Self Portraits

I was feeling creative today so started playing with my pen tablet on Corel Painter. In need of something to draw, I remembered my favorite assignment when I was in art school and grabbed a mirror. As I was drawing I thought about how this might be a fun exercise for anyone else who might be interested.

Many of us hate the way we think we look or hate the way we think others think we look, or both. When I'm drawing from the mirror, and I look objectively at the reflected image in order to draw what I see, I am able to free myself from all the negative thoughts about my appearance.

Try it yourself. Just draw what you see - not what you feel. Don't make stuff up that's not there. Be objective - keep your preconceived notions and emotions out of it.

Post the results. There aren't any prizes. Have fun!

I'll go first:

Smash the Mirror

Cool Drawing!!!I am really impressed you drew that, it kinda does look like one of the effects you put on a picture. And for the picture one, same I can't Do self-portraits unless I use some already taken picture. Otherwise it looks like some horrible freakish monster. I mean on the paper, and probably pretty close in real life too ;D. I just can't do it, even if I try for hours. I had an assignment for it well, like right now, and I just couldn't do it.

Edit- Dude I don't know what in the what I was typing but - I am you really drew that??? What the hell??/

Re: Smash the Mirror

That is fantastic Coyote. I can't believe you did it all in Painter. Brilliant.

Actually it was Corel Painter Essentials - came free with the pen tablet. Just like drawing with pencil, chalk, charcoal on paper (almost). Drew it on my laptop while looking in the mirror - tiny screen! Makes me want to get a big monitor.

Thanks for all the compliments.

Really, it doesn't matter how well you draw - the point is to concentrate on the drawing process and forget that you're looking at yourself. Focus on drawing the image and forget about judging yourself.

See how it feels - it's cool!

This has nothing really to do wit the post but...... I actually sat through a someone drawing a portrait of me and my friend earlier in the middle of central London, with sooooo many people watching. This is usually something that would make me feel extremely self conscious in but just doing me made me feel so much better... sorry just had to share this :)

Nice drawing for a canine. ;)

My problem with art is that I'm too much of a realist. If I can't put something down exactly how it looks to me, I get frustrated and eventually give up. I'm the same with playing music, too. I guess I'll never become a famous artist.

EDIT: Pookah, nice.... uh, filters. Yeah, that's it. ;)
