From what I've found in America, yes, I'd say quite a few think this. These are the same people that think the Dutch are from Dutchland (or in some cases Deustchland - that is how America ended up with the Pennsylvania Dutch, who aren't Dutch, but German). Suffice it to say, these people are not our most prized possessions.
