Yes I think some people are very complicated. Not all. It annoys me a great deal when people aren't honest and open about matters which concern others.

Yes they are, but in general I think they all follow one rule they're drawn towards the more happier and energetic ones.

Most people constantly change as they grow, mature and learn new things throughout their life.
There are also so many different combinations of personality traits it's unbelievable, and even then they are altered due to a person's family and environment.
So yes, I think it would be extremely difficult to truly understand people who are constantly changing and evolving.

You can know someone for a lifetime and still not know everything about them. Yet you can meet someone else and know all you need to know in a few moments.

A safety mechanism? I'm not so sure I go along with that, most of these processes are autonomous and we tend to get confused when trying to break them down. The essence of being able to understand each other is there, it's up to the individual.

I think we are talking about two different types of complexity, I was stuck in a traffic jam the other day and thought "all these people around me don't want to be here" after a while that thought turned into "all these people have their own little lives that make up them".

Think about how important your life is and how complex it is (even the simplest people have a complex being) times that by 6.5 billion and you have a whole lot of collaborative complexity. due to the complexity of existence.

Well said. Sorry it took me almost three years to notice it.

Yep. Nobody shares completely everything about themselves. Even to people they've known their whole life

Almost everyone I have met are complicate to understand. I rarely ever do understand people, especially ones that like to cause a lot of devastation in the world. Animals on the other hand, I don't mind them at all.

Some people are, but most people aren't.

It's more like they don't make sense, need to protect their egos or refuse to admit their mistakes. It's easy to understand why they don't want to admit they're wrong, but it's not always so easy to get them to understand it.

So they can be moody and irrational, and this can make them unpredictable... but there's nothing really complex about being unpredictable.

I think you need a lot of intelligence to be truly complex... and I've met very very very few people with a lot of intelligence.

^Do you live near a nuclear power plant by any chance?

Human nature is complex.
You can live with someone for years and still be surprised by something they do.
I think everyone has at least a tiny bit of themselves they never let another human being anywhere near voluntarily.

Old thread, but that doesn't make it worth answering, I suppose.

I think the answer is yes and no. And I think it's all a matter of opinion. So in my own opinion, yes. And no.

Yes, because the human mind is woven together by so many different threads of emotion and memory and impulse and there's the old "reptilian" brain competing with the newer, "higher" brain - the uniquely human part of the brain. All of these things create a sometimes confusing, often messy web or tapestry of intention/impulse/action/feeling, etc...

But then, humans can also be seen as primarily impulse-driven, not much different than other animals except that we are self-aware. We are still selfish in the same way all other animals are in that all-important need to preserve our own existence. We do the same things again and again, we write the same stories (literally and figuratively). We are like intelligent machines.

So... yes and no. I don't really know how you could go about answering only "yes" or "no" in a satisfying way.

You can never understand your own self completely, and that's with constant telepathic access to your thoughts and 24/7 exposure. Considering that, you can't hope to understand anyone else completely. You can understand the patterns of some simple very predicable people maybe.

That reminds me of a quote from the book I just finished, about how, even after being married to someone a long time, you can never truly completely understand your spouse; it said something about how one mind can't ever hope to fully know another. I wonder if that's true.
