Aw~ all of my great grandparents were gone before I was even old enough to remember them.
There's not much you can say when a family member dies, though.
A phone call to your dad would probably be better incase he wants to talk and you can just listen?
Otherwise, I don't think you're really expected to say anything right away.

I left my apartment not too long ago, and as I was leaving, a couple started yelling and screaming at each other. I could hear them loud and clear in the building, and people outside could even hear them. Thank God I wasn't around too long to listen to it.

I wish people would ask me that question. It seems I have to show caring and compassion to everyone around me but when it comes to how I am feeling no-one wants to know. As long as they can pass me all of their problems to add to my mental pile of paperwork thats OK. ::
