Anyone who know's you knows that you mean well and you was doing a good hearted thing, but the mother is right children need to know no means no.
Children have to learn that they cannot have everything they want.
Just life i guess.

I am sure you did it in a good meaning, but kids are also very good to affect their parrents by starting to cry when they dont get what they want.

I think the rule is, never interfere in other parrents education of their children. Of course if they hit them, it is your job to do something by contacting the authorities but else never do it.

A couple of years ago in a super market, I saw a child laying on the floor screaming because she wanted something. Her father then did the same, the child then looked very surprised at him and said, lets go home. I thought that was a quite cool way of dealing with it.

You meant well. :) That counts for something, but...
Damn girl chill out.
I do not have kids but I have seen people that have kids do exactly the same thing to other people kids.
I would do the same just to quiet the kid up as I have seen others do.
I am probably going to get negative reputation for this but I do not think
people enjoy hearing kids crying and screaming at the top of their lungs.
I have countless memories of this one long plane flights.

The mother was a bit too harsh, i think. No means no, it's okay to say no sometimes, but that doesn't mean you have to be militar about it, especially to a five year old who is crying. You were being nice, you got the sweets for the kid as a gift, it was a bit harsh for the mother to make the kid return them. The little girl was nice, said thank you and was happy about it, why ruin her happiness? Some mothers are just stupid like that... Sorry if i sound like a jerk, but when i see these things i can't help but believe the parents are authoritarian and thirsty of control. It makes me want to punch them right in the face. -sigh-

I liked this.

Yeah I just steer clear of situations like that. Along time ago these two little neighbor girls who were about 7 or 8 asked my Dad for a dollar, well he gave it to them and then the next thing you know one of their mothers came down here and started going off on him. Telling him they were not poor and did not need his money, the funny thing is my dad cussed her out and told her to get her nasty ass back up the street (I would have done the same thing). But it really bothered him that the Mother acted like that, she was his first cousin too 2 beat all hell.

Lesson: Don't fool with other peoples kids when it comes to things like that. They may take it as people look down on and feel sorry for them thinking they are poor or something. Its a good thought though Gary and nice!

you lot are doing my nut in  hmmm ill scroll through the posts and see how many agree and disagree ... i think im winning on the i was right .. ill have a look

Gary, really it is not right or wrong because some parents would not mind that you did that and others would. It really just depends on the parent. It was a nice, sweet gesture you made regardless. i would not beat yourself up over it. :)

im not barry :) just get a sex change and marry me lol :D

I agree with Barry here. It could easily have gone the other way and the mother really did want to give the kid some candy but could not afford it and you would have been the hero. No need to beat yourself up just because it didn't work out this time.

Hehe, I joined here before Serafina was a mod. So I guess
that is why I do not see her as one, even if she in fact is.

This raises an interesting question however, should mods be able to post?
I mean mods are normal users with the power of banning people.

Yes, and now I will get banned as I questioned the rules.
It's been a good run ya'll :)

Back to the original topic and OP.
I do not think you did anything wrong.
You had the right intention in mind.
The lady could have taken the sweets from her kid and made some kind
of deal with the kid.
Like:
"This nice man gave you this candy but you will only be given it if...."
I am sure she just took out her frustration on the OP.

I've just skimmed through others' responses, but my first instinct is to say that yes, you meant well, but I always understood that with things like this, it is appropriate to ask the parent's permission before offering something like this. The mother could have handled it/reacted in a better way, but really, it did come across as you undermining what she said- regardless of whether the child was crying just to get her own way or not.

Pfft. If she's going to ban you for disagreeing with her, then she shouldn't be a mod to begin with--and there are other mods if one mod abuses their power. I see no indication she'd do anything like that, though.

I just think you took her post wrong--she wrote at length to explain how she saw it as a parent.
