If they're rude is it possible to change practices?

I hate the dentist too and am putting off my annual check-up, but if you do have something wrong and it isn't seen to soon it could develop into something reallyyyyyy painful. Perhaps its best just to grin and bear it, no pun intended. The longer you put it off, the more you'll worry about it.

I haven't been to the dentist for more than ten years (since I've had dental insurance) because I'm so worried about the cost and also that he or she will find something dire.

But I've got an appointment on Tuesday. I hope I have the courage to go.

I think you should verbally abuse him or them if they get mouthy.

Can you ask around to see if other people recommend a really good dentist? (Maybe any friends or relatives or acquaintances who work with people know about someone good & gentle? People who work in public places may know these things, eg in pubs or stores or cafes or such... When someone said she liked a dentist even though she prefers to give birth than going to dentist, I knew he could potentially be good haha!!)

I've found the last one this way, he was really great, and I didn't have (that much) fear to go to him... Really patient and kind... Also he had a great waiting room with many international magazines... and I promised myself something nice after a check-up/appointment (eg to go to the store & browse around, get a magazine... small rewards, you know?)
Unfortunately he now only takes people who pay privately (no longer via healthcare yikes) so no idea who to go to now yikes...
My new ideal is to find someone who knows how to properly handle any old amalgam fillings or such (this guy didn't although he was great otherwise)

You could also ask around on forums with people from your area? There are some lists online too, for more natural-minded dentists or such... (though it's still good to double-check 'em..)

You could also talk to them, get to know them first - I learnt to tell everyone I might faint, and not to take it personally, and usually they were extra nice after that :)

Yeah im scared to go too. I just went a couple days ago to get a filling (which was painful) and ive been having pretty bad pain in my jaw for weeks now,im certain my wisdom teeth need to come out. But of course when the time came when she asked " have you been having any pain at all or any discomfort anywhere?" I just shook my head.

Not all dentists are mean! Perhaps you should start looking for a new one if the one you have now is being rude. And with the fear aspect we can never really conquer it unless we face it. Avoiding it won't make the problem go away. I'm sort of scared of doctors but I know if I avoid them my whole life then issues will only persist and won't get better.

Invisibleman, if wisdom teeth might be coming out, do get a dentist's opinion - how big is your jaw? It would be REALLY good to talk to a dentist/orthodontist, maybe have an an Xray or similar of the jaw... Some people need to have wisdom teeth extracted (me & sis did too... it's not a biggie, everyone was really nice, it's better if you don't do all sides at once so you can eat on the other side - and it's WAY better than trying to get too many teeth where there isn't place for them!!)

Has anyone found any 'Dental phobia certified' dentists near by and what was that like? :)
I'd totally love to go to one lol!!
There's a dentist with a 'dream office' described on the dental fear forums - but he moved to New Zealand?? (There seem to be some in UK, USA & Dubai-??)

I do think having the radio on, with good music, can help A LOT!! (the previous dentist did that)

I think I also did some EFT, TAT and CBT/journalling and such before I actually went to that dentist (plus had a relative go with me lol) so, take all the 'crutches' you can to get you there!! :)

I think we can all have 'mini steps' - I'll try to google up some info about some of our local dentists, and if there are any 'specialized' to treat both more naturally and for people with 'phobia' lol!

Somehow this reminds me of the mean school dentist when I was back in primary school. I always dreaded those visits.

If your current dentist makes you feel that way, find a new one. I'm sure you could find nice ones.

I had the same problem when mine grew in. Got to the point that for two weeks I could open my mouth big enough to fit a spoon between my teeth. Went to the emergency room because of it and they said "this isn't an emergency"....

Get those suckers out because it's just going to get worse and worse until you're in a lot more pain than you need to be. Once they were out, jaw pain was gone instantly.

The healthcare system is like that. Some professionals can be a bit condescending and rude to their patients even over little things. I wouldn't be surprised if those ones are just taking their stresses out on their patients (after all, it's a very competitive and stressful field).

But you are right, them being rude isn't going to make you feel better about your teeth, so I would suggest finding a different dentist. Perhaps you could look up dentists in your area and find ratings of them online? That's what I usually do when looking for a specialized doctor, because the last thing you want is some person who doesn't know what they're doing. Once you find one who is good at what they do and makes you feel better about yourself upon leaving their office, then you've found your match.

Hope this helps. :)
