Wish someone hud telt me years ago active guitar pickups were better... Why? Cuz there nae need tae fanny aboot soldering this wire tae that yin, onto this part o’ the input jack. Nane o’ that time consuming pish ! Naw !

The pins from this wire go into there, that yin there. Connect a 9 volt and yer done... Grand !
Anyway, am kinda struggling with writing block at the moment, in terms o’ writing good guitar riffs. :(

I think it'd be a good transition riff personally, it feels like the start of a song when it starts out slow then amps up with this sort of riff then goes into the song even harder type of thing (not musically talented in anyway so I hope this makes sense )

Aye... that all made sense, Loyal. (y)

I’m very much of same option about that riff now: it’s a transition riff. Definitely a transition from, as you said, starting off at slower tempo and then going into that riff. I’m also think the second metal riff I came up with could probably be a transition into a solo or something or a bridge riff. As it’s basically a slight variation on the first riff.

I’m still kinda unsure about the overall vibe and direction of the song I’m going for, really. I have cut the first and second riffs together to try and flesh out a basic song structure though.

And I’m thinking — since that first metal riff I came up with is already within the thrash metal tempo, I might keep with the direction I’m going with that riff and go for an early days Metallica vibe. Since it already has that kinda sound / approach.

Quite shocked my mother actually likes that new riff I came up with and those previous one.

Though, ah shouldnae really; since she was always into hard rock n’ metal music, before I was born. It’s just weird sit at my laptop, playing back those fast as fuck riffs, and my mother giving her input as to the direction I should take them.

So, eh, I’m trending in Hot & New playlist for the metal genre... again ! At number 3 appropriately enough.(y) And that’s despite the fact am still just come up wae these riff ideas on the hoof. Still huv’nae a clue as to how ah go aboot turning a riff into a full song. Am just winging it n’ gan: “Hmmm... that’s sound awrite. Better record that afore ah forget how to play it”

In other words: I’m not sitting down with my guitar with intention to write a riff that sounds like this band or that band. Which makes me trending on SoundCloud aw the more amazing. Though, ah must admit, part of me still wishes ah wus really shite at playing the guitar — still am to an extent — when ah started uploading to SoundCloud, y’know? It would’ve made the record label interest that wee bit mair surprising if my initial songs were badly written and poorly produced like Napalm Death. Only joking, I actually like that band.

I came up with another pedal note riff idea yesterday that sounded like fuckin’ Def Leppard; and was just from me messing about. Barring my first finger across the 6th fret and adding notes with my other fingers. Did’nae record it... yet ! Cuz it’s bad enough that I’ve got 3 guitar riff ideas to work on after ma wee hiatus from playing the guitar.

Anyway, I think I’ve kinda figured out how I might flesh out the riffs from that 3rd idea:
  • The pinch harmonic part from the start of the 3.5 take as intro
  • Followed by the initial chugging riff idea
  • And have the riff variation that I did after the pinch harmonics as an outro, since it’s played at a faster:unsure:
Och, I’ll see how it goes... At least, my 3rd riff idea will be the easiest to shape into a song.

Heck yeah, Graeme. That's a great riff.

Thanks, man. Looks like I've found another one, and I wasn't even trying. That riff just came to me after I was trying to remember that first metal riff that I'd came up with.

I don't know whether stay that new riff should stay in Drop D tuning, though? Or if I should just tune down to Drop B?

Don't get me wrong, that riff sounds great as it is. It's just, well it's already in more Nu-Metal territory, anyway. What with that dissonant chord ringing out, open string palm mutes I'm hitting between that chord, and the triplet feel of the last 4 chords before the riff starts over.

I like it, it's very sludgy.

Also, I have no idea what the rest of what you said means.

My oldest sister today just pointed out that the bald guy playing slide-guitar in this Lenny Kravitz cover is my first guitar tutor.
First thing she says to me after hoovering my room: "Did ye recognise David?"

Confused, I go: "Eh! Whit ye oan aboot?"

She goes: "That invite ye accepted the other day, it's yer aul' guitar teacher!"

Too which I respond: "Fuuck off - that's no him!! He hud long hair when ah last saw him"

It was only when she specifically made reference to his eyes that I realised it actually was him.

Dammit! I've got writer's block, and ah don't know how best to combat it. Learn more chords? More theory?

I'm noticing that all my guitar riffs just seem to be parts of songs, but due to me never being taught or having the theory side of things explained to me, I don't know how to expand upon a 30 second or 1 minute idea.

That said, thanks to this song by Canadian metal band Kittie...

I've partly worked out a drum idea that could go with this riff...
