My grandmother is 96 years old, smoked until 80. She started when she was 14.

Some people are just different.
I want to quit, because I am feeling some pains in the chest area when I run and things like that. You can live with this for 40 years... but whe
n day the heart won't work anymore.

I smoke a lot and drink a lot of coffe.

Both of my parents smoked and they passed away at a too young age from cancer and heart attack.

I used to stress-smoke for about a year or so. When I had a deadline or something coming up. But I realised too that it just made me feel and smell unfit and disgusting. My brother smoked for years and also gave up. He used to be quite unfit in those times but he runs marathons now.

The going outside and thinking for a bit when I smoked was nice though. I guess that's what it is for many people. A moment that they can contemplate, socialise, etc. a bit, to cut themselves off from the stress. But you can do that through other ways, that aren't destructive.

My grandmother is 87 and still going. She smoked like a chimney. My granddad died year ago and he was younger than her. I think genetics must play a part.

Frankly, smoking to fit in is a stupid idea. All you're doing is ruining your health, increasing your risks, and more-or-less literally burning money. Some folks also find the habit utterly repulsive (like yours truly) and for a lot of folks it's not an easy habit to kick.

And for the record, according to Wikipedia, in both the U.S. and the U.K. smokers are a (significant) minority at around 20%, and one that's likely to continue to decline.

I worry about my coffee input, which was always about staying alert, during lectures. I have a lot now - strength 5. Because I think it's the cheapest drink, when I'm homebound.

Dad is 86 and I don't know anyone your grandma's age. Mum died of an embolism in her tummy. ALL my uncles, aunties, many dead, and everyone loves their tobacco. I still see that magic factor in life, which I seem to lack. nicotine

Benzos look good on wikipedia

I am a former smoker. Not a cheap habit, or a very healthy one. However, I always find it quite alarming when some people show such a hatred for someone when they see that they are smoking. We live in a free country, and cigarette smoking is perfectly legal, and yet some people look at you as if you just kidnapped a baby.

It's fine if you personally don't like it, but if you walk by in an alley way where I am smoking away from everyone, then I personally felt like saying "screw yourself."

I had looks all the time, and even though smoking isn't the greatest thing, the governement in the U.S. is doing their damndest to get the general public to despise and hate smokers. The U.S. Government are hypocritical, as there are so many other posionous and harmful things killing people rather than cigarettes. I think the level of hate and scare tactics leveled at people in some of those commercials are heinous and pathetic. I believe the commercials are for the non-smokers; to drill it into their heads that they should despise smokers. The reason I say that is because every smoker is well aware of the possible risks of over-smoking. Too much of every substance is harmful.

Do you realize how many people are addicted to alcohol? They spend so much money it, it destroys their liver, impairs their thinking, and it burns a hole through their wallet even faster than cigarettes. Yet where is the government onslaught against people addicted to alcohol? This problem is just as great, if not greater than tobacco addiction. Not only drunk driving is a problem, but the actual health crisis that happen when people are addicted to it. My dad is a chronic alcoholic, and his health has declined to a dismal state.

If you hate smokers you have been decieved by the U.S. Government or other government to believe that smokers are vile and disgusting people. This is not true.

In a normal world, I would think the original post was a joke. I am a failure because I am the only one who doesn´t smoke WTF :)? Weird how everyone takes it so seriously.

I too find the a really strange post and am doubting whether it's serious or not.

However, I smoke and even though I don't have a lot of friends (almost none basically) but noone smokes. I have some people I play airsoft with that all smoke but I never smoked to fit in. If people judge me for smoking than to be honest I couldn't care less.

You can say whatever you want but it does calm me down. It's the only thing I do that isn't healthy and noone will take it away from me unless I want to quit. Besides it's not like I smoke 2 packs a day...half a pack max.

I never smoked regularly ,only when I was fooling around at parties I smoked and usually cigars or hookah.
But I don't believe I'm a failure because I didn't smoked, actually I used to be proud of it and I was even making fun of smokers.

Why all the hate to smokers? It doesn't bother you at all if they aren't smoking next to you. I ALWAYS ask the people I'm with if it's ok if I smoke and if someone minds then I'll be happy to step away.

I am the only person who never has smoked tobacco, doesn't, and never will.

Everyone I've ever met likes smoking - mostly rolling from pouches - or cigarettes.

From school we we told not to. I agreed. Others were, previously.

I can think of just one good friend who doesn't ; enough savvy to keep healthy.

From the homeless, jobless, to the elderly, teenagers, I don't know anyone else who doesn't. ALL my family, from age 12, to their nineties.

Maybe it's the cocaine of social stature. I've recently considered it as an option to improve myself. Not yet

What do you think?
no ones a failure because they don't smoke/do drugs. You're Intelligent if you don't use tobacco. Having lost a family member to smoking related illness trust me, it's dumb dumb dumb to smoke. Using drugs in general is just escapism I cannot say I think anyone who is a drug user is someone I admire. Having said that I have done all kinds of drugs and will try anything once but find addiction to anything weak. Makes people weak. I don't like weakness.

To be honest? Smoking does CONNECT people, in a way. But it definitely does not define you and no-one else and you shouldn't use others as guide. I don't think it will be such a life-changing experience for you, socially.

Even though, I'm in high school, back in Poland a lot of us used to smoke. I never had a pack with me, but went out for a smoke once in a while, but here it's so badly-perceived... and I'm glad! Honestly, smoking can never do any good.

For the record, I don't hate smokers. That's your prerogative. I was tempted to point out that smokers are a declining minority because they're being demonized myself, actually. My mother recently quit - after countless attempts - because the state (who my dad works for) was going to require tobacco users to report as such and increase insurance premiums. That wouldn't fly for some other detrimental habits.

As long as you aren't lighting up in my face I couldn't give less of a damn, even if, as I said, I'm repulsed by smoke.

I do think it's stupid how people react to smokers.

I stress smoked for a while, did it properly outside, and my roommates all freaked out and started gossipping about me. "HE SMOKES!! OMG!"

And started giving all sorts of speeches on why it's bad as if they were conditioned to do so.
Bunch of healthfreaks.

So that makes smokers not intelligent? Makes us weak? I don't do any kind of drugs, don't drink alcohol (hardly ever) and eat healthy yet because I smoke I'm weak. I'm sorry but I find that offensive, maybe I took it the wrong way or not.

If you consider the well documented health effects of smoking then perhaps smoking in not a sensible life choice?

I don't even know what to reply to that, it won't make any difference anyways since everyone seems to judge people for it anyways.
