possessed

I need more space for all my possessions (junk). But maybe I can escape this possession obsession. Why do we hang on to useless stuff? How much time do we waste collecting stuff? Do I own the stuff or does the stuff own me?

Public storage seems like a good idea. A place to put my stuff. But spending money to store a bunch of junk, hmm.

If it's just "junk" I don't see the point of putting it in public storage. That's like putting all your stuff there and never seeing it again, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of having it. I guess we hang on to useless stuff because we're attached to it, and it makes us feel safe in some way or an other, or we connect it with certain memories or ideas. I know you probably won't get rid of it, but that is usually the best solution. I have hardly any stuff, just because I don't like having it and I've never had a problem with getting rid of anything.

Are you a hoarder? I am one.

I try not to hoard too much of anything. But so far I'm up to 4 distortion and overdrive pedals for my guitar. That's not counting the compressor and EQ pedals. And so far my favorite sound is just my Marshall cranked full up!

But I can't crank it all the time. So I keep holding on to these pedals. And then there are all those medieval Europe history books I have. And those action figures of my namesake. And those few falconry books. And all those RPG books. And that keyboard I hardly ever touch. And that violin. And that harmonica. And I really need to stop.

When I see metal I pick it up, all around my house are pieces of fans and tvs. Every can cap I've pulled off since I was 14. Nails, metal grating, stripped umbrellas, headphones that don't work, light bulbs, metal balls, volume and frequency knobs, mirrors, alfoil stars are the things I can see near me at the moment.

It doesn't help that every year the council has a junk pick up, where everyone dumps their bits and pieces on the footpath, where I have to walk! A friend and I have taken to walking around the streets when the pick up is on and salvaging. I just don't want to see it all get thrown away! Hah.

How I've solved the problem is I put different bits together and make things, animals, mobiles etc I find that once they stop being pieces of metal they're not important anymore.

Only problem is, some things like aluminium doesn't weld. Or is very hard to weld.

I had a massive sort out a couple years back and it was one of the best things I ever did! All my possesions in the whole world would probably fit in the boot of a car now, and it feels really good. I just have what I need now and everything is managable and simple now.

My advice is, anything that you don't use within about 6 months to a year, just bin it or give it away.....you won't even miss it!
