I'm to the post game of Pokemon Sword now, and while there has been plenty to do (and still plenty more to do) throughout the game, I couldn't help but think the other day "this is good, but it's no Pokemon Silver. That post game was basically the entirety of the first generation!"

And that got me thinking, gamefreak missed a great opportunity with their first main line console iteration of the series by not making it epic. They could've gone all BOTW on it, and it would have been awesome.

I'd call it "Pokemon World Tour" and basically it's 64 gyms over 8 regions, starting in Kanto and working your way to the new one for the game (Galar we could say). And each region would be sort of locked, so you could only catch and use the Pokemon introduced in that generation (and maybe being able to go back after beating the region and using the other regions.) I think in Sword I had over 100 Pokemon in my pokedex within the first 10 hours, and could have probably played through the main story in less time than that if I wasn't site seeing, so getting each region concise enough that an 8-region game didn't take like 500 hours seems very reasonable. It'd also allow you to appreciate all the Pokemon without leaving any out, as you'd be able to ease into them.

It could also have been split up into chapters, which would space it out even more for players to explore each area in the current generation. And it could add a neat twist on the competitive scene, with matches being limited to a specific region or groups of regions. I also feel it would have both appeased long time gamers who have played every iteration as it would be full of nostalgia and easter eggs, and new (or returning) gamers who would then be able to explore all the other areas and ease into the massive library of Pokemon.

I do have very fond memories of Silver though. So part of this may be more nostalgia talking and less logic. :p

I had this literal same thought a while ago, where I wish there was a game similar to how you described, but instead you get to choose what your character looks like based on that region's style and where you start in said region. Like, say if you wanted to start in Alola, then your outfit would reflect island life and whatnot. Then you should be able to choose which city you start in in whatever region you choose, and whatever city you choose should reflect your choice of three Pokemon to choose from. So, say you choose more of a beach town or city to start in, then your three Pokemon choices should be water types or types similar to that environment. Wherever you start, you have access to that region's/generation's Pokemon, like you mentioned. And then, like you also mentioned, as each chapter progresses in each new region, you're left to have a new team each time. If they made an open world game like that, that was also well developed, I would shell out so much money for a game like that if it meant I could play through each region haha. Sadly I don't think a game like this will ever happen. Game Freak has not been very experimental with games and seems to always want to target the younger crowd even though a majority of the Pokemon fanbase is actually older.

While I've pretty much completed the post-game in Shield, I've been actively trying to complete the Pokedex and so I'm about 70 hours in with playtime (prior to post-game I completed the main story in 36 hours; I do wish the main game was longer and more challenging for older Pokemon players like myself). Now that the DLC has been out for a little bit, I've been able to get Pokemon via Surprise Trade without even having the DLC. But since finding out that the purchase is actually for both DLCs, I'll wind up getting it eventually, just because I do really want to play Crown Tundra, even though Isle of Armor didn't capture my interest much.

There's finally a release date. Didn't think it would ever happen honestly, or at least I figured it was going to get pushed to be an exclusive or featured game on the next gen consoles. (I think that latter is still the case, given that the new gen is set to release this holiday season.) Glad it's still going to be released on Xbox One. I'm intrigued and I'd like to give it a go. :)

I want to say "great minds think alike!" but as I was thinking about it, and especially as I was typing it out I had this gnawing feeling I had heard the idea from someone else before, and if there is a post somewhere on here where you talked about it I definitely stole the idea from you, archived it my mind, and then forgot where it came from :p It does seem unlikely to happen, but we can always hope!

I'm working on completing the pokedex now too, it's cool with the online trade feature that it's actually doable without, er, friends to trade with :p Due to Celebi and Mew being a special event pokemon in the second generation, I'm not sure I've ever completed a pokedex before, so doing it here would be another cool accomplishment in gaming for me :D

Go ahead and be honest and inflate your ego a bit. ;) Great minds DO think alike. :) I had posted this idea forever ago on my Tumblr back when I was active on there, but I don't know very many people from here that actively stalked my page there. If you did and that's where you must have gotten the idea from, then great! I'm sure other fans have had the same thoughts though and have posted similarly across the web on some random Poke forums or something.

Yes, I have never completed a Pokedex before either, so this is equally exciting. The online trading via game and Pokemon Home, plus being able to catch trade evolutions in the Wild Area makes the process soooo much easier!
