Bruh even Elon Musk is playing video games and billion other people. Are you calling them a basement dwellers with mental illness?
I have social anxiety but playing video games doesnt have anything to do with it, its just my crappy childhood. :>

@Lainy Ye, as I've seen my last boyfriend got into video games and then developed social anxiety. Who knows. That could be the case.

You want to know how I got these scars?
In reality they are just basement dwellers who escape social life trough games, and playing games makes it worse. Maybe I',m wrong

I'm hardly a basement dweller. Robin Williams was hardly a basement dweller.
Many many people play video games and lead a normal social life.
Gaming has evolved to become more social, so I think your assumption is - for the most part - wrong.

Any form of obsessive escapism to the point of isolation can help develop social anxiety. Books, shows and movies are also likely culprits given enough time.

I wouldn't say games are a cause, rather one of many methods by which. Everything in moderation, as they say.

Yes, it just adds to their anxiety. And if people live on welfare or any other kind of financial support they can just easily get lost in games and develop more of these ''problems''. That is why it is hard to find solid boyfriend.

@PugofCrydee Ye but you can not compare Robin Williams to someone who playz games all day.

Maybe I should clarify..

Gaming doesn't mean you lock yourself in a basement all day.
For those that do, of course it could lead to problems.

People can become addicted to just about anything. Most people wrongly blame the symptom rather than the actual cause.

Gaming doesn't do this to people, people do this to themselves.

How is can be good to play games? It is just a total waste of time. Most games require a lot of energy so that means it is not good for relaxation. It is just a way to escape reality but how can you cure social phobia if you can escape the reality whenever you want.

It's just a hobby. You could technically argue that any hobby, ANY could be a waste of time. You can't say that one pursuit is inherently inferior to another. Also you don't know what these guys do with their free time. I'm the only one that's admitted to not leaving the house much. But that doesn't apply to everyone that plays games. And even then I'm not shut in all the time.

Also you'd be surprised at how relaxing some people find it. Both me and my girl like to play halo and gears of war couch co-op and it's fun as hell.

Those that dive into fantasy and escapism as a means to avoid social obligation and improvement wouldn't likely rid themselves of social phobia any time soon anyway. If not games, they'd find something else.

And one could argue that literally anything is a waste of time since we're all going to die and culture will fade into nothing when the species inevitably goes extinct. Doesn't make fun things any less fun, nor does it make living any less enjoyable.

In that, I'd even argue games serve a rather important function in the human need to achieve, thrive, solve problems and fight. Sure, it's bad when it takes over one's life, but as a harmless recreational extra, it's quite beneficial.

So I've been going to counseling my university offers and they had me fill out this questionnaire on the computer and it read that I was depressed and socially anxious, both scores were in the 90's so it was high. That's what her and I have been discussing these past few sessions. On a related note, I bought Madden 25 for like, 5 bucks at GameStop and have barely played them even when I have all the free time in the world and they are one of my only hobbies to indulge in, I started a season in NHL 17 and bought Resident Evil 4 and don't have any interest anymore nor in any of the game modes. It's like whenever I buy a new video game I lose interest in it and sometimes I don't even feel like playing video games in the first place. Sometimes (or a lot) of times I wish I could lay on the carpet and sink into the floor or sleep for 9 hours...I don't want to be depressed but she may be onto something, I don't know yet but that would suck.

@BlackPuma Why go in this whole ''we are all gonna die anyway''. Why do anything good if we are gonna die anyway right. So could you have a solid argument why waste time playing games when you could do so much more in that point in time?

My point is that if everything is objectively a waste of time, why not fill the time in which you're not actively maintaining your existence with things that are fun and enjoyable?

This needn't even have to mean games per definition. If someone gets a kick out of collecting stamps, reading a book, going for walks, it's all the same. Recreational time should be spent doing what a person finds most enjoyable.

Don't you think games only make social anxiety stronger?

I don't think they make social anxiety worse. I think video games as an outlet after dealing with all the stress of the day. It's nice to sit back and sit in a world where all your troubles are gone for a few hours.

To be honest I am very social and have autism. I am in a course to be a resident care worker, and by the end of the day I am drained. So by the end of the day I play a video game to recharge and enjoy myself. So no, I don't think that they make social anxiety stronger.

If comfort only adds up to your anxiety, how the hell playing video games gonna help you in any way. @BlackPuma I will not even dwell into this whole, everything is meaningless, ohh it has no point, ***** attitude. Go tell that to children in Africa. I would even say that many guys get addicted to games and that develops some sort of anxiety because all they want to do is play games.
