Do you hate "breaks"?

Believe it or not, "breaks" are the worst part of any work, or any activity, for me.

When someone says "alright we'll have a 20 minute break now". My mind goes "no, please not a break!!!"

It's not that I don't want "rest" - sure, I won't mind that.

But to me breaks = socializing, breaks = talking about things other than work, breaks = mingling, chatting and bantering with other people, without doing anything in particular. I just find that so hard :(.

What's odd is sometimes during work, when me and my colleagues are so "focused" on a task, we "get along" pretty well. (i.e. when we are so focused that there is no room for casual chit-chat). But come a break, and when everything "loosens up", suddenly I've got nothing to say and it becomes awkward being around these people again, because we have to be consciously "socializing" - and I don't know how to do that.

Oh yeah I've never liked breaks, or that portion of class before the teacher shows up and everyone else is talking and I'm just sitting there listening like a creepy stalker-type. Basically any time when the "opportunity" is given to communicate about things non-required of where I am, you know for "fun." It's not really the breaks that are the problems though, it's the me. I mean if I was super comfortable I would love them, probably be my favorite part. I am not super comfortable though, so not so enjoyable.

Yea I always think.... how bout we just leave earlier instead :) At work I dread going to the break room. Well, a book helps.

I just sit at a packed table and listen in for the most part. Maybe nod my head or smile or laugh a little to show that I am in tune with what is happening. Actually feels better than sitting at a table on my own or with only one or two others.

Yep. And then it becomes the complete opposite of a break because anxiety is eeeeeexhausting.

Yeup. I just sit there quietly, pretending to be busy by looking through a notebook. It's just awkward for the person who sits next to me -.-

I hate breaks overall. I dont know where to go during school breaks, so I usually just stand outside my class, or goto the bathroom and obsessively wash my hands or wizz even if I dont need to. And I hate when you walk into class and your the first one there with the teacher, for what seems like 15 minutes.
Which is why I usually leave the library a little later, when class starts again after lunch.

I don't mingle with other people on breaks. I eat at my desk, I come home for lunch, or I go and eat in a park.

Yep I hate breaks too. When I have a break in work I go for a walk to avoid sitting in the staff room. Sad I know!

I haven't had a problem with this because most of my co-workers (in my department) and I chit chat during work if we're not discussing work-related topics when it's not busy. It just makes time go by so much faster. Especially if we're not having a busy day. However, if I had problems with my co-workers, I would probably just find a quiet spot for myself during breaks. I used to just sit apart from people in the breakroom and mind my business or I would go out and get lunch elsewhere. If it was a nice day, I"d sit outside and have my lunch.
The good thing about my coworkers is that they don't have a problem with either silence or talking. I'll engage them in conversation or they'll engage me. Personally, I like that my co-workers are mostly talkative.

Oh my goodness finally get to post. I have been reading so many of these post. I can truly say It sounds alot like the experiences I have. I sit in my class at the begining of class or doing breaks wishing someone would just turn around and say something to me. Sometimes I get bold enough to ask a classmate one or two questions that may lead to a short dialogue. but then it seems that I run out of topics. everyone around me seem to be laughing up a bluetreak. I feel so defeated and can't wait for class to resume.

When i was in school i used to walk around the whole building or hide in my car to avoid having to chat to people.
Which is a vicious circle because they don't get to know you, they won't ask you to go out and eat something. So you hide some more and end up a loner.

Yeah school was great ::(:

I don't want to socialise with people at work, so not sharing breaks with them doesn't bother me at all. I enjoy being away from everything to do with the office.

Breaks are annoying, suddenly finding myself isolated in a previously highly integrated group. For this reason, people think that I'm a workaholic... it's my dependency, my one escape from the mundane reality that is myself.

In the same vein as your hatred of breaks, I dislike weekends :(
