Is it COOL to have psychological problems nowadays?

Everyone gets depressed its normal.. and from what you said it sounds like shes depressed that everything is turning into a routine.. which is extremely normal so she probably IS depressed, just not as severely as others. Plus there are mild forms of bipolar disorder..

Then theres the attention thing.. you obviously want to talk to people you TRUST about your problems, which is a good thing because it does help quite a bit.. which is why she brought it up. If someone told me I just wanted attention if I told a group of friends or family that I have social anxiety, I would be extremely upset.

yeah, it's called "attention whoring disorder". It gets pretty severe in some cases.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

that was funny, but you dont know if the girl could actually be depressed. How would you feel if somebody called you an attention whore if which in fact you really were depressed. Again, depression is not a disorder for fugly people.

The fact that everyone is saying that she is just doing this for attention because she was open with her feelings and her situation, is the reason why no one takes anyone with anxiety/depression/any other disorder seriously. If you can't see it, you can't feel what they are feeling... then it must not be true. I mean, considering how much people with SA want the world to understand their pain, maybe you guys should be a little more understanding of other people and stop being so judgmental over a situation and person you know nothing about (including the OP).

To be honest, it's not that it's "cool" to people. But when people think/know someone has a disorder they usually get "special treatment" from that person, and lots of attention.
For some reason social phobia doesn't work like that :( It's like it does the opposite and pushes them away and labels you a freak rather than getting attention for it.
"Attention Whoring Disorder"
Laughed at that.
Sure. I get compliments on my mental instability all the time. ::p:
"Hey maan! Diggin that disorder your puttin on. Keep it up!"

Glad I made you laugh :D

I know that. When I said that, I was thinking more about those who actually fake it for attention and to try to look "cool". I've known a few people like that before, they make my blood boil.

My cousin said at the sunday's lunch, a month ago, that she was depressed.

And she started to tell us what she was feeling and I could sense that she was really enjoying to talk about her sadness, her "emptiness" and the fact that she "was feeling numb" (linkin park song?).

And all family was startled and worried! And I was like WTF! She has tons of boyfriends and go to parties every week! And a depressed person definitely doesnt uses make up and spend so much time taking care of her hair. SHE IS OBVIOULSY NOT A DEPRESSED PERSON!

And she went to a neurologist (maybe it's cooler than to go to a psychiatrist) and HE SAID THAT SHE WAS ACTUALLY DEPRESSED! And prescribed antidepressants for her.

And now the best part: after 2 weeks taking the medicine she told us at the same table THAT SHE WAS CURED! The medicine cured her depression in just 2 weeks!

And her mother (my aunt) started to say that she had to go to a "neurologist" too, because she thinks she is BIPOLAR! Oh God...

I couldn't control myself and said: "Please, see a documentary called "The Bridge", about people who jump from the Golden Gate Bridge, they interviewed a guy who jumped over the bridge and survived and he is bipolar. The guy never could work or go to college, his father says that when he has maniac episodes, he can't even eat dinner or lunch. Please, you are not bipolar, you just have ups and downs, like everybody else here (*excluding me I thought, lol*)

Hmmmmm so depressed people wear black, don't look people in the eyes, or say a word, and have plastic bags as pets right? You sound jealous and petty. I have a friend who is pretty, has tons of friends, parties all the time, is loud, popular, and slits her wrists frequently. Who are you to judge who is depressed or not? I think you are being insensitive and ridiculous.

^^^^ Thank yall for saying that.

Idk about most people, but when I get servilely depressed/ suicidal I act happier around people to try and hide it. I also don't stop my daily grooming habits.

Couldn't agree with you more on this one
Years ago I used to go out with a Girl who seemed (on the outside) to be Headstrong, independant, outgoing, flirtatious and who had many more friends than I ever did, but every now and again should would end up huddled in the womens toilets with a smashed bottle - cutting into herself slowly up her arms.

And no - it wasn't for effect, as after the event she didn't want to talk about it and went to great pains to try and hide the scars.

Just cos you might be cool - doesn't neccesarily mean you don't hurt - and your emotions are genuine.

I didn't think of it that way... You're right. I probably didn't pay too much attention to certain parts of that post.

I don't think "cool" is the right description. While declaring mental illness is gradually becoming more acceptable to society, it's not considered cool to have it. Because it is becoming more acceptable to speak about, it brings about attention and support from others. The more the word gets out, the more folks will acknowledge issues with themselves and seek out that attention and support.

We do live in the information age after all.

It's hard to judge without spending time with her, but I wouldn't rule out serious problems, just because she parties and has plenty of bfs, and happens to be 'cured' after taking meds. Possible explanations: she has a chemical imbalance causing her depression hence is addressed when taking meds. She has bi polar which is also the above and I know people who have bi polar and they suffer to different extents and most of them don't look like they are suffering. A guy who hosts TV shows here also suffers from it. About the partying and bfs, that could just be her desperately trying to fill the void. Her talking about it of course is seeking attention, but nothing wrong with it if she feels she needs the help of other people and of professionals. When i'm desperate i'll just talk about it, because holding it inside hurts too much.
