saying obvious things to be included

Do you ever do this? Sometimes I'll find myself in a small group, and they will be chatting and I'll feel overwhelmed when they go back and forth. I'm tired of people saying, "why don't you talk" so I will say something obvious and unnecessary lol... it makes it awkward

All the time! I'm like: Don't worry everyone, Captain Obvious is here to make the conversation less interesting!

I try to just paraphrase something back. Makes you look understanding if done right and is also easy.

I just let the awkward silence build up because no matter how long it is, it's less awkward than anything I'll force out of my mouth just to end the silence/make people happy that I'm talking. :x

It's hard for me to talk in general. I try my hardest, but I don't really say any valuable things, so I can relate.

I remember my teacher called it the "pregnant pause" because there was this period of time where the whole class went silent on a discussion and the silence just kept on building and building until my teacher broke the silence.

Back on topic, I am awkward as well. I used to say boring things that people go "Duh!" over. I also repeat questions that I already asked and knew the answer to! How silly is that! Yes it does make me look stupid and even more awkward. Or, perhaps I'm hanging with the wrong group of people? My friends like me the way I am. I don't feel pressured to come up smart, witty things to say.

All the time... conversation is an art, it really is... I'm envious of people with the "gift of gab."

gah, yeh...and with that constant back and forth I become that overwhelmed I find it hard to even keep up with what's being said and have to resort to the odd fake nod of the head like I totally follow.

Yes, I do that!
I also tend to miss the opportunity if I do actually have something to contribute--somebody else always says what I'm thinking, so when it is my turn, I just say that I agree.

It's not awkward, it's a social skill. Everyone does it. It helps get conversations started.

Only in awkward situations. Everytime I contribute to the banality of meaningless small talk a small part of me dies inside.
