Are you/were you any good at sports

Just wondering if growing up, sports participation may have had anything to do with social phobia. I was never good at sport...in fact I completely sucked at it...particularly in team sport where competition was high.

Because of my lack of confidence, ability and also because emotions were high due to the nature of competition sport was one of those activities that I dreaded at school. I was a small kid too, so that didnt help.

I think because of this I may have missed out on some vital life skills such as working with people in a team toward a common goal, or learning to be more confident and driven toward goals. I think people who are good at sport gain a lot... and not just the obvious physical stuff.. but also things like respect, admiration, comaradere, and companionship.

Does anyone else feel like this? Are you any good at sport? do you participate..?

Tell me, I am interested to hear your stories..

Im 100% with you here m8, and yes i never was involved in sports. It probably did effect my communication skills within groups etc because i wasnt as involved as the others were, and to this day im not very good in groups at college. The only sport i was involved in wasnt a team sport so that didnt help me either (bmx).

never thought about that one, cheers for bringin it to mind :)

I have always been a keen sportsman. Mainly solo stuff though like Mountain Biking and Snowboarding. I played football and rugby at school and in the army because you had to and not through choice.

I used to be pretty good at basketball when I was in middle school. I'm not sure if I would be good at any sports now, 'cause it's been a long time since I've played any. People also thought I was good at bowling, but I don't think I was as good as they thought I was.

I used to make a lot of sport, I've tried so many different ones and never been better than average. Anyway I kept trying until I had to stop.

I was pretty partivipative and even comunicative in team sports like soccer, basketball, waterpolo or tennis (when playing doubles), but that didn't helped much to work with people in a team toward a common goal or learn to be more confident and driven toward goals. And of course it didn't help my confidence, which is still non existent.

Ive never been good at sports. Its damn hard living for sports and being so bad at them.
I just never had any confidence with sports,i ts almost like I have a fear of competition. I played hockey for 10 years and never scored a goal while my bestfriend scored 78 in his first season. I played baseball but I wasnt any good at that.

I also boxed for 7 years but I was terrible, my record was 6 wins and 28 losses. I went to the Canadian Nationals by pure luck, the guy that was supposed to go got injured. I also went to the Canada Games trials but again pure luck, there was nobody in the province in my weight class so I went by default and I got demolished. I was the laughing stock of my province.

It sucks because I just want to find a sport that im good at. Im actually amazing at table tennis though ,like seriously I played with some of the table tennis players going to the commonwealth games and they were amazed that ive never been coached before or anything. But theres no clubs where I live so I cant really go anywhere with it.

I also love rugby but I dont play. I want to play really bad and I was going to try out for my high schools team for scrumhalf (since im a peter stringer type guy) but everybody laughed at me and I just gave up.Now I watch from the sidelines. Sorry for my ranting haha:)

Up until I hit puberty, I played alot of soccer and I won alot of track and field awards for sprinting, standing long jump, running long jump and high jump.
I have 3 trophies for placing first in every event 3 years in a row. haha

After puberty was a different story.
I have absolutely no co-ordination now. I'm too clumsy and weak for most sports.
I still run now - not that fast, and I do hurt myself sometimes.
I did kickboxing in college and I plan to try Judo come autumn.

At high school I gave up on sports because of the bullying. I retreated from people all together. I tried a lot of sports, soccer and cricket, but I was always best at running. I started that again after school. My high school deprived me enjoyment of sport.

I can repeat your own words. I always sucked in sport. Although i wasn't SP...i was for sure quite unsocial...and shy. And that doesn't helps sport confidecence at all. However with age between 15-18 i was a lot of sport active, in school and at the gym. One thing is truth, u can suck at sport, u maybe aren't a super athlete, but if u feel confident enough u will confortable feel good with u being good or not on it. Sport with age is more than exercise the body but socializing, the competition disapears.

So u can make it a sport of your own taste, alone, on pair...or team sharing experience. From swiming, to tennis or soccer u have lots of choices. But the most important is to find what u really like : )

im not very good at sports and ive never been on a sports team. i especially dislike team sports, probably because it's too competitive and you have to communicate and sometimes come into physical contact with other players.

however, whether im good or bad at them, i do enjoy independant sports, such as swimming, biking, snowboarding, ice skating, roller skating, etc...

