What's you American Accent? (quiz! :D)

I found this quiz surfing the interwebs, so what's yours?

What American accent do you have?

Your Result: The Midland
"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.
Result Breakdown:
85% The Midland
81% Boston
80% The West
59% North Central
39% The Northeast
33% Philadelphia
33% The Inland North
27% The South

Haha, the quiz is right! :)

Your Result: The West
Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta.

Your Result: The Northeast
Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.

Quiz URL: What American accent do you have?

I've lived in the North Eastern part of the US my entire life, yet the guy from an obscure little island off the coast of Australia is the one who has the northeastern accent, interesting  I guess I did get high on Boston which is down the street (or like, 3 long, highway streets) from me ::p:

This was neat! Although question 7 really tripped me up because sometimes I pronounce "on" both ways they suggested. It's weird, but I do that with a lot of other words too, like "route" for instance. Sometimes I will say it like "root," but sometimes route.

Anyway, my first results were:

When I changed number 7, I got this result:

93%

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

So I guess overall, I have a slight accent, but hardly at all? :idontknow:

I couldn't finish the quiz because the answers for question 8 are not exhaustive. I think "Mary" and "marry" sound the same but think "merry" sounds different from them. The question didn't have that as an answer though.

And a midland American accent is still an accent. Just because a Midland American accent is the most consistent with Standard English does not make it any less of an accent. All Americans have accents. The people who made the quiz are idiots.

I would definitely consider Pennsylvanians to have an accent - Western PA, anyway. I lived there and there was a distinct sound to their words that we don't have up here in New England.

I'm sure Ohio, Indiana and all those sound different, too. I don't know what that quiz is talking about >:l

That's a Southern accent you've got there. You may love it, you may hate it, you may swear you don't have it, but whatever the case, we can hear it.

LMAO. Howdy yall!!!. I think I have a mixed accent because country people think that I speak really proper. I had to take speech classes for 8 years in school just so that people in Missouri could understand me.

Now, I'm not very knowledgeable of American accents... But, is it my imagination or should a New York City accent not sound anything like an English accent? lol

True, but the English accent seems to have a soft "r" (some of them anyway, not sure if they all do), and New Yorkers don't pronounce that "r" either - at least not the way we pronounce it in New England (and California, and elsewhere in the USA...).

Probably other letters that are similar too, the "r" just sprang to mind.

Anyway, I'm babbling.
