All this will pass...

Illusions, keep to good spirits
Ha ha, yes keep to the "good" type of spirits - the ones in your head, not the alcoholic kind! (been there done that with spirits - wreaked absolute HAVOC with my nerves!!). Maybe i was trying to devlop better "spirits" by DRINKING it?? Unfortunately it doesnt work that way: "spirits" (well not yet anyway) is not something one can drink or take a pill for .. but there'll be people who disagree i'm sure. lol

I tried the daily affirmation thing, It didn't really work for me, I was saying things over and over but ...
What about "Afirmations of the Heavier Kind"? (subliminal, combined with visuals/music)

... deep down I knew them not to be true so it had no effect on me really..
That's the "beauty" of the sunconscious & imagination - the subconscious believes EVERYTHING you "feed" it. So although at the conscious level you KNOW the affirmations are untrue, YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS DOESN'T (it's very accepting, "unconditional acceptance/love" you might say). Maybe why the affirmations didn't work (and like all methods, they have their limits, don't always work, etc) was that they weren't reaching the subconscious level in your brain?. Or maybe there are OTHER beliefs/misbeliefs (con/subcon) that are the cause of whatever problems, and have been unaffected by these/other affirmations (& other things you have tried, eg RSA)??. Or maybe even they're SO deep/hard-wired in your brain, that only an especially deep/comprehensive type of therapy can touch them???

Here is the contents of a web page i saved quite recently from Psychology Today (www.psychologytoday.com; i have an iGoogle gadget for it).
It's quite interesting...

Why Positive Thinking is Bad For You (By Srikumar Rao, PhD)
Positive thinking is so firmly enshrined in our culture that knocking it is a little like attacking motherhood or apple pie. Many persons swear by positive thinking and quite a few have been helped by it. Nevertheless, it is not a very effective tool and can be downright harmful in some cases. There are much better ways to get the benefits that positive thinking allegedly provides.
Perhaps the statement that best exemplifies positive thinking is "When life hands you a lemon, make lemonade." It seems so self-evident that this is a good thing that we never question the wisdom of the adage. But it does not take a whole lot of digging to unearth the flaws in this reasoning.

First, did fate really hand you a lemon or was this merely your initial, unthinking response? Second, is a lemon really a bad thing, something that you would rather not have, but now that you do have it you will somehow salvage something by making lemonade? Finally, it is quite stressful to be handed a lemon until such time as you figure out how to make lemonade. Do you really have to go through this phase?

No matter what happens to us in life we tend to think of it as "good" or "bad". And most of us tend to use the "bad" label three to ten times as often as the "good" label. And when we say something is bad, the odds grow overwhelming that we will experience it as such. And that is when we need positive thinking. We have been given something bad, a real lemon, and we better scramble and make some lemonade out of it and salvage something out of this "bad" situation.

How tiring and tiresome!

Now think back on your own life. Can you recall instances of something that you initially thought was a bad thing that turned out to be not so bad after all or perhaps even a spectacularly good thing? Like the time you just missed a train and had to wait a whole hour for the next one and it was horrible except that your neighbor also missed it so you talked for the first time and a beautiful friendship developed. You will find many instances in your life, some of them very significant such as the job you desperately wanted but didn't get only to find that a much better one came by and you would not have been able to accept it if not for the earlier rejection.

Now lets propose something radical and revolutionary. Lets propose that, no matter what happens to you, you do not stick a bad thing label on it. No matter what. You are fired from your job...your mortgage lender sends you a foreclosure notice . . . your spouse files for divorce . . . or whatever. This seems so far-fetched as to be laughable. Of course these are horrible tragedies and terrible things to happen. Or are they? Is it possible, just possible, that you have been conditioned to think of these happenings as unspeakable tragedies and hence experience them as such?

Viktor Frankl in his book Man's Search for Meaning narrates the tale of the beautiful girl of privilege who was grateful to be in a concentration camp because she was able to connect with a spiritual side of her that she never knew existed. Observations like this led Frankl into his life's work of determining why, when faced with extreme adversity, some persons positively flourish while others disintegrate.

Many who rise so triumphantly never label what they go through as bad and lament over it. They simply take it as a given as if they were a civil engineer surveying the landscape through which a road is to be built. In this view, a swamp is not a bad thing. It is merely something that has to be addressed in the construction plan.

And if you never label something as bad, then you don't need positive thinking and all of the stress associated with getting something bad and experiencing it as such till you figure out how to make lemonade out of it simply goes away.

That is the huge pebble in the positive thinking shoe. "This is bad. Really bad. It's a lemon. But somehow I will make some lemonade out of it and then perhaps it won't be so bad." First you think its bad and then you think you will somehow make it less bad and there is a strong undercurrent that you are playing games and kidding yourself. Some people succeed. Many don't. And those who don't are devastated that the model they were trying so hard to build caved in on them. That's why positive thinking can sometimes be harmful.

Can you actually go through life without labeling what happens to you as good or bad? Sure you can. You have to train yourself to do this. You have been conditioned to think of things as bad or good. You can de-condition yourself. It is neither easy nor fast but it is possible.

Lets say you break your leg. There is stuff you have to do like go to an orthopedist and get it set and go to therapy when the cast comes off. But all the rest of the stuff you pick up "Why did this have to happen to me? Bad things always come my way. I am in such pain. Who will hold the world up now that I am disabled?" is simply baggage. You don't have to pick up this load and the only reason you do is because you were never told that you didn't have to.

I am telling you now. Don't pick up that useless burden. Don't label what happens to you as bad. Then you won't need positive thinking and much of the stress in your life will simply disappear. Poof! Just like that.

While it is true that the subconcious is accepting of everything it is fed, if you are feeding information to it that do not resonate with your beliefs then there is a block in place and it will not reach your subconcious.

