you think that God can talk to you (literally)?

Literally? Like me talking to you, no.

I think at best, if God does talk, it's through supplanting intuition into people's minds. But of course, that's the argument. Is intuition some metaphysical language, some completely explainable scientific phenomena, or just a lucky guess. Unfortunately, we may never know for sure. But that won't stop people from debating, lol.

"God once spoke to me and told me I was mad, and I believed him."

"If you talk to God, it's prayer. If God talks to you, it's schizophrenia."

There is no answer. There is only belief.

And don't let anyone tell you that beliefs are irrelevant. Beliefs are powerful. Just look at this forum. It is predicated on removing the negative beliefs that we all share about ourselves. Many of us are aware that our unworthiness is not necessarily "fact", but that doesn't stop us from asserting it like it is fact. Saying this though, it is also not necessarily "fact' that we are valuable humans who deserve happiness either.

But rather than escape from this paradigm and admit that belief is based on the eye of the beholder, we treat our lives like scientific experiments and make the wild-assertion that self-worth is somehow objective. And like scientists, we are pragmatists that when given two choices, decide to err on the side that involves as little assumptions possible. Negativity is this premise we fall back on, because to assume that everyone hates us and doesn't notice us seems to be a more neutral position than thinking we are worthy enough to be well-regarded in the imaginations of others.

There is one song quote that basically sums up how I feel about this topic:

"Whether or not there is any type of god, I'm not supposed to say. And today I don't really care. God is a word and the argument ends there."

It is so easy to believe in a god of some kind. It's not some mystery why people have these beliefs. Everyone wants to feel important and like there's some higher purpose or that they have some purpose in life. It's like being in on some secret alliance - you and your god. It's nice to shift responsibilities to "someone" else and put it in their great and glorious "hands." These mystical beliefs are created by us to compensate for feelings of confusion and being overwhelmed. It's essentially a coping mechanism.

If you're talking about the Christian God, then no...all the talking is done through the Holy Spirit guiding you as you read Scripture.

I don't think the human race would enjoy a vocal relationship with a cosmic being. Most people don't even like having a preacher tell them what to do, but at least you can tell them to get bent. I don't think that would go over too well with someone with unlimited power. So yeah, if there is a God I'm grateful he doesn't get involved in mans personal lives.

No, of course not. And there is no god.

Saying there is no God is your opinion but you shouldn't state it as fact, you'll offend someone.

I can't say for certain that God can actually speak to you. I know it hasn't happened to me and in my opinion it would be a no but it's merely how much faith people put into it, I think. I mean, example wise, people can actually make themselves sick and physically ill if they wanted to. I think if someone felt they wanted the Lord to talk to them bad enough they could make it happen but to me it'd be something your mind creates for you, not the Lord actually speaking to you. But that's just my opinion. There are too many gray areas to actually answer this question to me.
