How do you find out what skills you're good at to find the perfect career?

Pretty much what the title says. I'm struggling a lot on how to find what skills I have that I can use to find what type of careers would be worth looking into. Anyone with SA will find it hard to think of anything because they've never been their true selves before. Or that's how I see it in my case.

just go work. any job. the more experience you get, anywhere, the more you know about what you like and don't like. then you will be more in tune with yourself and able to assess what is right for you. really, if you have no idea, the best thing is to just jump in. this book has been highly recommended:

What Color is Your Parachute?
by Richard Nelson Bolles

hope this helps!

In my case I always excelled with drawing/painting/Drafting/artwork. I thinks because it is a skill that is individualistic. Just me, working by myself, then contributing my work to the office team. I have found I really enjoy doing research and investigating trying to find answers to particular processes. Looking into historical data etc. Everyone in a work situation will be part of a Team, but you can find things to contribute to the team while doing a job that is done by yourself. Seems to be the best for me.

People can be good at about anything, as long as they practice it hard enough.

Nearly nobody can be good at something without practicing.

A few people can be outstanding at something with practicing.

Just pick something you are interested in.

I think it's important to first find your interests before honing your skills. When you have passion for something, it motivates you to become better at it. For example, I made good grades in Math, sometimes got the highest grades. Naturally, I could go into teaching math or doing accounting, but I wasn't interested. I chose IT even though at first, I suck at it, but after lots of practice, I improved.

As others have said, find out what sort of work you would find interesting - and also think about the types of people you would be most comfortable working with as well as the sort of environment would suit you to work in (indoors, outdoors, travelling, ?)

There are lots of online quizzes to try
Career Quiz - Job Outlook

Also think about skills as being things you have a natural ability or aptitude for (mechanics, art, writing...) and things you can learn (Excel, cooking, driving...)

Anything you liked or were good at as a kid? These are good things to revisit and see if you still enjoy them. Otherwise just try a variety of different things until some stick. Try all kinds of different subjects and learn as many skills as possible.

I have a math degree and ideally I'd like to get into data analysis or something along those lines. So many people have asked if I'm going to be an accountant or a teacher. They seem to think that's all it's good for. It drives me nuts. I've never had much interest in finance and I'd make a terrible teacher.

(Woohoo! Analysis didn't get bleeped!!!:applause:)

I wish I knew. I never excelled or did well at anything. I took art classes for like 5 years and I was still far below average. I can't seem to be good at anything and is why I am okay with any career that doesn't require a lot of skill. It's why I am not really in any rush to get better because I will just be working at mcdonalds anyway.