If you want to re-program your subconcious first you must believe that it is possible to do what you want it to do. Only then will affirmations work, and the more often your repeat them the better. It is also important to feel it. For example, it is pointless telling yourself you are rich beyond your wildest dreams while you are focusing on your lack of money. Remember words are only images in your mind, so if you have two conflicting images in your mind one of wealth and one of lack then they effectively cancel each other out.

you should see everyday as a gift
Dont look to the future, live in the present, live in the now
just live the life, enjoy the day
and dont think about the future, you cant spell the future,
it works how it works
and life is just a mistery, but you should not be analyzing too much about that
because you cant figure out anyhow, its just what life brought us
and sometimes i wish life should be forever, but we cant change that fact
so we should live in the now, and just live with the facts of life
with the hard times, with the imperfections we've got, with the sad moments,
but we should think about good times, and have a little joy
the past, the future, and the present is all just a matter of time
and time will not stop go by, but we can make a good time out of it ;)

I tried listening to a few subliminal music type things and It only had a slight effect on me when I listened to it for the first time, after I listened to it as routine and it wasn't fun it was like I was forcing myself to do it and I wasn't getting any futher, the sublminal audios were long that didn;t help, maybe I need to find a different one and I'll try again sometime =)

Also I have a book on tackling anxiety via CBT so I need to work through that yet aswell =)

No, living in something akin to sorrow is the consequence, not the choice. The choice is to see what you think is truly there, whether it be positive or negative. What you "think", as you say, has little to do with what I'm talking about considering a non-absolute perception. You may think something is going positively or negatively, but it's one's choice to either ignore or embrace what you perceive. And that choice does change what happens, to an extent of your actions.

Yup its ones choice to choose whether they accept it/let it be/do something about it or complain/get frustrated about what is.. anything other than accepting what is would be crazy.. its the denial of the now, by putting a negative spin on things you would be causing further pain to yourself when its not needed, You know the thinking part in itself is a fail I was reading the book the power of now and it says you should watch you mind be the witness of all your thoughts not judge of them but just watch them, You are not your thoughts, They are from your egoic mind which is filled with memories etc etc and they egoic mind would love for you to get in a situation where it can well do what it does normally and eventually it becomes second nature, they say by watching the thought without judgeing it that is( because if you judge it you let the voice in through the backdoor) you can be, You have a new sense of consciousness and you are no longer run by your egoic mind, so when we associate ourselves with our thinking thats bad in itself..

For those interested, i have found a page where the book "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle can be viewed --> Eckhart Tolle the Power of Now

For those especially keen (like myself) there is also an ebook/pdf that can be downloaded (for free) --> Click on "Download" in the bar underneath the reading panel...

Enjoy :)

nothing really matters and we're all going to die.

That's why marriage/women is pretty far down on my list of things in life. I'm happier buying videogames and car parts until my life is over.

I can somewhat relate,
I started reading The power of now (thank you for that thesmallestloser :) ) and
it's making me anxious in a very special way like anything is most things are making me anxious right now, giving up thinking about the past seems like a good thing for me, giving up fear for the future is something that makes me anxious for some reason, I fear not having the energy of taking every single step, or suddenly tumbling down to step 1 over and over again. I see clearly this type of thinking and experiences has made this become a second nature.

Also, I cannot rhyme the idea of living the unconscious and still respond and act to anything in life that takes a lot of "thinking/deciding/foreseeing future".
For me personally, the book is frightening because of my habit of always expecting the worst of everything. For me it's a real fear of stepping out of this waiting episode.

waiting i.e. doing nothing gets us nothing! No matter what we do, we always wind up in the present as opposed to the past or future! The past and future are just somewhat more deeply 'entrenched' neural circuits and extrapolations based on previously used ones, respectively.

I think I'll drink a milkshake, she is a lemon, my favourite and definitely if you that'll last.

waiting is a euphemism for hopeful nothingness

I disagree on a certain level. What you're saying has practical applications, but in essence I'm not so sure with the message. Outcome probability perception is based on real outcomes. I think the problem lies in the fact that many people confuse a probability for a practical possibility, and so waiting becomes a deterrent to progress.

Yes, agreed. My first few lines were facetious and the last was just bitter.

Waiting certainly has its applications.

there might be more than one kind of waiting though?

waiting for something to happen
waiting for something to end
waiting in order to avoid anything

maybe... gotta go to class :D

Responding to Gerdje: I suggest you take it very easy with this book, and certainly don't pressure yourself into changing according to its contents, or even having to read it. You have to be ready for such changes, otherwise you may get into a "spot of bother". I recall a few years back, reading a "new" book that i got hold of, and after reading just the first chapter i became signifcantly depressed (ie it triggered a depression). So i stopped reading the book at that point. Maybe i'm ready now for it, possibly am.
I've read some reviews & notes about this book (maybe you could? i can give you some webpage addresses if want), and i think i am in perfect readiness for the wisdom it contains, so i am considering buying the book & wading into it.

Thanks for responding.:)

Yes, I know it will especially cause I'm not that much of a reader, and I tend to believe that I know everything better, yet, my "self proclaimed wisdom" hasn't brought me that far if I look back.
Whenever I do non-social things I'm always acting like a perfectionist, it either be great or I failed and give up, not the correct way of doing, I know.
That's why I saved to book and read to page 40, It takes energy and commitment, 2 things i'm not really so good in, and English is not my main language, but I'm to spend more time into reading instead of playing video games or watching TV. I'd be glad for the webpage, learning is always good.

I've yet to learn, any small step IS a step forward.:)

This thread was really just a bit of a rant, but has turned into sth more positive .. never mind......

Here is my suggested order of reading:
