As for the Post Your Picture Thread, maybe there should be a forum rule that no one is allowed to comment on how people look, the thread is simply there to let curious members know what you look like and you can keep your judgements in your own head.

...yeah, right.

If that were to occur I'm not sure it would help. People may then start to question why a user has more page views, comments, or friends and may relate it back to photos that were posted in the thread. Just a theory.

I think bigger personalities get more comments, more established members get more comments. Kia your pictures get about 5 pages of comments, why do you think that is?

I agree with this. It's like Facebook, one popular girl will post some dull picture of herself doing a duck face and get 50 likes yet another girl who's equally attractive but not popular will only get a few.

I remember a time, may months ago, when a pic of mine was completely missed. Back then it was a big deal but now I wouldn't mind.

There is something that still bothers me about it, and it's when people tell me to smile (yes, I'm talking to you, Jewel :bat: ). I simply hate faking smiles, and I very rarely feel like smiling, so what can I do.

So if you post a picture, it's not to 'get' comments, unless that's what your purpose is.. it's just to let everyone know what you look like.. If I post my picture I don't expect any comments, just letting everyone know i'm actually a real person.

Seriously, it's just a thread that's a bit of fun, you either post a picture or you don't.

Personally I just like to see what the people I'm communicating with look like; and I think its brave when people post a picture.

I have to say though: to suggest that people who don't receive as many comments are not as attractive is a bit careless to post on an anxiety website. I certainly hope nobody who has taken the step to post a photo of themselves as a mark of exposure therapy is thinking back to how many replies they received and reading too much into it, especially if they only got a couple of responses.

Attractiveness is in the eye of the beholder.

Exactly.

I think bigger personalities get more comments, more established members get more comments.

You've hit the nail on the head; again.

The more posts you've read by somebody -> the more intrigued you are to know what they look like -> the more likely you are to comment if they post a picture.

By general rule I rarely comment on the picture thread, but I know that in the past I've seen some very good-looking people (in my opinion) post photos, but I've felt even less compelled to comment on them simply because I don't 'know' them well enough because they've only made a dozen or so posts. It's not to say they're not attractive.

^ That's a really good idea! It satisfies the curiosity without making anyone feel bad.

how does someone commenting on someone else's photo hurt you?
Well, when I read some of the comments where guys are oogling and drooling over the very attractive gals' pics, it makes me feel inferior and not want to ever post my pic! Yes, maybe that's my issue but there may be others who are deterred for the same reason. Keep in mind that for some of us, our SA is caused by how we feel about our appearance.

Oh. I never thought of it like that. Well, BlackSheep, it looks like you and I will not be posting out pics any time soon (high five). I still enjoy seeing how everyone looks like. But, I think that's more the curious side of me.

That is why the young and attractive post their pics to soak up the praise, and the older and less attractive like myself don't.

^I agree with twiggle. Plus I don't think anyone needs to be SUPER attractive to post their pictures. Like I know for a fact that I don't look what you'd call stunning, I'm just average but then again so are most people in the world. Does that mean that I can't post my picture if I want to? And most of the pictures I've seen here are attractive.
Also agree with Jewel, most established members do get more comments because the more people post, the more they're known by others and its only natural that people will make a conscious effort to comment.
I understand, how someone may feel bad when their pictures get missed though.

hehe well in my defence I wasn't "telling" you to fake smile but more I was after the real yet elusive smile of Arthur Dent which I know exists because I have seen it on video !!!! (PLease note people that you can't look directly at Dent when he smiles, you'll be blinded, FACT, you can peep through your hands though :eek:mg: )

Having said that, your point is taken and I won't say anything more about your lovely smile ;)

People don't post those pictures to gain acceptance of any kind. There's more then a few regular members that are perfectly accepted that have never even as much as hinted what they look like.

Why can't we have a thread such as that on this forum without it being scrutinized as some of resonating beacon of narcissism? It's harmless fun, good for exposure and should be treated as such.

I think this is true in the great majority of cases. Even in cases where someone gets a ton of responses I've rarely seen any evidence of fishing for compliments.

I have seen cases where someone posts a picture of themselves as their first post, or within their first few--and invariably it's a very attractive person. Right away, I distrust them. Makes me think how they look is the best thing about them. That could still be wrong but it seems like a cheap way of getting people to like you.

Yeah, no. I've been here years now and I've seen only a very few instances of narcissism. I don't think any of them are still posting here, either.

Yes. Being insecure makes it hard to avoid doing things like counting how many responses you get, or feeling bad if you get none.

And I have facepalmed more than once when an especially pretty girl posts her picture, knowing it was about to get quoted over and over with polite translations of 'OMG I WANNA DO YOU SIDEWAYS'. Testosterone--what can you do? :idontknow:

I try to avoid such frenzies myself specifically because I don't think that's helpful in a place like this.

On the whole though I really think the good points outweigh the bad in having a picture thread.

once i've commented on one picture, i feel bad if i don't comment on every other picture, but at the same time i feel silly for adding a comment onto the fifteen other comments that someone else has already received, but if i see a picture posted that no one else has commented on, i will post a comment to make sure the post isn't neglected, but once i've commented on one picture, i feel bad if i Same. It's precisely the reason why I barely post in that thread.

and probably the reason why a lot of people don't post comments, in general

being able to post a simple comment without thinking too much about the endless ramifications is one step toward overcoming anxiety

then posting personal information about yourself without thinking too much about the endless ramifications

then expressing your opinions without thinking too much about the endless ramifications

further down the road is posting a picture of yourself without thinking too much about the endless ramifications

this whole forum can be a useful tool for exposing yourself and getting past the overthinking that hinders our social functioning

that's the whole reason i come here

(well, that, and to meet girls and look at their pictures)
