How can some people NEVER panic about ANYTHING???

Do you know what I'm talking about?

There are some people who are always worried about everything! (most people fit into THIS category). They'll say things like:

"What if I fail the exam and not get into University!"
"What if I can't find a job after finishing school!"
"The plane is shaking [going through turbulence] am I going to die?"
"I got into a car accident last week what if I crash again???"
"How will I fight off this speeding ticket I have I'll have no money"
"I lost my job I'm going to end up in a cardboard box!"

...etc etc etc

Then there is Type 2 (the type of people I envy). These people may seem like they just don't care, but it's really just not worrying. Like if they're on a plane and it's going down, they might say "There's nothing I can do, everyone should just relax and let the pilots do their thing". Or if they're fired from a job they 'll just brush it off and say they'll "figure out a way", etc. In other words when **** hits the fan, they don't worry. Or if they do something non-traditional (quit a job when they dont have another backup), they don't worry about what might happen.

Now it's easy to say "just don't panic" but that's simply easier said than done. Is it possible to become like Type 2, or is it something more genetic? How can someone (like most people) who naturally worry about so many things have that attitude of not having so much fear?

Here is a perfect example of a Type 2 Person:

I am the worried type.. But I also have my .. strong confident moments.
You can train it, as a discipline! Say those confident sentences. Act like there could be no bad outcome.

I believe you can train it by changing how you think, then eventually it will become your natural state.

^ that.

Once you realize nothing in this world makes any sense (I mean SERIOUSLY think about that, please. Most people don't understand what I mean when I say the world is pointless and nothing makes sense. Read up on Nihilism), you will learn to accept things as they are. Things will happen, and nothing is serious enough for you to be worrying about. We all leave this world at some point. Why worry?

I think it's less of utterly discounting the possibility of a bad outcome, and more of believing that you can take on whatever happens and live to tell the tale. I know actual people who are like that, and those are the ones I truly envy. Although I'm not saying they don't worry about anything. Most of the time, they just know how to get a handle on it and surrender what they can't control to chance.

Hehe. I love how the Captain so calmly says they're going into the Hudson.

I know what you mean. Everything is fraught with anxiety for me. I wish I could be like those people who just don't seem to worry about anything. Or maybe they worry, but they have the capacity to deal with uncertainty?

I envy those people...they can go on dates, apply for jobs, switch jobs, try new things...stuff I'm too scared to do.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a drug or therapy to easily (magically!) transform us into one of those people?

Most people fall into the first category because it is what we have been taught from a young age by parents, peers, teachers, and media.

It takes a lot to overcome the programming from our past:

- It take faith to know that whatever happens it's for a reason.
- It takes action, knowing that you've done whatever you can to control the situation, and whatever happens after that isn't your immediate problem. If you are an action person, it also helps pick you up from setbacks. "Okay I lost my job, but I will immediately do whatever it takes to get another".
- It takes the ability to live in the now in the present, not sometime off in the future.

All of these things can be learned if you do not possess these abilities. Like anything though, it requires practice. You can't ride a bike before you have had a few falls, so you won't be able to be a category 2 person without having some challenges in front of you.

The way I see it, if you can't help something, then it's pointless to worry over it. And if you can help it, it's also pointless to worry over it. :)

appearances can be deceiving

as a 911 operator and police/fire/EMS dispatcher for 12 years, I learned to handle other people's crises while remaining completely calm and unfazed

after dealing with thousands of real life and death emergencies, it's now hard for me to get too excited at my current job over small things - like a line forming at the register - which might make my colleagues freak out

but, I still panic inside over each personal crisis i face in my life

I've just gotten into the habit of not letting it show on the outside

Lol I did something similar too and at some point my boss called me in her office and told me that I was unusually calm for a beginner and that she was wondering if maybe it was because I don't give a f*** :/

yeah, some people thought I was immune to caring

but they appreciated that I kept everyone else calm by diffusing a tense situation with humor and ease

really, I was an emotional wreck on the inside