I played a bit of basketball and soccer. I wasn't bad.

No. I was terrible and hated all sports. But the idiots who ran the school decided that everyone MUST play some kind of sport at P.E.

The lack of freedom and the forced curriculum is what I disliked most. It's as if schools are designed to cater to one type of student and the rest simply have to deal with it. I had a desire to learn and lost it immediately upon entering high school.

@schools/whoeverisincharge

Yes, you're endorsing physical activity and positive overall health -- that's never a bad thing; but to demand your students to engage in sport? No, there are perfectly valid alternatives that'd provide the same result; catering individual preference, and to not explore these alternatives implies pure laziness, disregard and doing the exact opposite of what your goal should be, which is getting these kids, genuinely, into some sort of physical activity and thereon advocating better overall health. You're effectively repelling them from the idea by forcing them (at the consequence of deviance and poor markings) to do something they seriously do not want to take part in, and it's completely unreasonable on your part.

When I was younger my religion was football (soccer!)! I played in various successful teams from the age of 7 through to about 14/15, and I'm happy to say I was pretty good! I was scouted but nothing came of it, and I hated the experience, which is when I realised how much I didn't like it when it became totally serious. It was absolutely no longer fun and for me, as it become more advanced, it turned something enjoyable into something I definately wanted no part in. I think I just never saw the sense in taking something like young adults/ grown men kicking around a ball so seriously... well... that, and as I was beginning to find my political and moral feet I began to disapprove of the ridiculous player wages and ever-increasing domination of corporate involvement in sport.

Today, I have virtually no idea (nor am I interested in) what's going on in the Barclays (see what I mean?!) Premier League here in England. I have now become a hugely different person with vastly different interests, and I'm not sure I like reminiscing about my footballing days - such a different crowd of people, with whom I have little contact with now and it all gives me a weird, bleak feeling...

Unfortunately, I don't really have any sport in my life right now - although I have been getting more and more into NHL over the last year or so!... (so much for taking a stand against corporate sponsorship - everything in NHL is sponsored to death!!) :D

My father used to be a coach for a Uruguayan soccer team and we used to play soccer together everyday after dinner. After he died, I would play with some of the local kids and I got to be pretty good at it. Before I became social anxious, I tried out for my junior high's soccer team. I thought I was going to make it until the coach had a private talk with me and told me that I was good at stealing the ball and making goals, but I lacked the stamina needed to be on the team (I guess that was her nice way of telling me that I was overweight and didn't have the energy to run as required). I was pretty overweight at the time so that was understandable. Suckiest part is that when I finally lost all that weight during my junior year I was already corrupted by my social anxiety and didn't feel comfortable joining a team where competitions in front of hundreds of people would be held and stuff.

I am actually quite surprised at how many people here are active with sports...and enjoyed it. Although there are just as many who didnt like it either.. and I can understand exactly why.. being picked last for the team was always a self esteem killer..
I like staying active now as an adult, but competitive sport has never been my thing.

Not being a rugby supporter in NZ is like committing high treason.

I was never really good at any sports. I remember when I was about 8 my best friend had somehow convinced me to join a co-ed baseball team with her. Worst mistake I've ever made. I was tortured. I sucked, half the kids teased me and sneered, and they were just really rude towards me. I quit shortly after, I couldn't handle it at all. And I haven't joined a team sport since. I wanted to try out for basketball when I was in 6th grade, but because of my last incredible experience with a team sport, I couldn't do it. I was too afraid.

I don't completely suck at sports though. I do happen to be very good at hockey and pretty good at badminton. Oh, and I can hit a baseball pretty damn well for my size, even though I can't exactly play the whole sport that well.

Not that I care much for sports anyway. I love watching much more than actually participating.

I never was any good at sports. I'm not a very competitive person and I don't have the physique or interest to practice a sport. The closest thing I do is playing airsoft, but it's very casual and only with close friends.
